COMBINATION COAT AND PANTS HANGER Filed May '12, 1958 INVENTOR.
BEH- R. S0011 United States Patent COMBINATION COAT AND PANTS HANGER Ben R. Scott, Mount Holly, N. J.
Application May 12, 1958, Serial No. 734,542
4 Claims. (Cl. 22391) This invention relates to hangers and more particularly to a garment'hanger.
It is an object of the present invention to provide an improved type combination coat and pants hanger that is constructed of molded plastic material and is extremely simple in construction and operation.
Another object of the present invention is to provide a combination coat and pants hanger of the above type that has a positive holding action and which can be readily operated with one hand while the garment is held in the other hand.
Other objects of the invention are to provide an improved combination coat and pants hanger bearing the above objects in mind which is of simple construction, has a minimum number of parts, is inexpensive to manufacture and efficient in operation.
For other objects and for a better understanding of the invention, reference may be had to the following detailed description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure l is a perspective view of a hanger made in accordance with the present invention;
Figure 2 is an enlarged transverse cross sectional view taken along line 2-2 of Figure 1;
Figure 3 is an enlarged front elevational view of certain parts of the device shown in Figure 1; and
Figure 4 is an exploded perspective view of certain parts of the apparatus shown in Figure 3.
Referring now more in detail to the drawing, a combined coat and pants hanger made in accordance with the present invention is shown to include a main trapezoidal shaped frame 12 having a pair of longitudinally spaced apart depending hollow support posts 13 on the lower end thereof. As is more clearly shown in Figure 4 of the drawing, each such post 13 slidably receives a slide block 15 having a transversely extending pin 16 which is guidedly received within slots 17 in the side walls of the post. A compression spring 14 disposed within each post normally urges the slide block 15 and supported pin 16 in a downwardly and outwardly direction.
A pair of arms 18 are pivotally supported upon each such pin 16 for selective angular movement relative to each other. These arms 18 each extend through an individual guide ring 20 carried by the associated post 13 so as to urge these arms 18 outwardly in response to an upward movement of the guide block and pin 16. The free end of each such arm 18 is connected to a clamp blade 22, 23, as is more clearly shown in Figures 1 and 2. One such clamp blade 22 is provided with upper and lower spaced apart ribs 24 that are directed inwardly toward engagement with a centrally located single rib 25 on the other clamp blade 23. These ribs 24, 25 provide a positive gripping action when moved into engagement with the pads supported upon the hanger. The central portion of each such clamp blade 22, 23 is provided with a recess 26, 27 for receiving the bulky, seam part of the pants legs without interfering with the positive clamping action of the remaining portion of the clamp blades.
The operation of the hanger will now become appareat. The clamp blades 22, 23 can be forced apart against 2,875,932 Patented Mar. 3, 1959 ice the action of the spring 14 which resists upward movement of the slide block 15 and pivot pin 16 upon which the lower ends of the arms 18 are supported. As is shown in Figure 2, when the clamp arms are so spread apart, it is possible to place the trouser legs therebetween so as to secure them in supported engagement upon the hanger when the clamp blades are brought together by the action of the compression springs 14. In order to facilitate the hanging of the pants, however, releasable latch means are provided for retaining the clamp arms in the spread apart position shown in broken lines in Figure 2 until the pants legs have been properly positioned therebetween. This assembly includes a spring member 28 that is secured at its upper end to each post 13 adjacent to one of the slots 17. An inwardly extending detent 29 intermediate the length of the spring member 28 is operative to underlie the slide block 15 when it is in its uppermost position, in which position the clam blades 22, 23 are spread apart. A finger plate 31 secured to the opposite free end of the spring member 28 provides means for manually urging the detent 29 out of supporting engagement with the slide block to permit it to return to its lower position when it is desired to permit the clamp blades 22, 23 to move to the clamping position.
A swivel member 33 integral with the other end of the frame 12 slidably supports a reversible hook member 34 having a large hook at one end for use on conventional hanger rods and a smaller hook 35 at the opposite end for use on suitcase hangers and other portable hanger units. It is to be noted, however, that the particular components of the illustrated material can be changed in form and .size without departing from the basic concept of the mechanism of the present invention.
While various changes may be made in the detail construction, it shall be understood that such changes shall be within the spirit and scope of the present invention as defined by the appended claims.
What I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent of the United States is:
l. A combined coat and pants hanger comprising, in combination, a main frame having a support hook at the upper end and clamp means at the lower opposite end of said frame, said clamp means including a pair of longitudinally spaced apart and depending support posts, a pair of retractable clamp blades carried by said support posts, and manual means for selectively actuating said clamp blades for movement between an open and a closed position, said support posts being hollow, and said manual means comprising a block slidably supported within each said post, a pair of arms carried by each said clamp blade rotatably supported on said blocks, and guide means for controlling relative movement between said clamp blades in response to sliding movement of said blocks.
2. The combination according to claim 1, wherein said guide means comprises a pair of loops on each said post slidably receiving one of each pair of said arms.
3. The combination according to claim 2, further comprising spring means normally biasing said clamp arms toward said closed position.
4. The combination according to claim 3,'further comprising releasable latch means for securing said clamp arms in an open position against the action of said spring means.
