SKlDDlNG-MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming PATENT Ormeas part of Letters Patent No. 288,3CG, dated November 13, 1883.
Application filed June 18, 1883. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom, t muy concern.-
Beit known that I, Hennen Burman, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ladington, in the county of Mason and State ofMiehigan, have invented certain new and useful lin- ,provei'nents in Skidding-lllachines, of which the following is a specifica-tion, to wit:
rlhis invention relates to an improveinentin machines for skidding logs; and it consists in the combination, willi a truck carrying a inast, engine, and suitable. drunis provided with clutches, of a series of guy-ropes, a traveling sheave-earrlage, and a drag-rope having de* vices for attachment to the logs, substantially as will be hereinafter inore fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to avail themselves ol' its beneiits, l will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of my invention; Fig. 2, a plan view of the saine, and Fig. 3 a cross-section of the device for operating the traveling sheave-fraine.
A represents a truck or platform, which is 'preferably supported uopn wheels, to facilitate moving f ro in place to place. rlhis truck is provided with a steam-boiler, B, and one or more steam-cylinders, l5', the pistons of which are connected to crank-pins b upon the ends 'of a shaft, b', journaled in raised portions of the main frame, and provided with a suitable spur-pinion, if', as shown. The spunpinion meshes with a spur-wheel, c, fast upon a shaft, c', journaled in the frame, and carrying a loose winding-drum, G, as represented in Fie. 2 rlliepinion b2 also meshes with and gives motion to a second spunwheel, d, upon a shaft, d, carrying a'loose winding-drum, D, and the gear din turn meshes with and contributes motion to a pinion, e, upon a shaft, e', also having a loose winding-drum, E, and j ust above this latter druin is journaled in the frame a small shaft, E', set at a slight incline, the purpose of which will be presently seen. All the shafts c, d', and e are arranged to have a slight endwise inotion by -ineans of a quickserew, e d ez, having crank-handles, as shown, and the spurs and pinions c d e are formed on their inner"faces with clutches c3 d e", respectively, which, when the shafts are shifted, are engaged or disengaged with the respective whirling-drains, and admit ot' either or all of thein being operated atihe will4 of the attendant. l'pon one end of the truck A is placed a pole or mast, F, f rom the top of which extend guy ropes or rodsff, of any suitable material, secured at their outer ends to stumps, trees, or stakes driven into the ground. Upon one of these guysff is placed a frame or carriage, G, provided with two grooved rollers or pulleys, g g, by which it travels upon the guy, and having a block, G', depending from its lower end. To the inner side of the traveling carriage G is secured the end of a hauling-line, g', which passes over a. sheave, g2, at the mast-head, and is then passed down and several times around the drinn l and shaft E', then led again through the shea-ve-bloek at the mast-head, thron gh a leading-sheave, gi, upon the side of the traveler, and ont to the end of the guy f, where it is rove through a block, g, and carried back to the traveler, where it is secured.
To the drum C is secured one end of a skidding-line, h, the other end of which is reve through the sheave-block g2, th ron gh the bloei; G', and is provided with a pair of dogs or tongs,H, for attachment to a log. rlhe device is especially designed for cleaning land and hauling logs to a central point-,where they ina-y be sawed or loaded upon ears, trucks, or sleighs by the machine and drawn to the desired point. The skidding-line h is carried out and attached to a log, while the traveler is drawn out upon the guy as far as may be required. The engine being now started, the drums are revolved, and the skid-line and traveler are brought in at the same time. Should a rook or stninp or other obstruction be in the way, the drum E .is unelntched and the traveler allowed to remain at rest, while, the skid-line being still reeled in, the end of the log is lifted till clear of the obstruction, when, the traveler being again started, the log is dragged over the obstaele and soon brought-to the machine. It will thus be seen that the entire management ofthe log is under the control f the operator at the engine, and he can at any time start or stop any ,or all -of the machinery, as may be required for the proper handling of the timber.
IOO
It is obvious that either a bloelc with three sheaves, as shown in the drawings, or three single blocks, may be used at the mast-head for leading the lines, and any desired kind of clutch or gearing may be used upon the shafts, as may be ai'ound most desirable. By shitting the traveler frein one guy to another a large area of ground may be cleared without changing the position of the trucks. The shaft IQ being` set on an incline prevents the fouling of the line as it passes around it and the druin E.
Having thus fully described iuy invention, ,what I elaiin as new, and desire to seeure by Letters Patent, is*
1. In a log-skidding inaehine, a lruek or platform earrying suitable winding-drums, a device for giving motion to the saine, and a mast guyed out to suitable points, in combination with a traveler upon one of the guys, having a line to haul it in and out connected to the Winding deviees, and a skidding-line carried by the traveler, and also eonneeted to the winding ineehanisni, subsiani ially as shown and described.
2. In a log-skiddingr device, a truc-,li er platform carrying an engine and boiler, a series of Winding-drums loose upon shafts, and eenneeted thereto by means of elutehes, a series of gears and pinions by which said shafts are connected, a niast provided with leadingsheaves, and u series of guy rods or ropes earried out in different directions and secured to trees or stumps, in combination u'ith atraveler having grooved pulleys adapted to run upon the guys, a leading-block upon one side and another suspended below, and a haulingrope rove over the sheaves at the insist-head and around one of the drums, whereby the traveler is hauled in or out, and a skiddingrope provided with means for aitaelnnent to a log, and rove through u bleek upon the traveler, a sheave at the mast-head, and seeured to one o1` the winding-druins, substantially as shown and described.
3. In alog-skiddingr inaehine, ihetravelerG, adapted to travel upon one ofthe guys, and provided With the leading-blocks g G', and the hauling-line g, reve substantially as herein de` scribed, in combination with the eluteli-druiu E and shaft E', set upon an incline, around both of whieh it is passed several tiniesgvhereby the traveler is hauled out or in at the will ofthe operator` and the line is prevented from fouling in passing around the druin and shaft, as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I ai'hx my signal u re in presence of hre witnesses` 'lIOlA (vll Ill] TIER.
