A. H. JOHNSTON.
LOAD BINDER. No. 289,109. v .Patented Nov. 27, 1883.
fifa/S." A @Ven-rw df. Va/@d y .zemwgrn/sznl UNITED STATES PATENT' EEICE.
ALEXANDER H. JOHNSTON,V ,OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN.
LOAD-BINDER.
SPECIFI(`JA'I}')1\1' forming part of Letters Patent No. 289,109, dated November 27, 1883.
Application led ,Inns 16, 1883. (No model.)
To all whom, it naay concern:
Beit known that I, ALEXANDER H. J OHN- s'roiv, of Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented new and use'ul Improvements in Devices for Securing Binding-Chains; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact de scription thereof, reference being Vhad to the accompanying drawings, which `forni a part of this specification. y
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in the construction of devices for securing binding-chains; and the invention consists in the peculiar construction of a binding-lever and locking devices, and in the peculiar construction, arrangement, and combinations of the various parts, all as more fully hereinafter set forth.
Figure l is a side elevation, showing the ap` plieation of my device to a load. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of my improved device detached. l
While there are many places in which my device can be advantageously employed, for the purpose of illustrating its application and use I have shown the device as employed in securing aload of logs'upon bobs, such as are usually used in lumbering.
In the accompanying drawings, A represents a lever, which is provided with an elliptic loop, B, the corresponding end of the lever being slotted and formed into a locking eye or iron, C. Loosely secured upon the elliptic loop B, so that it may readily slide thereon, is a grab-link, D.
E represents ashort chain, one end of which is secured to one of the sway-bars of the sleigh, i
lever is held in a vertical position, or nearly so,wi th the handle down. The free end of the `chain F, being brought over the top of the load, is passed down through the slotted end of the lever, as much slack of said chain being taken up by hand as is possible, it being held in such position until the handle of the lever is radially raised, causing the slotted head C to engage with one ofthe links of the chain F. By then pushing the lever into a ver tical position, with the vhandle up, the grab- ,link D is compelled to slide along the elliptic loop to its now highest point, and by these movements of the parts firmly binding the load Aupon the bobs, securely locking it in place.
I am aware of the Patent No. 276,295, and make no claim to anything shown therein.
W hat I claim as my invention is- 1. In a device for securing binding-chains, the combination of a lever, A, provided with a locking slot or eye, O, and an elliptic loop, B, with a binding-chain, F, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, with the chains E and F, the lever A. provided with the locking-eye C, elliptic loop B, and grab-link D, substantially as described.
