Description

Nov. 25, 1958 D. FISHER 2,861,764
RECEPTACLE HOLDER Filed March 30. 1955 INVENTOR DELPHIS FISHER ATTORNEYS United States Patent RECEPTACLE HOLDER Delphis Fisher, Iron Mountain, Mich.
Application March 30, 1955, Serial No. 498,074
2 Claims. (Cl. 248-146) This invention relates to supporting devices and more specifically, to supportingdevices for ornamental receptacles customarily displayed on lawns.
One of the primary objects of this invention is to provide support means for a vase, flower pot, bird baths or other types of utility and/or ornamental receptacles usually displayed on lawns.
Another primary object of this invention is to provide means of the type described which will permit a lawn mower or other grass trimming apparatus to be driven across the edge and outer portion of the base flange without removing the standard.
Another object of this invention is to provide means of the type to which reference has been made above with means for releasably securing in the ground a standard supporting the above-mentioned receptacle.
A still further object of this invention is to provide means for supporting a receptacle in elevated position relative to the ground, the means being inexpensive to manufacture, non-complex in construction and assembly, and durable in use.
Other and further objects and advantages of the present invention will become more evident from a consideration of the following specification when read in conjunction with the annexed drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is an exploded perspective view of one embodiment of this invention.
Figure 2 is an enlarged fragmentary perspective view of a second embodiment of this invention.
Figure 3 is an enlarged partial side elevational view of the embodiment of the invention illustrated in Figure 1.
Referring now more specifically to the drawing, reference numeral designates, in general, a supporting device for vases, urns, flower pots, bird baths and other receptacles conventionally displayed on lawns or other grassy spots of land. In the first embodiment of this invention, the device 10 is seen to comprise an elongated substantially hollow cylindrical base member 12 having an enlarged plate 14 centrally apertured at 16 and integrally formed therewith or rigidly secured thereto at the upper end thereof.
An elongated substantially cylindrical standard 18 is provided with a radially extending base flange 20 fixedly secured thereto as by welding 22 intermediate the ends of the standard. A substantially circular disc 24 is rigidly secured to the upper end of the standard as by welding at 26.
A plurality of circumferentially spaced'radially extending reinforcing rods 28 have one of their respective ICC 2 ends 30 bent laterally to converge inwardly toward each other, and the laterally bent portions are fixedly secured to the under side of the flange 20 as by welding 32. The longitudinal axes of the rods 28 are substantially parallel to the longitudinal axis of the standard, and the rods 28 have end portions 34 thereof bent radially outwardly and are welded or otherwise secured to the under side of the disc 24. These laterally bent portions 36 project radially beyond the circumference of the disc 24 and are bent upwardly to provide a plurality of clamping fingers 38 which project beyond the upper side of the disc. The fingers 38 terminate in looped ends 40, and the fingers are adapted to flexibly engage against the cylindrical side wall 42' of a flower pot 44 to support the flower pot on the disc 24.
To utilize this apparatus, the cylindrical member 12 is inserted within the ground until the plate 14 is substantially flush with the ground line. Thereafter, the lower end of the standard 18 is then inserted through the plate 14 and into the cylindrical member 12 until the ends 30 of the rod 28 abut against the plate 14. The flower pot 44 or other receptacle is then inserted between the fingers 38 to rest on the supporting disc 24.
When it is desired to cut the grass adjacent to the plate 14, the standard 18 does not have to be withdrawn from the .cylindrical member 12 and the plate 14 to permit a mowing device to be passed over the edge and outer portion of the'plate 14.
The modification of this invention illustrated in Figure 3 is similar to the invention shown in Figures 1 and 2 and elements of the latter modification finding counterparts of the first embodiment are identified by identical reference numerals to which has been added the lower case letter a.
In the invention illustrated in Figure 2, the rods 28 in the original form have been omitted and a plurality of rods 50 spaced substantially apart have one of their respective ends fixedly secured by conventional means to the disc 24a. The rods 50 project beyond the circumference of the disc 24a and are formed with upwardly bent supporting fingers 52 which terminate in loped ends 54. The fingers 52 are adapted to engage the side wall 56 of a bird bath 58 having a base 60 adapted to abut against and be supported by the disc 24a.
With the removal of the rods 28, the flange 20 will directly engage the plate 14 to limit the downward movement of the standard within its base member.
Having described and illustrated two embodiments of this invention, it will be understood that the same are offered merely by way of example, and that the invention is to be limited only by the scope of the appended claims.
What is claimed is:
1. A receptacle holder comprising a plate, a base member secured to said plate and extending perpendicularly thereto, said plate and said member having an axial bore extending therethrough, a standard telescopically carried in said bore and projecting upwardly therefrom, a radial flange secured to said standard intermediate its ends, a disc secured to the upper end of said standard, a plurality of reinforcing rods circumferentially spaced apart and radially spaced outwardly from said standard, an offset lower end portion on each of said rods extend- Patented Nov.-25,--1958;.
ing radially inwardly and secured to said flange, a radially outwardly offset upper portion on each of said rods secured to said disc, and an upwardly olfset end portion extending integrally from said outwardly oifset portion on each of said rods, said rods having the portions there- 5 of between said disc and said flange substantially spaced from said standard.
2. A device as claimed in claim 1 wherein said upwardly offset end portion of said rods extending from said radially outwardly offset portion are resilient and 10 adapted to resiliently clamp a receptacle therebetween.
