SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 290,371, dated December 18, 1883,

To all whom, it may concern:

Be it known that I, CALVIN G. UDELL, of

the town of North Indianapolis, county of Marion, aud State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Show- Stands, of which the following is a specification.

The object of my said invention is to produce a light, strong, and inexpensive stand upon which dealers may conveniently display brooms and such like articles. This object is accomplished by forming a combined wood and iron structure, as will be hereinafter more particularly described.

Referring t'o the accompanying drawings, which are made a part thereof, and on which similar letters of reference indicate similar parts', Figure 1 is a perspective view of a stand embodying my said invention; Fig. 2, a central vertical section of the same; Fig. 3, a view similar to a portion of Fig. 2, on an enlarged scale; Fig. 4, ahorizontal sectional view, looking downwardly from the dotted line z z in Fig. 3, and Fig 5, a vertical sectional view, looking outwardly from the dotted line m x in Fig. 4.

.In said drawings, the portions marked A represent the base of the stand; B C, the standard; D, the upper ring upon which articles are to be hung for the purposes of display, and E the main ring for that purpose.

The base A is a circular .wooden base of ordinary construction,having a cross-bar,upon which the standard portion B is mounted. It has holes c bored partially through it, in which the ends of the handles of the articles placed in the stand may rest, as shown by the dotted lines in Fig. l. The standis preferably mounted on casters, which are attached to the under side of this base.

The standard is composed of the two parts B C. The lower part, B, is mounted upon the cross-bar of the base, andl is further secured to said base by braces b. is mounted the hub E2 of the main ring E. The upper portion, C, ismounted in the hub E2, which serves tosupport it and connect it to the lower portion, B.

The ring E is preferably composed of three sections, which meet and lap at the points where the arms E are joined thereto, and are secured together by thesame rivets, e, by which they are connected to said arms. The arms E are suitably fitted to the hub E2, preferably entering openings therein, and are secured thereto by rivets e', these arms, as well as the other metal portions of this device, being usually of malleable iron. are preferably cast integrally with said arms, thus avoiding the expense of separate rivets. The hub El is cast in suitable form to receive the standard portion B from below and the standard portion vC from above, the hole therein being preferably larger in one portion than the other, as shown most plainly in Fig. 3. It has short arms el extending therefrom, to which the Varms E are secured. The braces E3 enter slots formed to receive them in the ring E, and are secured by ordinary screws or nails to the standard portion B. The upper ends of these braces are widened and notched, (see specially Fig. 5,) and are secured to the The rivets e and e ring by being first inserted in the slots and then turned one-fourth round, so that the notches will engage on the sides of the portions in which the slots are formed, and thus interlock therewith. Having thus fully described my said invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. In a sl1o\v-stand, the combination of the base, the standard, the sectional ring E, the

Y arms E', yand the hub E2, said ring and said hub being connected by said arms and secured thereto by rivets, substantially as described, and for the purposes specified.

2. Inadisplaystand, the combination ofthe base, the standard, the ring E, having arms E and a hub, E2, and the braces E, said braces being constructed, as shown, to interlock with said ring, and thus be secured thereto, substantially as set forth.
