Claims. (Cl. 18988) The invention relates to the construction of walls in which relatively thin panels of sheet metal or the like are mounted on a masonry or other type of main wall, primarily to form a finish for the main wall.
The main objects of the invention are to economically, readily and securely mount the panels on the wall, and to this end there is provided a novel attaching or mounting clip which is secured to the wall by screws, bolts, or the like, and to which the sheet panels of pan-like form are applied.

Figure 1 is a perspective of a concrete or cinder block wall with one mounting clip secured thereto and showing adjacent panels applied to the clip.
Figure 2 is a similar illustration of a wall, clip and panel, in which the panel is engaged by one of its upright side flanges.
Figure 3 is a transverse vertical section through the upper portion of a panel, illustrating the initial application of the clip to .the panel.
Figure 4 shows the clip swung approximately 45 from the position shown in Figure 3.
Figure 5 shows the clip swung another 90 in the same direction.
Figure 6 shows the clip swung into functioning position and secured to a Wall. A second panel is indicated as being mounted upon the clip in the position assumed just before the final position of the second panel with the clip.
The wall 1 in Figure l is shown as formed of blocks 3, but could 'be formed of brick, wood or metal. The panels 5, 7 are of pressed metal sheets, each having a main body 9, forming a finish face for the wall. Each has bottom, side and top marginal flanges 10, 11 and 12 respectively. Each panel flange has a plurality of slots 13 which receive portions of the clip.
The clip C is L-shaped and comprises a main, long attaching leg 15, a relatively short supporting leg 16 normal to leg 15 and terminating in an arm 17 parallel to leg 15. Arm 17 is approximately half the width of leg 16. The remaining portion of leg 16 terminates in an offset lip 18 forming an outwardly facing shoulder 19. A retainer strip 20 is struck out from leg 15 and is inclined thereto with its offset end spaced from but opposing leg 16. The clip preferably is formed of sheet metal and retainer 20 is inherently resilient.
The clip leg 15 is inserted into a panel flange slot 13, as indicated in Figure 3, and then swung anticlockwise (Figures 4 and 5) to the final position shown in Figure 6. With the panel and clip assembled as shown in Figure 6, they may be handled as a unit, because the clip will remain assembled due to the spring action of its retainer resisting accidental rotation of the clip in a clockwise direction into disengaging position. The panel and clip may be applied to the wall and leg 15 is attached to the wall, as by a screw 21. In this position, leg 16 supports 2,867,305 Patented Jan. 6, 1959 the panel, and retainer 20 overlies panel flange 12 to prevent the panel and clip being disengaged.
After clip leg 15 has been attached to the wall, a second panel 7 may be set in place with the slot 13 in its bottom flange 12 receiving the upturned short leg 17 of the clip to hold the panel to the wall. It will be understood that panel 7 is supported by a clip through its up- .per flange similar to the supporting of panel 5. This leaves a space between flanges 10 and 12 which will be filled with a calking material, as shown, when the wall is finished. When upper panel 7 is. applied, its lower flange 10 will thrust retainer 20 toward the wall, as indicated in broken lines in Figure 6.
Figure 2 shows a disposition of the clip horizontally with its short arm 17 and lip 18 passing through an upright slot 13 in a flange 11 of a panel 22. This holds the adjacent upright side 'of the panel to the wall although .the panel will be supported by a clip inserted through its upper flange as previously described.
The clip provides a simple effective device for securing the panel to the wall at top, bottom and side, and any of the attachmentclips may be used as a support for the panel. No welding, bolting or similar attachment of the clip to the panel is required.
The details of the clip may be varied without departing from the spirit of the invention, and the exclusive use of modifications coming within the scope of the claim is contemplated.
What is claimed is:
l. A mounting clip for a sheet metal wall panel or the like, comprising an attaching leg, a second leg at one end of the attaching leg and normal thereto, an arm at Y the outer end of the second leg at the same side of said second leg as the attaching leg and substantially paralleling the attaching leg, a portion of the second leg being ofiset therefrom in the same direction as said arm and forming a shoulder facing away from the attaching leg and toward the plane of the second leg, and a retainer strip inclined outwardly from the attaching leg and toward the second leg and having a terminal spaced from the second leg.
2. A clip for mounting a sheet metal panel or the like upon a wall, comprising an L-shaped device having an upright leg apertured for an attaching element, a horizontal leg at the lower end of the upright leg for engaging and supporting a panel flange, said horizontal leg having extensions on its upper side only, one extension forming an upstanding arm parallel to and spaced from said upright leg, and another extension forming a forwardly and upwardly offset lip alongside of said upstanding arm, there being a downwardly and forwardly inclined spring-like retainer strip on said upright leg 0pposing but spaced from said upstanding arm and with its lower end opposing and spaced above said horizontal leg.

The combination with a wall panel of sheet metal or the like having a right angle marginal flange with a slot adjacent to its edge, of a mounting clip of L-shape with an attaching leg and a supporting leg, there being an angular extension at the outer end of the supporting leg parallel to and spaced from the attaching leg and received in said slot, said supporting leg having an offset lip forming a shoulder, opposing the edge of the slot in the panelmarginal flange, and having another shoulder overlying the outer surface of the flange, there being a spring-like strip inclined from the said attaching leg and extending therefrom toward the supporting leg with its terminal engaging the outer surface of said flange adjacent its edge and stably holding the clip on the flange.

In combination with a building wall and a finished surface panel of sheet metal or the like, of means supporting the panel on the wall comprising an L-shaped clip having a long attaching leg parallel to the main face of the panel and provided with an aperture, a fastening extending through the aperture info the wall, the clip having a short supporting leg extending outwardly from said long leg and the wall, the panel having an inturned flange at its lower end overlying said short leg and slotted alongside the same, there being elements side by side on said short leg projecting upwardly through the panel flange slot, one element being offset lengthwise of the short leg and engaging the upper face of the flange, the other element being parallel to the long leg of the clip, there being a spring-like retainer strip inclined away from the long leg of the clip and toward the short leg of the clip with the outer end of the retainer opposing the outer face of the panel flange.
5. A combination according to claim 4 which includes a second panel similarly supported on the wall at a point spaced above the supporting of the first mentioned panel, the second panel having a flange at its lower end slotted and receiving an element of the clip supporting the first panel and held to the Wall thereby.
