SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 284,810, dated September 11, 1883. Application filed June 21, 1883 (No model.)

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, GILBERT H. BUNCH, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Lakeville, in the county of St. Joseph and State of Indiana, have in vented certain new and useful Improvements in Plow-Oolters and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in attachments for plows, which are adapted to cut clover or straw, or other material which may lie in front of the plow-point, so as to provide apassage-way for the plow through land upon which there is clover, weeds, or other material which would render the plowing difficult; andto this end my invention consists in supporting a rolling colter upon wheels, the colter and wheels being mounted on the same axle and rigidly attached thereto, and in providing a knife which projects in front of the colter, above which the colter rotates, so as to cut and separate the weeds in front of the plow.

My invention also consists in the construction and arrangement of the parts, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth, and pointed out in the claims.

In the annexed drawings, which illustrate my invention, Figure l'is a perspective view, showing the same applied to a plow. Figs. 2 and 3 are detailed views.

A represents the plow-beam,to which is secured my attachment by means of a casting, B, which projects downwardly therefrom, the angular portion of this casting being pro vided with transverse slots through which pass bolts for attaching the same to the plowbeam. By means of these slots and bolts the plow-beam may be adjusted to either side, as desired. The downwardly-proj ecting portion of this casting B is provided with projecting flanges b b, and a slot which is parallel with said flanges. Within these flanges, by means of a bolt, is secured the arm 0 of the frame,

which frame from the casting B is bent downwardly and forwardly, as shown, and is branched so as to extend over the edge of the colter. From the colter the main frame projects outwardly horizontally, and is bent at right angles to the axle, the axle being secured to the end of the frame in suitable journals, so as to be capable of rotation.

To the axle,which is indicated by the letter D, is secured a circular colter, E, which has a sharp edge, the same being rigidly attached to the center of the axle, so as to be on a line withthe standard 0 of the frame. To the ends of the axle outside of the frame are secured two wheels which are of a greater diameter than the colter hereinbefore referred to. These wheels are also rigidly secured to the axles, so that when they rotate they will carry the colter with them.

The frame 0 is preferably made in two parts, the same being united to each other belowthe casting B, and the frame is separated at its center, so as to provide a passage-way for the colter E, as shown. It is also provided with an opening through which passes the vertical end of the knife. This knife, as indicated by the letter G, projects under and in front of the colter, the same being pointed at its forward end, and sharpened on its upper surface. At a point near-the central part of this knife, and immediately under the colter, is provided a dovetailed recess in which is placed a block, 9, which may be of lead, wood, or

other suitable material which will not dull the edge of the colter. If desirable, this block may be provided with a groove in which the edge of the colter fits. The vertical end of this knife passes through an opening in the standard, and is secured thereto by a suitable bolt, the upper end of the knife being provided with perforations for adjustment, and akey for securely holding the same in place. The upper end of the frame is also provided with perforations, so that the same may be adjusted nearly vertically in relation to the plow-beam.

Having described my invention, its operation will be as follows: WVhen the parts are at tached to the plow as hereinbefore described and shown, the wheels on the ends of the axles will be in contact with the surface of the unplowed ground. When the horses are started, the point of the knife will enter the ground slightly and run under the clover, and the colter will sever the same upon the surface of the ground, thus forming a passage-way for the front of the plow, so as not to cause any obstruction in plowing land which is covered either with clover or other material.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. The plow attachment herein described, consisting of a forwardly-projecting knife, and a rolling colter attached to a shaft provided with side wheels, said colter adapted to operate above and in contact with the knife, substantially as shown, and for the purpose set forth.

2. An attachment for plows, consisting of the frame 0, attached adj ustably to the plowbeam, and provided with an axle carrying side wheels and a circular colter, in. combination with a forwardly-projecting knife located under said colter, substantially as described.

3. The frame 0, attached to a plow-beam by means of casting B, and bifurcated at its forward central portion, so as to embrace the GILBERT H. BUNCH.
