Application May 3, 1957, Serial No. 656,825
1 Claim. (Cl. 119-48) The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in cow barn gutter grates and has for its primary object to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, novel means for positively preventing the animals from standing with their hind feet in the gutter and thus becoming contaminated.
Another very important object of the invention is to provide a grate of the aforementioned character which may be expeditiously adjusted for installation in gutters of various widths.
Other objects of the invention are to provide an adjustable gutter grate of the character described which will be comparatively simple in construction, strong, durable, compact and which may be manufactured at low cost.
These together with other objects and advantages which will become subsequently apparent reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming a part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a gutter grate embodying the present invention, showing the device installed;
Figure 2 is a vertical sectional view through one end portion of the device, taken substantially on the line 22 of Figure l and drawn to an enlarged scale;
Figure 3 is a fragmentary view in transverse section through an intermediate portion of the device, taken substantially on the line 33 of Figure 1 and drawn to an enlarged scale; and t Figure 4 is a fragmentary view in longitudinal section through the other end portion of the device, taken substantially on the line 4-4 of Figure 1 and drawn to an enlarged scale.
Referring now to the drawing in detail, it will be seen that the embodiment of the invention which has been illustrated comprises an elongated frame of suitable metal which is designated generally by reference character 5. The frame 5, which may also be of any desired dimensions, includes a pair of longitudinal side bars 6, 6a of angle iron which are terminally connected by telescopically adjustable tubular transverse end bars 7, 7a. The tubular end bars 7, 7a of the frame 5 comprise male and female members or sections 8 and 9, 8a, 9a, respectively, which are secured in adjusted position through the medium of setscrews 10, 10a threadedly mounted in said numbers 9, 9a.
Mounted in the frame 5 and fixed to the bar 6 are laterally spaced transverse angle iron grate bars 11, 11a, 11b, 11c, 11d, lie with slidably overlying transverse angle iron grate bars 111, 11g, 11th, 111', lllj, 11k laterally spaced in the frame 5 and fixed to the bar 6a, all of said bars being adapted to traverse the gutter.
It is thought that the use of the device will be readily apparent from a consideration of the foregoing. Briefly, reference character 12 designates the usual gutter in the floor 13 of a cow stall or barn. To install the grate, the setscrews 10, Illa are loosened and the angle iron bars 6, 6a are seated on the upper corner portions 14,-14a of the gutter 12. To accomplish this the frame 5 is adjusted as to Width by slidable adjustment of the end bars 7, 7(rand of the grate bars 11 to He and 11 to 11k relatively. The setscrews 10, lila are then tightened for securing the adjustment. The grate bars 11 to 112 and 11 to 11k are of inverted V-shape in cross section to discourage cows from standing thereon and are spaced apart sufiiciently close together so as not to injure the hoofs of cows or permit the hoofs to pass between said bars. Of course, the lapped inner end portions of the bars 11 permit adjustment of the frame 5.
The foregoing is considered as illustrative only of the principles of the invention. Further, since numerous modifications and changes will readily occur to those skilled in the art, it is not desired to limit the invention to the exact construction and operation shown and described, and accordingly, all suitable modifications and equivalents may be resorted to, falling within the scope of the invention as claimed.
What is claimed as new is as follows:
A cow barn gutter grate comprising a frame including a pair of angle iron side bars adapted to receive the upper corners of a gutter, a pair of telescopic end bars terminally connecting said side bars and providing for lateral adjustment of said side bars relatively to vary the Width of the frame, and angle iron grate bars extending inwardly of said frame from each of said side bars, the angle iron bars extending from one side bar overlapping and slidably engaging the angle iron bars extending from the other side bar to permit varying the width of the frame, said angle iron bars being of inverted V-shape in cross-section to discourage cows from standing thereon.
