BOTTLE WRAPPER A'ND CUSHICN.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 285,872, dated October 2, 1883.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, EDMUND O. BERNING- HAUS, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful Improved Bottle Wrapper and Cushion, of which the following is a specification.

The object of my invention is to provide an improved bottle wrapper and cushion for bottles and similar articles liable to fracture, and to better protect the same when packed in boxes .for storage, shipment, and transportation pureach bottle. Fig. 2 is a plan view of my wrap-.

A A A represent a series of the like thin spiral and tubular shaped strips of wood that I employ in the making of my improved wrapper and cushion. These spiral and tubular shaped strips of wood are made by simply planing a board of wood, the bit of the plane being set diagonally, to out not only the wood into thin veneer-like strips, but at same time give the same the spiral turns, marked a a, 850., and the tubular shape when taken in any point in cross-secti0n. (See b, Figs. 2 and 3.) I further employ two sheets of paper, marked a d, (see figures,) one face of each sheet being prepared with adhesive matter, such as glue or the like. Next I place a Sufficient number of the spiral and tubular shaped pieces of Wood alongside of each other, or in the rows, as indicated in the drawings, and between the aforesaid two sheets of paper; and, lastly, the said sheets of paper, by a slight pressure, are made to adhere to each side of the wood (top and bottom) and cement the whole together, as indicatec. A wrapper and cushion is thus made to consist of thin spiral and tubular shaped pieces of wood interposed between two exterior sheets of paper, and possessing the following advantages: The spiral and tubular conformations of the wood render the wrapper, 850., sufficiently soft, yielding, or spring-like to cushion the bottle or fragile article, and this effect is had in either uses of the materialviz. as simply a wrapper or envelope around the bottle, or, secondly, when the material is used to cushion the top and bottom of the bottle, 820., when packed in the box, as shown in Fig. 1. As a wrapper, the material is cut into the varying sizes to suit bottles, 850., and is simply folded, around the bottle, (see Fig. 1,) the meeting edges of the paper fitted to stick together and retain the wrapper in its cylindrical shape. The material can also be interposed between the top and bottom of the bottle and the box, so as to cushion the article, and when the material is used in both ways as wrapper and cushion-the bottle, 850., can be most adequately and safely protected.

What I claim is As a new article of manufacture, a packing, wrapper, envelope, or cushion for bottles and fragile articles, consisting of thin strips of wood coiled spirally in a longitudinal direction, and tubular in cross-section, united to and interposed between an under and a top sheet of paper, substantially as described.
