Description
I NTTED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH CHARLES HOVELLS, OF MADISON, VISCONSIN.
NOZZLE FOR FIRE-ENGINES.
Specification Vof Letters Patent No. 28,865, dated June 26, 1860.
To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that- I, JOSEPH CHARLES HowELLs, of Madison, Dane county, and State of lVisconsin, have invented a new and Improved lVIethod of Operating Adjustable Nozzles for Fire-Engine Hose-Pipes, &c.; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, figures, and letters of reference thereon, making part of this specification.
Of the said drawings Figure l is a front elevation; Fig. 2, is a longitudinal section and Fig. 3, is a transverse section of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts in all the drawings.
The nature and object of my invention is to render a nozzle instantly adjustable and thus enable the person having control of the pipe to discharge such a sized stream of water as may be desirable under the circum stances.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention I will describe its construction and operation.
A represents a pipe of the desired material having a screw F cut therein to connect with the hose.
B B, are the adjustable mouth pieces which are made of composition brass or other noncorrosive material and secured toable mouth pieces B B, and which serve to adjust the size of the opening as plainly shown in all the iigures. The adjustable pieces B B are secured at (a a) by means of a small collar as seen in Fig. 2.
F is a cap or shield with a milled or roughened edge concentrically countersunk on the underside and corresponding to the concentric grooves E E so as to admit of the movement of the collar C as seen by the dotted lines in Fig. l, and attached to the collar C by the screws Z d.
The operation will be as follows: The pipe or nozzle being secured to the hose and the adjustable pieces B B set to describe a circle which is done by rotating the collar C in the direction of the arr'ow and the person holding the pipe desiring to make a larger or wider opening has only to turn the collar in a reverse direction and the opening in the nozzle is instantly adjusted to the capacity desired.
To remove the adjustable pieces B B it is only necessary to take out the pins or screw heads (c c) as will be readily perceived by any one skilled in such arts.
Having thus described my improved adjustable nozzle I will state what I desire to secure by Letters Patent.
I do not claim the adjustable mouth pieces B B nor the pipe A as they are already well known and have been and are now used for a variety of purposes; but
I claim- The arrangement and combination of the rotary collar C, cap F, the ears b the pins or screw heads c c, with the adjustable mouth pieces B B, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth and described.
JOSEPH CHARLES HoWELLs. [L s.]
