Description
United States Patent FOLDING PAPERBOARD CARRIER- Karl H. von Gaa, Port Washington, N. Y., assigner to gontinental Can Company, Inc., a corporation of New ork Application June 18, 1956, Serial No. 591,843 4 Claims. (Cl. 220-103) The invention relates to folding paperboard carriers for `bottles and the like.
Summary `My invention comprises a folding paperboard carrier having a handlel section including an opening for the fingers of the user, and a coupon tab attached to the handle section at .or above the top edge of such opening i up or totingmy carrier. This alerts him to the presence of the coupon. VAndthe coupon tab canbe pushed with the forefinger to raise it for easy detachment.
Because the coupon tab extends down into a cell of the carrier where it lies behind the bottle or other article placed in the cell, it is protected against accidental detachment. Yet the purchaser is quickly apprised of the presence of the coupon by feel when he picks up the carrier by the handle, and, once the bottle has been removed, lifting and detachment of the tab is facilitated by the arrangement I have provided. So the functions of protection against unwanted detachment of the coupon, ease of detachment when wanted, and of reminding the purchaser that the coupon is there to be detached, are all provided in the one simple construction I have invented.
Additionally, my construction is particularly well adapted to be manufactured on existing machines for carrier fabrication, for the coupon tab extends from a downwardly folded glue ap at the top of the handle of the carrier. I have discovered that in making the carrier in its flat folded form as produced for shipment, the coupon tab can be left outside the adjacent folded end wall where it will lie when the carrier is folded and glued in the normal sequence of steps. Yet this does not interfere with erection of the carton, for what happens is that the outwardly swinging end wall panel lifts the tab until such panel swings beyond the tab whereupon the tab will drop down into the adjacent cell of the carrier without any attention by the person wh-o is setting up the carrier.
Description In the drawings in which I have illustrated the best mode contemplated by me for carrying out my invention:
Fig. l is a face view of my improved carrier in its flat folded form as it appears just before the final folding and gluing step, i. e.'before the glue flap at the top of the handle portion of the carrier has been folded over and glued.
Fig. 2 is a similar view of the at folded carrier as it appears following the final folding and gluing step, i. e. after the glue iiap at the top vof the handle portion of the carrier has been folded over and glued, bringing the 2,857,077 Patented Oct. 21, 1958 r'ce panel lifts the coupon tab until such panel swings beyondl the tab, whereupon the tab will drop down into the adjacent cell of the carrier as shown in Fig. 4, which is a perspective view of the fully erected carrier.
Fig. 5 is a vertical transverse sectional view taken as indicated at 5 5 in Fig. 4.
Fig. 6 is a view similar to Fig. 5, illustrating how the coupon tab can be pushed with the foret-Inger to raise it for easy detachment. A
. My invention has to do with an improvement in the general type of folding paperboard carrier for bottles and the like, which comprises side wall panels 7, and end wall panels 8 arranged at each side of a centrally arranged handle section 9, the side wall panels being connected to the handle sectionby the end wall panels, and means for ,partitioning the carrier to provide three cells at each side of the handle section, such as the partition straps 10, the handle section extending above the side and end wall panels, In this type of carrier a fold-v ing bottom section 11 extends from .the lowerY edges Vof the side wall panels 7 as dened by .foldlinesl f formed by scoring the paperboard in a customary manner.- Vertical fold lines f forni hinges for the'side and end wall panels, and for the partition straps`1tl, during erection of thercarrier. v ,Y Y 5,
`A detachable coupon tab 12extends'froin` a down- 'I wardly folding glue ilap 13 at the top of handle section 9 of the carrier. Tab 12 is attached to flap 13 at a line of severance 14 formed by suitable cuts or perforations, etc. As seen in Fig. 4, the tab 12 is connected to an upper portion of the handle section in a position to extend downwardly behind an article carried by one of the outer cells of the carrier. See also Fig. 5 in which the tab extends downwardly behind a bottle B.
Handle section 9 includes an opening 15 for the fingers of the user. As best seen in Figs. 2 and 4, the coupon tab extends downwardly over a portion of this opening, as at 16, for engagement by a forefinger of the person who is picking up or toting the carrier. This alerts him to the presence of the coupon, And the coupon tab can be pushed with the forefinger to raise it for easy detachment as illustrated in Fig. 6.
By comparing Figs. 1 and 2, it will be seen that in the final folding and gluing step performed in producing the carrier in its flat folded form, glue ap 13 of the handle portion is folded over, bringing the attached coupon tab 12 against the outside of the adjacent folded end wall 8 of the body portion of the carrier. The carrier as so produced can be shipped by the box maker to the customer in the form shown in Fig. 2 and with the coupon tab left outside the adjacent folded end wall 8. This arrangement of the tab does not interfere with erection of the carrier because, during erection, the outwardly swinging end wall panel 8 lifts the tab in the manner shown in Fig. 3 until such panel swings beyond the tab, whereupon the tab will drop down into the adjacent cell of the carrier without any attention by the person who is setting up the carrier.
The terms and expressions which I have employed are used in a descriptive and not a limiting sense, and I have no intention of excluding such equivalents of the invention described, or of portions thereof, as fall within the scope of the claims.
I claim:
1. In a folding paperboard carrier for bottles and the like, a handle section which includes an opening for the fingers of the user, and a'coupon tab attached to the handle section at'or above the upper edge of said opening and extending downwardly over a portion of said opening for engagement by the foreiinger whereby the user is alerted to the presence of the coupon and so that the coupon tab can be pushed with the forenger to raise it for easy detachment.
2. In a folding paperboard carrier for bottles and the like, comprising side and end wall panels arranged at each side of a centrally arranged handle section, the side wall panels connected to the handle section by the end wall panels, and means for partitioning the carrier to provide three cells at each side of the handle section, the handle section extending above the side and end wall panels, a detachable coupon tab connected to an upper portion of the handle section in a position to extend downwardly behind an article carried by one of the outer cells of the carrier, the handle section including an opening for the lingers of the user, and the coupon tab being attached to the handle section near the upper edge of said opening and extending downwardly over a portion of said opening for engagement by the foretinger whereby the user is alerted to the presence of the coupon and so that the coupon tab can be pushed with the forenger to raise it for easy detachment.

4. ln a folding paperboard carrier for bottles and the like, comprising side and end wall panels .arranged at each side of a centrally arranged handle section, the side wall panels connected to the handle section by the end wall panels, and means for partitioning the carrier to provide three cells at each side of the handle section, the handle section extending above the side and end wall panels, a detachable coupon tab connected to an upper portion of the handle section in a position to extend downwardly behind an article carried by one of the outer cells of the carrier, the lower part of the coupon tab extending into overlapping relationship to the adjacent wall panel.
