Description
UNITED STATES PATENT ()FFICE.
JOHN HAMMERSLY MOKEOWN, OF- SALEM, onro.
SHAKING GRATE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 289,680, dated December 4, 1883.
Application filed March 5,}883. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern: Be it known that I, JoHN H. MoKEowN, citizen of the United States, residing at Salem, in' the county of Columbiana and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Shaking Grate, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to shaking grates for all kinds of stoves; and it consists in certain improvements in the construction of the same, which will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings hereto annexed,.Figure 1 is a longitudinal vertical sectional :view of a grate equipped with my improvements. Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse sectional View of the same. Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view, and Fig. 4 is a detail view of one of the gratebars detached.
The same letters refer to the same parts in all the figures.
A in the drawings represents the frame of my improved grate, which is provided at its ends with inwardly-projecting brackets B B. Said brackets are provided with perforations G O, to receive studs or pins D D, projecting downwardly from the cross-bars E E, mounted upon the said brackets, upon which they are pivoted by means of the pins 1), as shown.
F and G are the grate-bars. These are constructed, as shown, with webs H, connecting the transverse lugs I, the upper sides of which are flat, while their under sides are beveled, as shown, thus insuring great strength, while the ashes and clinkers are permitted to pass freely. The grate-bars are provided at their ends with downwardly-projecting studs J, by which they are connected pivotally to the pivoted cross-bars E E, which are provided near their ends with perforations K, to receive the said studs J. r
In the drawings hereto annexed only two grate-bars are shown; but I would have it understood that any. desired number may be used without departing from the spirit of my invention. One of the grate-bars, G, is provided at one end with a shank, L, extending through the side of the stove, and adapted to receive a shaker-iron,- by means of which a reciprocating motion may be imparted.
'The operation of my invention will be at once understood from the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings hereto annexed. When operated, the gratebars will be reciprocated alternately in opposite directions, thus causing the ashes and clinkers to pass through and down into the ash-pit below. Owing to the peculiar construction, any accumulation of ashes at the back wall is prevented, and the draft is therefore at all times free and unimpaired.
I am aware of the patent to Brown, March 25, 1862, No. 34, 731. In this case, however, the perforated brackets B are not found, and the parts which take the place of the levers E in this case are pivoted upon studs extending downward from the ends of the frame, making it necessary to employ keys or pins for ho1ding them in place, which is obviously objectionable. Again, the grate is arranged to be shaken by a forked lever applied to one of the end levers, while by my invention one of the grate bars has a shaking bar extending through the front of the stove.
I disclaim the matter shown in the patent to Brown, above referred to; but
I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States' The combination of the frame A, having inwardly-proj ecting brackets B B, provided with perforations G, the cross-bars E E, having per- JOHN HAMMERSLY MGKEOWN.
mark. 'Witnesses:
M. L. EDWARDS, PETER AMBLER.
