Be it known that I, GUsTAv I-I. MOLL, of the city of St. Louis, State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Umbrellas, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

The object of my invention is to provide certain new and useful improvements in umbrellas, whereby the same can be locked so that they cannot be opened except by the owner or possessor of a itting handle.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specication, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.

Figure l is a longitudinal sectional elevation of theV upper part of an umbrella provided with my improvements, the handle being held on the stick. Fig. 2 is a like view, showing the handle removed. Fig. 3 isa perspective view of the latch-plate. Fig. 4 is a longitudinal sectional elevation ol' the upper part of an umbrella, showing a modied con struction of my improved locking device.

rlhe umbrella-stick A is providedin its lower end with a longitudinal aperture, A, adapted to receive the spindle B at the upper end of the removable handle C. The stick is provided with a longitudinal slot, D, over which a strip, E, is secured on the outer surface of the stick, which strip is provided 'with jaws F, projecting into the slot, in which jaws a lever, G, is pivoted, which is provided at its upper end with a bend, hook, head, or prong, H, which projects outward, and is adapted to pass through that end of the slot D which is nearest the end of the stick and is not covered by the strip E. A spring, J, secured to the inner surface of the strip E and within the slot D, presses the lower part of the lever G inward. rIhe cup K, for confining the ends of the ribs together, is held to slide on a ferrule, L, on the lower end of the stick A, and is provided with an annular groove, M, or with an aperture, notch, or

recess for receiving the upper end of the lever the runner T is provided with an aperture, U, into which the upper end of the latch H snaps when mthe handle is withdrawn, thereby locking the ribs when the umbrella is closed, if operating the same as described above in relationto the cup. j

The device operates as follows: If the cup K is pressed down over the ends of the ribs N, and the handle C is removed, and the spindle B withdrawn, the spring J presses the lower end of the lever G inward and the upper end of the said leveroutward:7 so that it enters the groove M and holds the cup K. in place, preventing removal of the same. The umbrellaI is then ofno use whatever to any person not in possession of the handle, as it cannot be held and cannot be opened, as the ribs are held together by the locked cup K. As soon as the handlespindle B is pushed back into the aperture A', the lower end of the lever G is pressed outward, the upper end inward and out ofthe groove M, and thereby the cup K is released and can-be raised to release the ends of the ribs N. The handles can be so constructed that they will only fit the proper umbrella, and no other handle will fit the aperture in the stick of the said umbrella. n

I am aware that it is not new to combine a staff with a spring having double catches, a runner with double slots and a cap, or to combine an inner tube with a removable han dle; but

What I do claim as new and of my invention' isl. The combination, with the lever G, sup= ported on a spring, D, at one end, ofthe uma brella-stick A, having a perforation extending beyond said lever, and the spindle B, movable in said perforation, whereby the lever may be vibrated against the resistance of the spring, as described.

2. The combination, with the lever G, supported atI one end on a spring, J, and provided at the other with a bent end, H, of the stick A, having slot D, the strip E, having jaws F F, and the cup K, having the groove M, as and for the purpose specied.
