SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 283,853, dated August 28, 1883. Application filed July 3, 1882. Renewed July 1883. (ModeL) To all whom it'may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM BRADWAY BLAOKHALL, of the city of Toronto, in the county of York, in the Province of Ontario,

5 Canada, (bookbinder,) have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Removable Book-Covers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same.

My invention relates chiefly to that class of books which are carried in the pocket as memorandum books or used on the counter as check-books, but is applicable to books of a larger size by using two or more holders in one book, instead of one holder which is sufficient for the ordinary-sized book for the pocket or the counter.

The object of my invention is to produce a book that will be. suitable for such purposes, as hereinbefore referred to, and be produced at a cost that will place it within the reach of many who would not otherwise use such books.

It consists in constructing the book and the cover entirely separate and distinct from each other, the cover being complete in itself as a cover and the-book complete in itself as a book. The cover is made with the view of wearing out quite a number of books, the mode of binding the book and of securing the book to the cover being the chief feature of my invention, which I will now proceed to describe.

I take a piece of suitable metallic plate and make it of a proper form for entering freely into a sheath prepared therefor in the inside of the lower cover, as hereinafter more particularly described, which metallic plate I call a holder, and construct the same with two arms, which pass through the stub of the book, and are clinched on the upper side, thereby thoroughly securing the holder to the book, and also binding the same, and which holder being also constructed with a prong on the lower end, so that, when the holder is pushed down, the sheath passes out of the sheath through an orifice prepared therefor, and is folded back over the edge of the orifice,

and, forming a clinch, prevents the book be ing removed from the cover until the prong is straightened,when, by drawing the holder out of the sheath, the prong retires inside the said sheath and allows the holder to be withdrawn from the same. By means of the clinched prong the book is more thoroughly secured to the cover, and is in every way equal to more eXpensively-bound books.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective planview of my book, with its cover A lying open and flat upon its back, and the book B laid upon the same, and showing the metallic arms d (l clinched upon the stub B.
