Application March 4, 1957-, Serial No. 643,721 Claims. 01. 66-177) The herein disclosed invention relates to leggings or wristlets and has for an object to provide a construction which may be worn over the overshoe and cuff of a mans trousers or the ladies stocking or over the wrists to keep the wears limbs warm and to prevent entry of snow into the overshoe.

Another object of the invention resides in providing a legging which can be constructed from knitted tubular stock.

An object of the invention resides in providing a legging having a shell with a liner in the same.

A still further object of the invention resides in utilizing a piece of the stock of substantially twice the length of the legging and having spaced ribbed sections intermediate the ends of the piece and expanded sections at the ends of and between the ribbed sections.

Another object of the invention resides in forming the ribbed sections of the piece of stock with folds intermediate the ends thereof to form from the piece of stock between the folds and shell, with the intermediate section constituting a body for the shell and the adjoining portions of the ribbed section cuffs for the shell.

A still further object of the invention resides in inserting the portions of the piece of stock outwardly of the folds into the shell to form a liner for the shell with the outer portions of the ribbed sections constituting cufrs for the liner and the end expanded sections constituting body portions of the shell.

Another object of the invention resides in making the combined length of the outer expanded sections substantially equal to the length of the intermediate expanded section.

A feature of the invention resides in providing a seam between the inner ends of the outer expanded sections.

An object of the invention resides in utilizing ribbed stitches for the ribbed sections and cardigan stitches for the expanded sections.

Other objects of the invention reside in the novel combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter illustrated and/ or described.

The instant invention is constructed by knitting and is made from a piece of tubular stock 10 illustrated in Fig. 3. This piece of stock is knitted to form two spaced ribbed sections 11 and 12 which are of a length equal to twice the length of the desired cuff for the legging and ice of a circumference suflicient to permit of stretching over the shoe of the wearer. Between the sections 11 and 12 is an expanded section 13 of a length equal to the desired length of the body of the legging and having the same number of stitches as the sections 11 and 12. At the outer ends of the sections 11 and 12 are other expanded sections 14 and 15 which are constructed similarly to the section 13 and which are of a length substantially half of the length of the section 13.

The sections 11 and 12 of the legging are knitted with a ribbed stitch such as diagrammatically shown in Fig. 5 to permit of stretching of the same to enable the user to apply the legging over the shoe. The expanded sections 13, 14 and 15 are preferably made with a half cardigan stitch as illustrated in Fig. 6. If desired, however, a full cardigan stitch may be used or alternate groups of cardigan and ribbed stitches employed. The purpose of the stitching employed for the body is to give a greater circumference to the expanded sections and to produce a tighter structure giving greater warmth and serving the desired purpose of the invention to greater advantage.

In the construction of the invention, one end 16 of the piece of tubular stock 10 is inserted into the adjoining portion of the stock and threaded through the same until this end lies flush with the opposite end 17. The two ends are then stitched together on a sewing machineto form a seam 18. Any suitable stitch may be used for the purpose as for example a surge stitch, single needle stitch, trimmed edge stitch, double lock or a trimmed edge stitch covered by a double needle cover stitch through both thicknesses of the fabric. After being sewed together, the joined ends are shifted into the center of the legging where the 'seam 1'8 lies opposite the middle of the legging.

When the article is constructed as above described, a legging is formed having a shell 20 with a. liner 21 extending throughout the shell and integral therewith. The shell is formed with cuffs 22 and 23 and with a body 24 the'rebetween. In a similar manner the liner 21 is formed with cuffs 25 and 26 and a body 27 therebetween. The body 24 is formed from the expanded section 13 while the body 27 is formed from the two expanded sections 14 and 15. Cuffs 22 and 25 are formed from the ribbed section 11 which is provided with a circumferential fold 28 intermediate the ends thereof and dividing the two cuffs. In a similar manner, the cuffs 23 and 26 are formed from the section 12 which likewise is provided with a circumferential fold 29 separating the two cuffs. The liner 21 is hence integral with the shell 20.

