TICKET PUNGH. N0. 285,867. Patented Oct. 2, 1883.
, ihvirnn STATES- ATENT Ormes@ ROBERT VOODMAN, OF MALDEN, MASSACHUSETTS.
TICKET-PUNCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 285,867, dated October k2, 1883.
Application filed August 15, 1883.
To all whom, it may concern.-
Beit known that I, ROBERT VooDMAN, of Malden, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Ticket-Punches, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification, in whichy Figure 1 is a side elevation of a ticketpunch constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical seetion through the center of the same with the parts in a different position. Fig. 3 is a plan ofthe under side of the same. Fig. 4 is a section on the line xx of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a seetion on the line y y of Fig. 1.
My invention relates to certain improvements on the punch for which Letters Patent ofthe United States were granted to Cyrus B. Holden, August 14, 1866, No. 57 ,136, and has for its object to facilitate the egress or discharge of the chippings or pieces cut from the article being punched, whereby they are prevented from accumulating within the punch and obstructing the moving parts thereof', as frequently occurs in punches made in accordance with the aforesaid patent of C. B. Holden, and which has proved to be a serious objection to their use.
To this end my invention consists in providing one of the levers immediately above the ticket-slet with an open space extending along the entire length of the ticket-slot and up therefrom into the groove within which is placed the arm which carries the male die,
4and also in providing an aperture extending from the lower side of the ticket-slot down through the head of the lever .in line with the iirst aperture above referred to, by which construction a free outlet is afforded for any chippings which may chance to be carried up with the male die, and which have heretofore often introduced themselves between the arm which carries the male die and the sides and bottom of the groove -or recess in which it worked, thus interfering with its free movement, the bottom of the said groove having been heretofore closed to form one of the walls of the ticket-slot, and having been provided with a (No model.)
single small aperture only at its front end for the passage of the male die.
My invention also consists in providing the f 'having at one end a head or enlargement, '1), in the upper portion Aof which is formed a deep longitudinal groove or recess, c, within which, at its forward end, is pivoted at d, the' lever B, which bears at c upon the upper side of an arm, C, also situated within the groove c, and pivoted near its rear end on a transverse pin, f, the said arm C being kept in contact with the lever B by means of a Afiat spring, g, secured at one end to the lever A and bearing at its opposite end upon the rear end of the arm C. 'The head b of the lever A is divided into two parts, l() 12, by a deep transverse slot, h, which is intended for the reception of the ticket or other article to be punched, the said slot extending longitudinally inward from the outer end of the punch. The forward end of the arm C has secured to it the male die or punch i, which, when the arm O is depressed by means of the lever B, passes down across the sloth into the female die k in the portion 10 of the head b, to perforate the ticket or other article previously entered within the sloth.
The construction thus far described is substantially the same as that of the punch described and shown in the aforesaid patent of C. B. Holden, and forms no part of my present invention, being merely referred to in order to clearly illustrate my improvements thereon, which will new be described.
The bottom of the groove c (which in `the Holden punch was merely provided with a small aperture near its front end for the passage of the punch) is entirely cut away from the front end of the portion 12 of the head b backward, leaving immediately beneath the arm C an open space, m, extending from the ICQ groove c down into the slot h, a free outlet being thus Vafforded for the escape of any chippings or pieces punched from a ticket or other article, which may be carried up by the male diez into the groove or recess c, and which have heretofore been liable to accumulate between the arm C and the closedv bottom and sides of the groove c, andl thus obstruct the said arm and render the punch inoperative. The lower portion, l0, of the head b is also provided with a long narrow aperture, a, extending downward from the slot 71y through to the outside, as seen in Figs. 2 and 5, and situated in line with the space m, in order to af ford a means o'f escape for any chippings which may pass down from the groove c into the slot h, or be carried into the latter by the Ypunch'i in its ascent, all liability ofthe punch becoming obstructed by chippings or dirt being thus avoided, and the cost of repairs materially reduced'.
In each side of the portion l2 of the head b is formed a long na-rrow slot, 1),'eXtending into the groove or recess c, whereby a eonvenient means is afforded for cleaning out any chippings or dirt Vwhich may collect between the upper surface of the arm C and the under side of the lever B, thus avoiding the inconvenience and delay caused by taking the le- `vers A and B apart, as has heretofore been 3o and provided with an open space, m, immediately beneath the arm C, extending from the groove cinto the ticketslot lz, and with a discharge-aperture, n, in the portion 10, extend ing' downward from the slot h, all constructed and arranged to operate substantially in the manner and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a ticket-punch, the combination, with the lever B and the die-carrying arm C, of 4 5 the lever A, having apertures p in its sides, extending into vthe groove c, in which the arm C is pivoted, substantially as and for the purpose described.
Witness my hand this 11th day of August, 5o A. D. 1883.
ROBERT wooDMAN.
