The present invention relates to'a linger nailf mask and it particularly relates to a device which will enable women to decorate and treat their finger nails `without affecting the skin or. cuticle and without unnecessary spattering or deposition-'of the treating. agent.

InV present cosmetic applications, itv is desirable to apply varioustypes of nail polishesr orother type of .cosmetics to the finger nails-r by means of a spray. However, such sprays are ditiicult to control and frequently result in deposition of the cosmetic agent upon the fingers away from the nails and arey not restricted. to application: to i the nails.

Furthermore, itv is. not readily possible for a. woman to apply masking tissues or tapes to.- each nail` to achieve a predetermined deposition pattern. Y

It is among the objects of the present invention to provide a simple, durable readily employedv mask. arrangement which.r may be readily fitted to the finger nails and which. will permit spray application; off. nail polish or other cosmetic liquids to the nailsl with assurance that. a predetermined pattern will-be formedand withouty the need of maskingl tapes or separate masking shields. l Y

Another object isfto provide a. novel fingernail mask of small. space consumption whichv wil1-. be light. and compact for use in the. toilet or for being carried-1 around in a ladys purse, which will.- provide-adequate means to enable various sizes and shapesvofiinger. nails.-to= be readily coated with-v finger nailpolish-hyy ai liquid pres:- sure spray or even by painting methods with assurance that a predetermined configuration is obtained and without deposition-'of the nail-l polishtupon- .thev unwanted places.

Still furtherobject andadvantages will appear in the more detailed description set forthfbelow, it being understood, however, that this moredetailed description is given by way of illustration. and vexplanation only and not by way of limitation, since various, changesthcrein may be: made by those skilled inthe art withoutdeparting from the scope and spirit of the'presentiinvention.

In accomplishing the above objects, it has been found most satisfactory, according to one embodiment of the present invention, to provide a plate member of circular, ovular or polygonal outline which will have arranged desirably radial thereon a plurality of openings corresponding to a wide assortment of linger nail shapes and sizes which will be sutlicient to accommodate those of an average woman.

Desirably, this plate is provided with a standard or support member which will enable the finger to be pressed into the opening and held in position during the coating or spraying operation.

The openings in the upper plate or mask element should be so arranged that they will resiliently press against the finger and so that their edges will tend to press the cuticle aside and permit a clean pattern of polish or application to be achieved.

bottom plate consisting of a support for the nger tips with the upper plate having spaced openings therein. The two plates are connected by a resilient spring or'rubber. mask member which give the necessary spacing and resiliency.

The plates may be made of plastic, glass, wood, but polyethylene is preferred.

These plates should be resistant to the organic solvents which are found in lacquer nail sprays or in other liquid applications for nails. -The trays or plates may be triangular, square, hexagonal or octagonal or they may be scalloped.

From five to twenty openings may be provided.

Withfthe foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists of the novel construction, combinationand arrangement of parts as hereinafter more specically described, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein is shown an embodiment of the invention, but iti is to be understood that changes, variations and modifications can. be resortedV to which fall withnthe scope of thevclaims hereunto appended.

Referring' to- Figs. l and 2 and 3, therey is provided an upper mask plate A and a lower support plate B which are connected together by the resilient mass C and the bolt. connection D. Y

The connection C may consist of ay coil spring' or the upper and lower plates may have telescoping extensions setting in one. another to give a predetermined arrangement.

The top plate is provided with a series of linger nail shaped openings. E of various sizes with lower edges F serving ytolpress4 away the cuticle and enabling a clean pattern to-.be formed on the finger nail.

The lower plate. B has a series of supports G which may be arranged continuously as a band around the device which Awill assure the'correct positionment of the fingernail` in respect to the vari-size openings' E.

Referring specifically to the structure as shown, the platev A although it may be of various shapes and sizes, is shown as, having ascalloped` edgel withthe recesses 1.0'- and the projections 11. The edges of the. yplate, A are dished inwardly as indicated at 12 so that the outer Vendl 13 of the' openings E will be atal low pointl adjacent tothe base. of the nail while the inner end 14, will be at. ahigher point. adjacent the endf of the nail.