In use the legging is slipped over the shoe and over the trouser of the user. The overshoe is then applied and the legging brought down to cover both the trouser and the overshoe. When used by a woman, the same procedure is adopted except that the legging is placed on the stocking of the wearer. The article could be similarly Worn by a man, by placing it over the overshoe and his sock and under his trousers. When properly applied, the article provides warmth at the top of the overshoe and also prevents snow from entering the overshoe. The article may also be used over the knees by placing the same with the body portions of the article at the knees and the cuifs above and below the knees. Also the article may be used as a Wristlet.

The advantages of the invention are manifest. The article can be constructed at a nominal expense and by machinery readily available for the purpose. The article is extremely warm and prevents snow from entering the overshoe of the user.

Changes in the specific form of the invention, as herein described, may be made within the scope of What is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.

Having described the invention, what is claimed as new and desired to be protected by Letters Patent is:

1. A legging comprising a piece of knitted tubular stock provided with spaced ribbed sections intermediate the ends thereof and expanded sections at the ends of and between the ribbed sections, the ribbed sections having folds intermediate the ends thereof to form from the piece of stock between said folds a shell, with the intermediate expanded section constituting a body for the shell and the adjoining portions of the ribbed sections constituting cuffs for the shell, the portions of the piece of stock outwardly of said folds extending inwardly into the shell and forming a liner for the shell, the outer portions of the ribbed sections of the piece of stock underlying the cuffs of the shell and constituting cuffs for the liner and the expanded end sections of the piece of stock underlying the body of the shell and constituting body portions for the liner and means for maintaining the liner within the shell.

2. A legging comprising a piece of knitted tubular stock provided with spaced ribbed sections intermediate the ends thereof and expanded sections at the ends of and between the ribbed sections, the ribbed sections having folds intermediate the ends thereof to form from the piece of stock between said folds a shell, with the intermediate expanded section constituting a body for the shell and the adjoining portions of the ribbed sections constituting cuffs for the shell, the portions of the piece of stock outwardly of said folds extending inwardly into the shell and forming a liner for the shell, the outer portions of the ribbed sections of the piece of stock underlying the cuffs of the shell and constituting cuffs for the liner and the expanded end sections of the piece of stock underlying the body of the shell and constituting body portions for the liner and a seam connecting the ends of end sections together.

3. A legging comprising a piece of knitted tubular stock provided with spaced ribbed sections intermediate the ends thereof and cardigan sections at the ends of and between the ribbed sections, the ribbed sections having folds intermediate the ends thereof to form from the piece of stock between said folds a shell, with the intermediate cardigan section constituting a body for the shell and the adjoining portions of the ribbed sections constituting cuffs for the shell, the portions of the piece of stock outwardly of said folds extending inwardly into the shell and forming a liner for the shell, the outer portions of the ribbed sections of the piece of stock underlying the cuffs of the shell and constituting cuffs for the liner and the cardigan end sections of the piece of stock un- '4 derlying the body of the shell and constituting body portions for the liner and means for maintaining the liner within the shell.

4. A legging comprising a piece of knitted tubular stock provided with spaced ribbed sections intermediate the ends thereof and cardigan sections at the ends of and between the ribbed sections, the ribbed sections having 'folds intermediate the ends thereof to form from the piece of stock between said folds a shell, with the intermediate cardigan section constituting a body for the shell and the adjoining portions of the ribbed sections constituting cuffs for the shell, the portions of the piece of stock outwardly of said folds extending inwardly into the shell and forming a liner for the shell, the outer portions at the ends of and between the ribbed sections, the end sections being of substantially equal length and of substantially one-half the length of the intermediate section, the ribbed sections having folds substantially at the centers thereof to form from the piece of stock between said folds a shell, with the intermediate expanded section constituting a body for the shell and the adjoining portions of the ribbed sections constituting cuffs for the shell,

the portions of the piece of stock outwardly of said folds extending inwardly into the shell and forming a liner for the shell, the outer portions of the ribbed sections of the piece of stock underlying the cuffs of the shell and constituting cuifs for the liner and the expanded end sections of the piece of stock underlying the body of the shell and constituting body portions for the liner and the outer edges of the end sections meeting and a seam connecting the ends of end sections together.
