Application August 18, 1954, Serial No. 450,670 i s claims. (ci. 5.-354) 1- This invention relates to mattress covers and, more particularly, to mattress covers of the type wherein the covers completely enclose the associated mattress.

Heretofore, the application of a mattress cover of this type to a mattress has been an exceedingly burdensome task. It is usually necessary, for example, to raise the mattress several times to pull or lit the mattress cover material over the entire extent of the mattress.

An object of the present invention is to provide a mattress covering which may be applied to a mattress with relative ease. l

A further object of the invention is to provide a mattress covering which completely encloses the mattress, and which may be slipped onto a mattress with ease. An ancillary object of the invention is to provide a mattress covering element which is sufficiently small in size to be easily handled and applied to a mattress.

A still further object of the invention is to provide a mattress covering of the above type which may be economically manufactured.

In accordance with the present invention, a mattress covering is made of two separate cover sections which t over opposite ends of the mattress and overlap a small amount in the central regions thereof. Since each mattress cover section is only approximately one-half the length of the mattress, it may be handled and slipped over the end of the mattress with ease. In the preferred embodiment of the invention, an elastic band is secured to the open end of each cover and snugly embraces the mattress to hold each mattress cover section in place.

Other objects, advantages and features of the invention will become apparent upon making reference to the specification to follow,4 taken in conjunction with the drawings showing an exemplary embodiment of the invention. Y

The mattress covering constituting the present invention includes a pair of similar, open-end, cover sections 2 and 4 which are fitted over opposite ends of a mattress 6 and overlap a small amount in the medial regions of the mattress. Thematerial surrounding the open end of each cover section preferably includes an elastic band 8 (Figs. 2 and 3) which snugly embraces the mattress to hold the associated cover section in place on the mattress.

The mattress cover sections provide a box-type, tailor sheet linen or other suitable material. Each section includes a central, generally rectangular sheet 10 folded back on itself to form opposite cover walls 12 and 14 which are sized to cover a small amount more thanonehalf the length of the top and bottom surfaces of the mattress 6, and an end wall 16 sized to cover the end of the mattress. Narrow side strips 18 are'sewed to the respective opposed `longitudinal edge portions 20 `of the folded sheet 10, and also to the respective transverse edge portions 22 of the folded sheet to form the sides of the cover section. The width of the side strips are approximately equal to the width ofthe sides of the mattress 6.

One end of the narrow sideY strips 18 is flush with the opposed ends of the folded sheet 10, and together with the adjacent ends of the sheet 10 form a bag having an opening 32.

Each elastic band 8 is secured by a stitched seam 34 to the cover section material around the cover opening 32. The length of the unstretched elastic band is less than the transverse perimeter of the cover section, and the edges of the cover section material about the opening 32 are crimped as at 36 (Fig. 4) during the sewing of the elastic band to the cover section material so that the perimeter of the bag opening when the elastic band is unstretched is less than the corresponding perimeter of the mattress. The elastic band 8 preferably completely surrounds the bag opening, but it may extend only partially around the opening.

An edging strip 38 is folded over the exposed edges of each elastic band and the associated cover section material at the cover opening. The edging material is crimped and stitched to the elastic band and cover section material by stitching 40.

The open ends of the cover sections 2 and 4 are slipped over opposite ends of the mattress 6, and the cover sections are arranged so that the end walls 16 thereof are adjacent the mattress ends and the top and bottom surfaces 12 and 14 cover the top and bottom mattress surfaces. The stretching of the elastic bands 8 to a size to accommodate the mattress causes the crimped edges of the cover material and the edging strip to flatten out and present smooth surfaces, and the resiliency of the elastic bands embracing the mattress holds the cover sections snugly to the mattress.

Due to the size and construction of the mattress covering made up of the sections 2 and 4, the mattress cover sections may be easily handled and inserted on and removed from the mattress with ease.

It should be understood that numerous modifications may be made of the preferred embodiment of the invention above described without deviating from the broader aspects of the invention.

The term mattress as used in the claims is intended to include box springs, link springs, coil bed springs, and the like.

I claim:

1. In combination with a mattress, a mattress covering formed from a pair of overlapping bag-like cover sections which surround opposite ends of the mattress and each of which extends `along only part of the length of the mattress, one of which bag-like sections overlies a part of the top surface of the mattress and also the adjacent part of the bottom surface of the mattress, and the other bag-like section overlies the remainder of the top and the bottom surfaces of the mattress, and means at the overlapped portion of said sections for holding the mattress cover sections in place on the mattress.
