I UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
oHnIsrIAN GRAFF, on UPPER sr. CLAIR, PENNSYLVANIA.
. LOCK FOR MILK-CANS.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent 284,412,dated September 4, 1883.
Application filed June 26, 1883. (No model.)
- To all whom it'ma/y concern.-
Be it known that I, OHRIsrIAN GRAFF, a citizen of the United States, residing at Upper St. Clair, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Looks for Milk-Cans, &c., of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to the construction of locks, and especially such locks which are used for securing the lids of milk-cans during transportation from the farmer to the dealer.
The object of my invention is to produce a lock which is simple in its construction and operation without being unsafe, and which is entirely independent of the can-lid, thus leaving the lid plain or free of incumbrances, to
which end it consists in the novel constructo a can.
tion and arrangement of parts hereinafter described, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is aface view of the lock applied Fig. 2 is an end view thereof.. Fig. 3 is a sectional front view on a larger scale than in the previous figures. Fig. 4is an end view on a similar scale to Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a cross-section on the line as m, Fig. '3.
Similar letters indicate corresponding parts.
The letterA designates the lock-case, which is permanently secured to the can-body B in proper relation to its lid 0. In this case A is arranged a bolt, "D, which projects through and beyond the case at one end, where it is provided with a laterally-projecting hook, E,
and with a head, F, 'of square or polygonal shape, the latter being at the inner end of the hook. On the inner portion 'of 'the bolt D is coiled a spring, G, which acts thereon with a tendencyto impel or force it outward from the lock-case, while in the bolt is formed a recess, H, adapted to receive a tumbler, I. This tumbler I is provided with a lockingspring, J, and is arranged to be retracted by a dog, K, which is operated by a suitable key,
or which may form the bit of the key. On the I the bolt-head F to clear the socket L. The
bolt I) is then turned in the proper direction to cause its hook E to catch over the edge of the can-lid, when it is forced inward against the action of. the spring G until the tumbler reengages the bolt. In this manner the bolthead F is brought into the socket L, and, due
to the shape of the head and socket, the bolt is thereby effectually prevented from turning,
while by the tumbler the bolt is firmly held against longitudinal movement, and hence the hook is properlylocked.
It is evident that my lock can be applied to other vessels besides milk-cans.
I What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- The bolt having one end provided with a laterallyrprojecting hook and with a square or polygonal head, in combination. with the lock case having a socket to receive the bolt-head, the bolt-impelling spring, and the tumbler adapted to engage the bolt, substantially as and for the purpose described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
a I CHRIST Witnesses:
LoUIs'HIRson,
I. HIRsoH.
