ROAD-SCRAPER.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 289,012, dated November 27, 1883.

To @ZZ whom it may concern.:
Be it known that I, GEORGE D. Mirrcnniu, of Pittsfield, in the county of Lorain and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Road-Scrapers; and I do hereby declare the following to be afull, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same.
Myinvention relates to roadscrapers; and it consists in the peculiar construction of the same, as will be hereinafter fully set forth and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of a machine embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same, looking down from above. view of the under side of my device. Fig. 4 is a view in front elevation of my device. Fig. 5 is adetached sectional view of one of the scraper-uprights and its hearing.`
A is a frame, which is supported in the rear by means of two wheels, B B', one of said wheels being located directly in the rear of the scraper. The forward end of the frame A is supported by means of a caster-truck, C, to which said frame is 4pivot-ally attached.
D is a scraper,which runs diagonally across the frame A. This scraper D is secured to the frame A by means of adjustable supports, which may consist of the pivoted levers D `D, one end of which is secured to the up rights D2 D2, extending from both ends of the scraper D. This arrangement allows of either end of said scraper being raised independently of the other end; or both ends may be raised, if desired. The bearings through which the uprights D2 D2 slide may be provided with friction-rollers a. a. (See Figs. 2 and 5.)
E is an adjustable plow, which occupies a position in advance of the front end of the scraper D. This plow E is secured to an upright, E, which in turn is secured to one end of a pivoted lever, E2, but any means of attachment may be used to secure the plow E to the frame A which will allow of said plow being raised or lowered at the will of the operator. The function of this plow E is to scrape or form the gutters at the sides of streets, and also to loosen or plow the earth in advance of the scraper D.
F is an adjustable end board or piece,which is adapted to fit against the rear end of the Fig. 3 is a plan' soraperD and prevent the escape of the yearth as it is collected by the said scraper when it is desired to carry the earth along for a distance to ll in hollow places in the road. The end board or piece, F, is connected to the frame A by the supports F Ff, which are adjustably secured to the frame A. This allows of the `end board or piece, F, being raised or lowered when desired. Any suitable adjusting device may be used that will operate to adjust the end board or piece, F, as described.
G is aharrow, which is adapted to be raised and lowered by a lever, G, secured to one of the uprights Gr'l G2. This harrow is located at the forward end of the machine, and acts to break the lumps and loosen the earth in advance of the scraper. v
My manner of securing the teeth to the bar of the barrow is partly shown in Fig. 4; but I do not desire to claim it in this application, but reserve the right to do so in a subsequent patent for which I will apply in the near future.
H is a guide-wheel or wheel-colter,which is placed in the rear of the scraper D, and adj ustably secured to the frame A by means of the upright H and lever H2. The function of this -wheel H is to enter the earth and prevent any lateral movement or sliding to one side of the machine while it is in operation.
Vhat I claim is- 1. In a road-scraper, the combination, with ascraper arranged diagonally to theframe and devices for raising and lowering the scraper, of a plow secured to a vertically-adjustable standard, and located in front of the forward end of the scraper, and arrangedto be independent thereof both in structure and adjustnoent, substantially as set forth.
2. In a road-scraper, the combination, with the diagonal scraper and the two large supportingwheels located in rear of the scraper, of a vertically adjustable rolling colter arranged in rear of the scraper and between the supporting-wheels, and adapted to prevent the lateral movement of the machine, substantially as set forth.
