' 2 Claims. (Cl. 4-37 WATER 'This invention relates to water flush toilets and more particularly to ball dump valves therefor.
It is the principal object of the present invention to provide a selective double or dual dump valve assembly for water flush toilets in which the user of the toilet can Patented June 24, 1958 of the tank is a double dump valve' drain pipe assembly 14 embodying the features of the present invention.
In rear of the handle lever 13 and within the tank is a ball float water inlet valve device 15 having a ball float 16 which when lowered to release water item the flush tank opens the inlet valve to refill the tank with water. position shown in Fig. 5 the water inlet flow will be shut off. Any overflow water beyond this position may leave the flush tank through a hole 17 in the ball dump valve drain pipe assembly.
As shown more clearly in Figs. 1 and 2, the drain pipe assembly comprises a lower valve seat pipe section 18 having lower and upper valve seat pipe branches 19 and 20 angled with one another to less than one hundred and eighty degrees. The valve seat pipe branch 19 has a valve seat 21 thereon with which a dump ball valve 22 dump valve assembly for water flush toilets a support on 7 the drain pipe of the dump valve mechanism that has the lever partslie outside the drain pipe so as to eliminate as far as possible the dropping of any parts that might work loose into the drain pipe.
It is still another object of the invention to provide in a dual dump valve arrangement for flush toilets elevated drain valve seats that are angled less than one hundred and eighty degrees from one another to make for compactness and to adapt the leverage mechanism for support on the drain pipe outside the upper end thereof.
It is a further object of the invention to provide a simplified lever mechanism for operating the dump valve of a dual ball dump assembly which has parts that cannot be easily detached from one another or replaced.
Other objects of the invention are to provide a selective flush toilet double dump valve assembly which can be easily installed or maintained in the flush toilet tank, inexpensive to manufacture, has a minimum number of parts, easy to assemble, compact, conservative of space, effective and efficient in use.
For a better understanding of the invention, reference may be had to the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a vertical elevational view of the drain pipe with the double dump valve assembly of the present invention mounted thereon, with portions broken away to show the interior construction thereof,

This application is related to my copending application, Serial No. 652,564 filed April 12, 1957 and entitled Water Flush Toilet Ball Dump Valve Assembly.
Referring now particularly to Fig. 5 of the drawings, there is shown a flush toilet tank 10 having a bottom 11 and a top cover 12. The front wall of the tank has a handle lever 13 pivoted thereon which can be turned either in one direction or the other. Within the center seats. The upper valve seat pipe branch 21 has an upwardly-extending threaded extension 23 on which a valve seat can be adjusted to different water elevations within the tank. The lower end of the valve seat pipe section 18 has threads 25 and a flange 26 that rests'on the bottom 11 "of the tank.
The upper end of the pipe section 18 has a reduced diameter fitting 27 thereon into which a reduced diameter pipe 28 is threaded. This pipe has the drain hole 17 'near its upper end. This pipe section can be lifted from the section 18 in the manner illustrated in Fig. 2 by simply turning the pipe out of its threaded connection with the reduced diameter fitting 27.
On the lower end of the pipe section 28 there is secured a clarnp'bracket 29 having a fixed guide sleeve 30 through which a stem 31 of the valve 23 slides and is guided to maintain the ball valve 23 in alignment with its seat 21 upon being lifted therefrom.
A similar bracket 32 having a fixed sleeve 33 is provided at the upper end of the pipe section 28 just above the drain hole 17. A ball valve 34 normally rests upon the adjustable sleeve 24 but when lifted therefrom is maintained in alignment therewith by its stem 35 and the sleeve 33 through which the stem slides. 7 On the upper end of the pipe section 28 above the bracket 32 is fixed a split bracket'36 having clamp screws 37 and 38 and a forward extension 39 to which there is fixed a pair of spaced parallel lever supporting plate portions 40 and Hand a bottom portion 42 having stop projections 43 and 44 on which respective levers 45 and 46 may rest. Lever 45 has a pivot sleeve 47 through which a pivot pin 48 extends to pivotally secure the lever between the parallel plate portions 40 and 41. The other end of the lever 45 is connected by a link 49 to the enlarged upper end of valve stem 35 of the valve 34.
The lever 46 has a pivot sleeve 50 through which a pivot pin 51 extends to pivotally secure the lever between the parallel plate portions. Depending from the outer end of the lever 46 is a lifting link 52 that connects with the enlarged upper end of the valve stem 31 of the valve The operating device for these levers includes a shaft 53 that is joined in the spaced plate portions 40 and 41 above the levers 45 and 46 and centrally thereof and an arcuate-shape work member 54 secured to the underside of the shaft 53 by fastening screw 55 and respectively having its ends slidably engaging with the short inner ends of the levers 45 and 46 so that upon the shaft 53 being turned one way or the other, either the valve 23 or the valve 34 can be liftedf On the outer end of the shaft there is fixed an operating arm 56 that is connected by a link 57 with the hand lever 13 on an arm 58 lying within the tank and by cotter pins 59 and 60 which allow for some play of the handle arm 58 upon the linkv 57.
In use, the handle lever 13 is turned clockwise to lift As soon as the ball float has been lifted to the the ball valve 23 and to allow the larger volume of water to drain from the tank so that maidmum flushing of the toilet bowl is effected. If a less amount of water from the tankis suificient to flush the contents of the toilet bowl therefrom and to etfecta saving of the water, the handle lever 13 is turned in acounterclockwise manner so that the lever 45 and the ball valve' 34 are lifted. This allows the water to be drained down to the upper edge of the adjustable valve seat 24 from its upper level thus half the volume of Water that would ordinarily be used on the regular flushing of the tank would be saved.
It should now be apparent that there has now been provided a simplified form of a double ball valve 'du'rnp toa minimum and these parts located wholly externally of the upper end of the drain pipe and the ball valve seats angled for less than one hundred and eighty degres from each other to make for compactness and to conserve space within the tank.
While various changes may be made in the detail construction, it shall be understood that such changes shall be within the spirit and scope of the present invention as defined by the appended claims.
What is claimed is:
1. A selective dual ball dump valve assembly for water flush toilets comprising a central drain pipe having laterally extending valve seat branch pipes located at different elevations thereupon and angled less than one hundred and eighty degrees with respect to each other, said branch pipes having top valve seats, ball valves respectively overlying said valve seats and respectively having valve stems,