Thelower periphery of the dished portion `around the openings E will have a downwardly projecting edge F which will tend to press away the cuticle on the linger H and enable a sharp pattern of nail polish to be attained.

The central part of the plate A is of increased thickness as indicated at 15 and it has an opening 16 yreceiving the shank 17 of the bolt D.

Encircling the bolt 17 is a resilient pad 18 forming the resilient connection.

The pad 18 iits in the shoulders 19 in the upper plate A and in the shoulder 20 in the Vlower plate B so that a firm connection is maintained between these plates while permitting a slight movement toward and away from one another as indicated by the arrows I and K. The lower plate has a central enlarged portion 21 with a domed section 22. The outer edge forming a series of scallops 23 which contact the table or base L.

Molded integrally with the blade B are a series of ceive the tip` of the finger and elevated end portions 25 .which serve to jam the finger up against the edges F of the openings E. A In use, when the finger H is inserted `from-thte lefty as shown in Fig. 2, the nail will be held tightlyor pressed up againstthe opening E with the edges -F pressing aside the cuticle. At the same time the slope at 25 will press the finger nail against the openingE giving Yitf-a firm support with the `two plates being rocked apart as indicated by double arrow J. lThis movement will be resisted by theresilient connection'C so that the finger will be heldfirmly `in position.` A

When this occurs, the spray or otherapplicator may be utilized with assurance that a clean outlineY will ,be formed and that the enamel material will not be'applied to the skin or other portions of the finger tip. f

As many openings E may be p rovided as are necessary addition willalso serve as a seal in casethe plastic material is flexible and soft. This will prevent the nail lacquer or spray coating from spreading.

The plastic material` will, of course, resist softening or attack bythe lacquer solvent.

It is thus apparent that the applicant has provided a lnovel finger nailmask that may be utilized by women in the application of nail polish which is unobtrusive, of light weight, will accommodate itself to a wide variety of finger shapes and sizes of theV finger nails and which may easily be carried about the person or in the handbag. Y

The embodiment of my invention shown and described herein is to be considered merely as illustrative, as my invention is susceptible to variation, `modification and change within the spirit and scope of the appended claims.

Having now particularly described and ascertained the nature of the invention, and in what manner thegsame is to beperformed,.what is claimed is:

l. A finger nail mask having an upper plate with a plurality of spaced openings to form masks for the finger nails, and a lower plate to support the fingers against said openings, resilient cushioning means positioned between the central portions of the plate and a connection between said plates extending through the cushioning means and compressing, said cushioning means between the plates, said lower plate being centrally dished upwardly and `the upper ,plate beingY provided with a circular series ofvhollows formed in a border arrangement in which said hollows the vspaced openings are respectively located and the` lower plate having a plurality of pads to support the fingers' against said openings.

A finger nail mask having an upper plate with a plurality of spaced openings to form masks for the finger nails, and a lower plate to `support the fingers against said openings, resilient'cushioning means positioned between the centralportions of the plate and a connection between said plates extending through the cushioning means and compressing said cushioning meansbetween the plates, said lower plate having a plurality of recessed pads to hold the finger nails against said openings.

A finger nail mask having an upper plate with a plurality of spaced openings to form masks for the finger nails, and a lower plate to vsupport the fingers against said openings, resilient cushioning means positioned between the central portions of the plate and a connection between said plates extending through the cushioning means and compressing said cushioning means between the plates, said connection being provided with a resilient means to permit the plates to rock toward and away from one another. 6. A fingernail mask comprising an upper rigid circular mask plate having a circular arrangement of fingernail- Yshaped openings and with the-plate having a downwardly projecting peripheral lip around each opening and with said openings respectively positioned ina circular series of hollows so that each opening and its lip is positioned below the main body of the mask plate and a base plate having hollowed pads positioned below each opening to support a finger forced inwardly under the upper plate.

7. The mask of claim 6, said upper and base plates being .spaced apart by a central resilient spacer and an adjustable central connection between the plates to adjust the spacing therebetween by compression of the resilient spacer.
