BL AND REMOVABLE RECEIVER CONNECTION (Granted under Title 35, U. S. Code (1952), sec. 266) The invention described herein may be manufactured and used by or for the Government for governmental purposes without the payment of any royalty thereon.
My invention relates to a recoil-operated, fixed gun and more particularly to such a gun supplied with a reanother application by me entitled, Operating -Mechanism for a Short Firearm, Serial No. 429,706, filed May 13, 1954, for copending consideration therewith.
Such guns are usually mounted with the receivers thereof projecting into a limited space such as the interior of a tank.
It is important that the parts of the gun be easily replaceable with the greatest possible economy of motion within the space.
It is an object of my invention, therefore, to provide a gun having a barrel slidable in a mounting block with a removable receiver.
Another object of my invention is to provide such a gun with a receiver transversely rotatable with respect to the mounting block to permit forward removal of the barrel from the gun.
A further object of my invention is to provide such a gun with a receiver rotatable with respect to the mounting block and a feeder transversely pivoted on the receiver to permit rearward replacement of the barrel in the gun.
According to my invention a recoil-operated gun is provided with a fixed mounting block for slidably supporting a barrel and a box receiver having a feeder hinged by removable pins to the lateral edges of the top of the receiver. The mounting block and the receiver are secured together when the gun is assembled by means of cooperating lateral flanges and a pair of laterally opposed receiver pins spring-biased to project into corresponding holes in the mounting block.
The barrel of the gun is slidable in the mounting block and includes an axially disposed peripheral slot having a transverse surface. The mounting block is provided with a latch spring-biased to project into the slot and engage the transverse surface to dispose the barrel in battery position in the mounting block. The barrel also includes a circumferential groove adjacent the breech thereof. A barrel extension slidably disposed in the receiver and spring-biased to a position thereof corresponding to the battery position includes a yoke for extending into the groove for integral operation of the barrel and the extension when the gun is assembled.
The receiver is rotatable about either of the springbiased pins and the yoke is disposed for disengagement from the barrel, when the other of the pair of pins is withdrawn from the mounting block, to permit forward removal of the barrel from the gun. The barrel may be rearwardly removed from the gun when, in addition, the feeder is rotated about either of the hinge pins thereof.
For a more complete understanding of my invention,
This application is submitted with r P t fo attention is directed to the following description and the accompanying drawings in which:
Fig. 1 is a partial elevational view of a gun incorporating my invention;
Fig. 2 is a breech view of the gun shown in Fig. 1 with the receiver rotated out of juxtaposition with the mounting block and the feeder; and
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the gun in the condition described in Fig. 2, with the feeder oppositely pivoted from the receiver. 1
In the drawing a recoil-operated gun 12 is provided with a fixed mounting block 14 having a pair of lateral flanges 16 and 18 including a transverse surface 20. A receiver 22 of the gun includes corresponding lateral flanges 24 and 26 for respective engagement with flanges 16 and 18 and a laterally-extending flange 27 provided on mounting block 14 to axially secure a surface 28 of flanges 24 and 26 in engagement with surface 20 when the gun is assembled. 'Left and right latches 30 and 31 are-sprin g-biased on receiver 22 for engagement with respective corresponding holes 32 and 33 in mounting block 14 to transversely secure receiver 22 to mounting block 14. i
A barrel 34 slidable in mounting block 14 includes a breech flange 36 formed by a circumferential groove 38. A latch 40 is pivoted on mounting block 14 and springbiased for engagement of a surface 42 thereof with a surface 44 in an axial groove 46 of barrel 34 to locate such barrel in the battery position thereof with respect to mounting block 14. g
A barrel extension 48 slidable within receiver 22 is biased to a forward position corresponding to the battery position of barrel 34 by a pair of springs 50 in engagement with the rear end of receiver 22. A yoke 52 of extension 48 engages groove 38 for integral operation of barrel 34 and extension 48 when the gun is assembled.
A cartridge feeder 54 is pivotally connected to right and left sides 56 and 58 of receiver 22 by a pair of spring- biased latch pins 60 and 62. Feeder 54 may be pivoted about either of pins 60 or 62, when receiver 22 is rotated from juxtaposition with mounting block 14 to permit barrel 34 to be rearwardly removed from the gun.
As indicated by the above description, barrel 34, receiver 22 and feeder 54 may be quickly and easily replaced in the gun. In addition, heated barrels 34 may be easily replaced from the rear of the gun to increase the accuracy of the gun and increase the life of the barrels.
Although a particular embodiment of the invention has been described in detail herein, it is evident that many variations may be devised within the spirit and scope thereof and the following claims are intended to include such variations.
