(Cl. 30-200) This invention relates to improvements in hair clippers having interchangeable comb plates. Andis Patent No. 2,168,642 is anexample of prior art devices of this character.

The device of the present invention is provided with an improved mechanism which releasably attaches interchangeable comb plates to the clipper case. In the device of the present invention the several comb plates and the bed portion of the clipper case are provided with dowel and socket means for accurately positioning and releasably mounting the comb plate on the clipper case. In its mounted position the comb plate is operatively associated with the shear blade which is semi-permanently connected to the motor armature. The shear blade is common to the several interchangeable comb plates and remains secure to the armature on removal of the comb plate.

In the device of the present invention the dowels are releasably secured in the clipper case bed sockets by means of a transverse shaft which intersects the socket and dowel posts, the dowel posts being provided with notches into which a portion of the shaft interfits in one position thereof whereby to interlock the comb plate to the bed. The transverse shaft is also provided with notches which align with the dowel posts in another position of the shaft, thus to permit withdrawal of the dowel posts from the sockets and removal of the comb plate from the bed.

Fig. 1 is a fragmentary cross sectional view taken through the head of a hair clipper embodiment of the present invention, the comb plate being shown separated from the bed.

Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view of the bed portion of the clipper case, the comb plate being removed and being shown in Fig. 3 which is a plan view of the inside mating surface thereof.

Fig. 4 is a perspective view of a typical detachable comb plate embodying the invention.

Fig. 5 is a fragmentary cross sectional view showing the clipper case and comb plate in interconnected position.

Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the rock shaft.

The clipper case 10 contains the usual vibratory motor (not shown) and armature 8 to which the shear blade driving arm 11 is connected. The shear blade 12 may have a conventional articulate connection at 13 to the driving arm 11.

Operatively associated with the shear blade 12 are interchangeable comb plates, a typical one of these being illustrated at 13 in the drawing. The several comb plates 13 will differ in the thickness and spacing of their teeth 14 whereby to adapt the device for various clipping functions. When mounted the respective comb plates 13 must be very accurately registered with the shear blade 12 which is s'cmipermanently connected to the driving arm 11 and remains with the main body of the clipper notwithstanding removal of the comb plate.

The clipper case 10 is provided with a bed 15 having plural laterally spaced sockets 16, desirably two in numher. The comb plate 13 has correspondingly laterally spaced dual dowel posts 17, these being desirably mount- 2 ed on a plate 18 fastened by screws 19 or the like to the inner face of the comb plate 13.

The respective dowels 17 are provided with notches 21 which, when the comb plate is in mounted position as shown in Fig. 5,align with a transverse bore 22 through the bed 15 and which receives the oscillatory rockshaft 24. The rockshaft has notches 25 spaced apart a distance corresponding to the lateral spacing of the sockets 16. By appropriate oscillation of shaft 24 the notches may be made to align with the sockets 16 as shown in Fig. 1 whereby the shaft 24 will be clear of the path of the parts in sockets 16 to admit the dowel posts 17 thereto. In another oscillatory position of the rockshaft 24 as shown in Fig. 5 the notches 25 are turned away from alignment with the socket l6 and portions of the rockshaft proper are turned thereinto to be received within the notches 21 in the dowel posts 17 and thereby interlock the dowel posts to the bed 15. Rockshaft 24 is provided with a handle 26 exposed at the side of the clipper head and which provides a crank arm for manipulation of the rockshaft.

From the foregoing it is clear that the comb plate 13 is detachably mounted on the clipper case bed 15 and is securely locked in position when the rockshaft 24 is turned to its position shown in Fig. 5. When the rockshaft is rotated to its position shown in Fig. l, the comb plate 13 is readily removed and a different comb plate may be substituted therefor.

I claim:

1. In a hair clipper having a shear blade, the combination of a clipper case having a bed member and a comb plate member, one of said members having a socket and the other having a dowel post, said comb plate member being mounted on said bed member for coaction with the shear blade when said post is seated in said socket, a transverse shaft intersecting said socket, said dowel post being provided with a notch into which a portion of said shaft interfits in one position thereof whereby to interlock the comb plate to the bed, said shaft having a notch which aligns with said dowel post in another position of said shaft whereby to permit withdrawal of said dowel post from said socket and removal of the comb plate from the bed.

In a hair clipper, the combination with a clipper case having a bed portion, a motor, a shear blade and means mounting said shear blade on said motor, of a comb plate removable from said clipper and from association with said shear blade, said bed portion being provided with spaced mounting sockets, a transverse rockshaft bore intersecting said sockets and a rockshaft in said bore, said comb plate being provided with correspondingly spaced mounting dowel posts receivable in said sockets whereby to properly align the comb plate with the shear blade when the parts are interconnected, said dowel posts being provided with notches into which portions of said rockshaft inter-fit in one position of rockshaft oscillation whereby to interlock the comb plate to the bed, said rockshaft having correspondingly spaced notches which respectively align with said dowel posts in another position of rockshaft oscillation whereby to permit withdrawal of said dowel posts from said sockets and removal of the comb plate from the bed.
