SPECIFICATION fer'ming "pere ef Letters Patent No. 288,590, aerea November 1a, ieee.
Application ined oeteber'eaieea Menem To @ZZ whom it may concern,.-
Be it known that I, DAvID R. NICHOLS, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Brockville, in the county of Leeds and Province of Ontario, Canada, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Carpet-Sweepers; and I do hereby ldeclare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and iigures of reference marked thereon.
Figure l of the drawings is a bottom view of my sweeper. Fig. 2 is a top or plan view of the same. Figs. 3 and 4 are cross-sectional views, and Figs. 5 and 6 are detail views.
This invention has relation to carpetesweepers; and it consists in the construction and` novel arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim appended.
In the accompanying drawings, the letter' AQ designates the arched top of the case, consisting of the curved sheet-metal-pieces B, the grooved edge strips, G, and the grooved top piece, D, into which the edges of thepieces B arelet, and the end castings, E, which are secured to the ends of the edge strips and top strips. The castings at the end of this case give it strength and the proper weight to keep' the machine downto its work. @ne of the end castings is formed with a center bearing, a, opening from the bottom, and designed to receive the movable j ournal-seat b, which supports the journal at the head of the brushshaft F. Near this end casting is arranged a partition, G, which is fastened to the parts D and G of thecase, and serves to separate the dust-chamber from the compartment in which the wheels work. The partition G is made with a-central notch opening from its bottom,
andV designed to provide for the passage of theV brush-shaft, the main portion of which lies in the dust-chamber, while its head and collar bearing, c, are Ain the wheel-compartment.
H H represent the wheels, which are provided with rubbertires, and have central hubs, which are seated on spindles d, which project from platearms e, which are pivoted to theV partition G, the pivots passing through horizontal slo't-s g in said plates, which are provided to allow a movement of the platearms, spindles, and wheels toward the collar on the brush-shaft, which is engaged by the Atires of said wheels and operated thereby ywhen the machine is in motion over a carpet.
Ivhe journal at thetail end of the brush-i shaft moves in a bearing, b', on the end of a spring-arm, I, which is fastened at its other end and secured to the end of the case. This flexible bearing allows the brush to move easily over inequalities of the carpet and adapt itself to the surface presented.
@he bottom K of the case consists of end arms, L L', which are hinged to one edge of the case, and are connected longitudinally by the dirt-trays N N, between which is the 'lon1 gitudinal opening through which the brush operates. Each dirt-tray consists of a sheetmetal plate having its edges turned upward to form an outer wall, k, and an inner wall, 7c', the `latter being inclined over the tray, in or der to `hold the dust and dbris mor-e securely, as indicated in the drawings. The edge of the bottom is provided with a spring-catch, Z. The arm L', which is at the end of the case opposite that having the operating-wheels, is provided with a rounded shoe or runner-base, m, on which this end of the case moves.
The top of the case is provided with ears, V, each of which is formed with abearing-recess, o, for the journal z ofthe bail Z, to which the handle of the machine is secured. rI lhe bearing-recess of one of the ears is made in enlarged form, or elliptical, and is provided with a notch, n, in its bottom, to receive a stop projection, s, on the t j ournal of the corresponding end of the bail. Vhen thehandle is in the upright position, the stop will automatically engage the notch n and hold the handle vertical. In order to disengage the handle, it is only necessary to give it a slight lateral movement, which will raise the stop out of thenotch and allow the journal to turn in its IOO ' the handle may be set upright or secured in the bail Z, to which the handle of the machine is secured, one of said bearings being,` made 15 in enlarged form, and provided with a notch, n, to receive a stop projection, s, on the journal of the corresponding end of the bail, substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my naine in the presence of two Witnesses.
