CAR-COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 289,228, dated November 27, 1883.
Application filed June 26, 1883. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN COOHRAN, J r., of Millwood, in the county of Lincoln and State of Missouri, have invented a new and Improved Car-Coupling, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention consists of devices by which the car can be coupled and uncoupled from the top or sides of the can to avoid danger to the attendant, the said devices consisting of a rock-shaft crossing the end of the car from side to side, from which shaft the couplingpin is suspended by an arm, and a link-lifter is also suspended from it, so that by cranks at the sides of the car, or a rod and chain extend ing from the pin-supporting arm tothe top of the car, the pin and link canbe handled without going between the cars, all as hereinafter fully described.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure l is a perspective view of the end of a freight-car with my improved coupling devices attached. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of part of the car-body and section of the drawhead and shaft; and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of my improved coupling devices.
I arrange the shaft a across the end of the car, in suitable bearings, b, to allow itto turn, and provide said. shaft with a crank, c, at each end, for turning it, also with an arm, d, at the center, and also with a couple of arms, (2, near the center, one on each side of it. From the end of arm d, I suspend the couplingpin f, and from the arms e, I-suspend the link-lifter g. From-arm d, I extend a chain, h, and rod 1' to the top of the car, where the rod is fitted in the eye-stud j. tobe retained in position, and so that the chain may be pulled up at any time to raise the coupling-pin. To prevent the coupling-pin f from being pulled out of the hole in the upper part of the draw-bar k, I have arranged a stop-bracket, Z, on the front end of the car, suitably for the arm 01 to strike against when the pin has been raised tothe the holding-pin being inserted in a hole in the side of the car-body.
It will be seen that with this improved device the attendant will not be exposed to the danger of going between the cars, and yet will be enabled to perform his duties equally as well. Any kind of draw-head that can be coupled by hand may be coupled with this improved coupler.
1 do not abandon nor dedicate to the public .any patentable feature set forth herein and not hereinafter claimed, but reserve the right to claim the same, either in a reissue of any patent that may be granted upon this application or in other applications for Letters Patcut that I may make.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. In a car-coupling, the combination, with the rock-shaft at, having end cranks, c, and provided with the arm d, carrying the coupling-pin f, and arms e, of the link-lifter g, pivoted to the lower ends of the arms 6, substantially as shown and described.
2. In a car-coupling, the combination of the cranked rock-shaft a, provided with the arm d, carrying the coupling-pin f, stop Z, chain h, secured to the outer end of the arm d at one end, and at its opposite end tov the rod 2', passing through the eyebolt j at the top of the car, arms 6, secured to the rock-shafta, and linklifter g, pivoted to the lower ends of the arms e, substantially as shown and described.
