Description
W. PRICE.
v Cotton-Planter. No. 28,602. I Patented June 5, 1860.
I UNITED STATES WHITMAN PRICE, OF MOUNT OLIVE, NORTH CAROLINA;
IMPROVEMENT IN MACHlNES FOR PLANTING COTTON-SEED.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 2,602, dated June 5, 1860.
To all whom itpnay concern- -Mount Olive, Wayne county, in the State of North Carolina, have invented a new and Improved Machine for Planting Cotton-Seeds; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, in which- Figure 1 is a side view. Fig. 2 is the same view with the wheels elevated above the opener. Fig. 3 is a vertical section through the hopper. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the bottom of the hopper and slide. Fig. 5 is a plan view of the opener with the mold-boards and leveler attached.
To enable others skilled in the art'to make and use my invention, I will proceed to de scribe its construction and operation.
In its construction, in Fig. 1, A is the frame; B, the opener; E, the large driving-wheel; L, the small wheel; M, the front brace; O, the hopper; N, the handles; F, the shaft of the main driving-wheel.
In Fig. 3, D is the revolving wheel on shaft F, on which are two arms or pins on the same axle, and revolvein the hopper 0; e, the slide at the bottom of the hopper.
In Fig. 4, O is the hopper; e, the slide, showing how the slide operates.
In Fig. 5, B is the opener; A, the frame; (3, the leveler; a a, the mold-boards.
In the operation of my invention the machine is put in motion by the main drivingwheel E, the opener B opening the earth for the reception of seed, and as the wheel E revolves the shaft F it gives motion to the wheel D, with arms revolving in hopper O, which agitates and separates the seeds, allowing them to drop through the slide e. The wheel L follows immediately after and presses the seeds in the ground, and the mold-boards a a cover the seed, and leveler 0 follows, leveling it over, making the ground smooth. Arms H H, with flexible joints K at axle F, with beam I, serve-to regulate the wheels and hopper to the irregularities of the ground. The opener B is secured to beam I by standard M.
Having described the nature and operation of my invention, what I claim asnew, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
Ihe arrangement of frame A, mold-boards rt (0, leveler 0, wheels E and L, wheel D, with arms in hopper 0, arms H H, fleXiblejoint K, and standard M, the whole operating as de-- scribed, and for the purposes set forth.
WHITMAN PRICE.
