1 Claim. (Cl. 2-61) This invention relates to a sock protector for preventing the heels of socks from being worn out by rubber boots, shoepacs or similar foot wear.

An object of this invention is to provide a sock protector that is made from a sheet of soft pliable leather that is shaped to conform to the heel of the wearer and is secured in position by shoe laces or similar fastening means.

The sock protector when worn over the heel when rubber boots or shoepacs are worn will be a great saver for sportsmen, trappers and others that work in the field.

With the above and other objects and advantages in view the invention consists of the minor details of construction, arrangement and combination of parts more fully hereinafter described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which:

Fig. 1 is a side perspective view of the sock protector embodying the invention in place on the heel of a foot of a person;

Fig. 2 is a rear perspective view of the sock protector embodying the invention in place on the heel of a foot of a person;

Fig. 3 is a plan view of the blank from which the sock protector is formed; and

Fig. 4 is a plan view of the reinforcing member for sock protector.

Referring more in detail to the drawing wherein like parts are designated by like reference numerals the reference numeral is used to designate the sock protector embodying the invention.

The body portion of the sock protector is formed from a blank 11, Fig. 3, and a reinforcing member 12, Fig. 4.

The blank 11 is cut from a sheet of soft pliable leather and is substantially rectangular in formation. The size of the sheet depending upon the size of the foot of the wearer.

The sheet 11 has a straight longitudinal edge 13 and centrally of the edge 13 there is provided a recess 14. The recess 14 has straight side edges 15 and 16 and a convex bottom 17. The opposite longitudinal edge 18 is slightly concave and the deepest part of the curve of the edge is in alinement with the recess 14 in the edge 13.

The corners 19 and 20, respectively, that merge with the edge 18, are in an acute angular relation to the edge 18 and each of the corners 19 and 20 is provided with a 2,865,024 Patented Dec. 23, 1958 row of relatively spaced openings 21 to receive a shoe lace.

The transverse edges 22 and 23 of the blank 11 are slightly concave-convex in contour and the corners 19 and 20 extend beyond the edges 22 and 23 to provide tabs.

The reinforcing member 12 of Fig. 4 is substantially Y-shaped in formation having a stem 24 and branches 25 and 26. The stem 24 has a straight end 27, while the branches 25 and 26 each have a rounded end 28.

In forming the sock protector the blank 11 is folded along the transverse medial line until the portion of the edges 13 beyond the recess 14 coincide with each other.

' The member 12 is then secured to the blank 11 by stitching 29, Figs. 1 and 2. The straight end 27 of the stem 24 of the member 12 is contiguous with the edge 13 and the longitudinal edges of the stem 24 are secured to the outer surface of the blank 11 above the recess 14.

The branches 25 and 26 are then secured to the outer surface of the blank 11 at the area contacting the heel of the foot of the wearer and the branches 25 and 26 are also secured to the blank 11 by stitching 29 or the like.

The sock protector is completed by placing a shoe lace 30 in the row of openings 21 and when the shoe lace is tied, as in Fig. 1, the sock protector is retained on the heel of the foot of the wearer.

In Figs. 1 and 2, the sock protector is worn over a sock 31 so that a rubber boot or the like will not wear out the heel of the sock by friction when the wearer is walking.

It is believed that from the foregoing description the structure and manner of use of the sock protector will be apparent to those skilled in the art, and it is to be understood that changes in the minor details of construction, arrangement and combination of parts may be resorted to provided they fall within the spirit of the invention and the scope of the appended claim.

Having thus described the invention what is claimed as new and desired to be secured by Letters Patent is:

- A sock protector for preventing rubber boots and the like from wearing holes in the heel of a sock comprising a substantially rectangular body portion having angular corners adjacent one of its longer sides and a recess formed centrally in its other longer side, said recess having straight side edges and a convex inner edge, the continuation of said straight edges of said recess defining the bottom area of said body, and the remaining portions thereof defining the side areas of said body, and a Y- shaped reinforcing member having a stem portion and a pair of divergent branch portions, said stern portion having its side edges sewed to the side areas of the body in overlying position with respect to the marginal areas adjacent the side edges of said recess and said branch portions having their edges sewed to the lower portions of the side areas and bottom of said body.
