BOILER AND STEAM COOKER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 284,729, dated September 11, 1883.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, JOHN C. EDWARD and JOHN G. BIssE'r, of Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have in vented new anduseful Improvements in Boilers and Steam Cookers; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in the construction of culinary vessels, such as are usually employed for boiling and steaming food, by means of which all the odors and steam generated in such process are prevented from escaping into the apartment where the process is being conducted, and brings such odors within the draft force of the fire in the stove or range upon which the process is being carried on.
The invention consists in the peculiar construction of parts and their combinations, as more fully hereinafter described.
Figure 1 is an elevation of a boiler surmounted by a steam cooker, with a portion of the shell broken out. Fig. 2 is a vertical central section.
In the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, A represents the boiler, provided with a sunk bottom, B, which is designed to enter the boiler-hole of the stove in the usual manner, such sunk bottom being below the bottom, 0, proper of the boiler, which rests, when the device is in use, upon the top plate of the stove.
D is a conduit arranged inside and extending from near the top of the boiler down the entire length of the same, and opens through the bottom proper of the boiler, and, when the device is in use, into the combustion-chamber of the stove.
The cover E is of the usual construction, and when in place on the device in use the odors and steam arising from the cooking impinge against the cover, and, as they expand by heat, seek an outlet, which is only afforded them through the conduit, and the draft being once established, there is no escape of them into the room.
F is a steamer of the usual construction, designed to fit into a recess upon the top of the boiler, the cover of said boiler being removed for the purpose. This steamer is providedwith a conduit, G, upon its inner wall, and projects below the bottom of the steamer, so that when such steamer is in use upon theboiler the lower end of such conduit enters the conduit of the boiler. The conduit of the steamer extends to the top thereof, and at its top is cut away slightly from its connection with the wall of the steamer, to allow the flange of the cover which has been removed fromthe boiler to be placed thereon. The same results are had in the disposition of the odors and steam as in the use of the boiler. As many of these steamers as may be desired, similarly constructed, may be placed one above the other, and all brought into use at the same time, the odors of each being disposed of by its own conduit leading into the conduits of those below, and thence into the conduit of the boiler.
We are aware that boilers and steam cookers have been provided with means for dis posing of the odors and steam, and do not broadly claim such invention.
lVe are also aware that boilers and steam cookers have been made with conduits arranged on the outside, and also that it has been proposed to construct a vessel with a plate secured thereto by means of flanges, so as to form a flue inside of the vessel; but such constructions are not sought to be covered in this application.
What we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The cylindrical boiler A, having its body formed with tight joints, and provided with a water-tight conduit open at the top, inclosed within said body, and joined to a bottom having an aperture for the passage of thesteain,
substantially as described.
2. The combination, with the cylindrical boiler A, having sunken bottom B and internal conduit, D,-open at the top, as described, of one or more steamers, F, each provided with an internal conduit constructed and arranged to communicate with the conduit of the boiler, whereby an'ordinary cover can be used to fit either the steamer or the boiler, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
