UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
RICHARD FRED. PREUSSER, OF LAMBERTVILLE, NEW JERSEY.
SAD-IRON..
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 289,709, dated December 4, 1883.
Application tiled June 5, 1883. (Model.)A
had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain improvements in sad-irons or smoothing-irons; and it has for its objects to provide an iron of such construction as to receive a handle attachment,
which can be so afixed as to permit a current of cold air to pass between it and the iron when in place, and thus prevent the heating of the handle, and by means of which any number of irons may be employed-one at a timev-with but one handle attachment.
The above-mentioned objects I attain by the means illustrated in the accompanying draw ings, in which- Figure 1 represents an isometrical view of my improved iron; and Fig. 2, a longitudinal vertical sectional view thereof.
The letter A indicates theiron, which is of the usual form, with the exception of the handle. The said iron at its top is provided with raised projections B, which form seats for the plate C, which is secured by means of screws D pressing into threaded apertures in said projections. The upper surface of the plate O is I provided with two parallel longitudinal ribs,
D', between which is adapted to set a detachable plate, E, which has recesses F at each side, which t over the ribs. The said plate C is provided with a slot, G, near'its center, through which is adapted to pass the hookedV end of a lever, H, which is fulcrumed in bearings K on the plate E, the hooked portion of said lever extending through a slot in said plate. button, L, by which` it may be operated, and
The lever is provided with a knob or .K
is held in and returned to a normal position y,
tached from the handle by means of the hooked lever. The space between the iron and the plate secured to the same, by leaving a body of air between the two, will prevent inconven ience to the hand from transmitted or radiated heat.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
The combination, in a sad-iron, A, having projections B on f top, of the plate C, secured thereto by means ofthe screws D, and provided with ri bs D', the detachable plate E, and hooked lever H, and its spring M and button L, and the handle I), all constructed and adapted to operate substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof IafdX my signature in presence of twowitnesses. RICHARD FRED. PREUSSER.
