1 Claim. (Cl. 281-17) This invention relates to a binder and particularly to a binder for displaying leaves attached to the` inside thereof with the leaves swingable about a plurality of spaced apart axes.

The need has arisen for a binder which permits the mounting of leaves therein in such fashionthat the leaves may be swung around spaced apart and oftentimes angularly related axes for interleaving in a number ,of diierent fashions whereby the leaves may be displayed in such interleaved manner as to promote the sale of certain goods with respect to which the leaves pertain..

One such use is in displaying to prospective automobile purchasers the various color combinations for automobiles and for this purpose one of the leaves of the binder is made of a transparent material showing the outline of the automobile body, and other of the leaves show various colors which, when placed beneath the transparent leaf, will indicate the appearance of an automobile having the colors of the leaves selected.

The primary object of the invention is the provision of a binder in which leaves may be connected for display purposes when the binder is open and enclosed and protected within the binder when the same is closed, with the leaves being so connected to the binder that they may be swung about spaced apart axes and thereby permit interleaving of the leaves in a number of diierent sequences and combinations.

Another object of the invention is the provision in a binder of a plurality of rectilinearly lextending arms swingably connected to the inside surface of the binder to which leaves may be connected for interleaving purposes.

Other objects, advantages, and meritorious features will more fully appear from the specification, claim, and accompanying drawings, wherein:

In the embodiment ofthe invention shown in the drawings, the binder includes a cover 10 having a pair of hingedly connected flap portions 12 and 14 which are swingably connected along the edges 16 and 18 by a back portion 19. The swingable or hinged connection between the back 19 and the flaps 12 and 14 may be accomplished in any conventional manner and need not be described. The back and ap portions may be formed of cardboard or some other fairly rigid lightweight material suitably covering material and in Figs. 2 and 4 the cardboard or the like is indicated at 20 while a suitable covering material is indicated at 22. The iiaps 12 and 14 are swingable at the edges 16 and 18 from the open position shown in Fig. 1 to a closed position wherein the aps are disposed in opposing relation and the inside surface of the binder is concealed.

Secured to the inside surface of the cover are a plurality of rectilinearly extending leaf-supporting arms. In Fig. 1 I have shown four such arms though a greater or lesser number may be provided as desired. The arms are indicated at 24, 26, 28, and 30. The arm 28 shown in detail in Fig. 2 is representative of each of the arms. It is threaded as at 30 at its outer end and an internally threaded retaining element 32 is threaded over the end of the arm to hold one or more leaves in place on the arm. The leaves, only one of which is shown at 33 in conjunction with arm 30 may be provided with a spiral wire 35 received over the arm and held thereon by retainingelement 32. Any other manner of fasteningthe articles or leaves to the arms may be` provided and the aforementioned spiral connection is merely illustrative. The leaves are swingable about the arms. The retaining element 32 may be of a greater cross sectional dimension as desired in order to retain leaves on the arms.

The end of each arm opposite the end provided with the retaining element 32 is ared out and flattened to provide a boss such as the boss 34 of arm 28. The boss is provided with an aperture 36 therethrough. The boss is received within a slot 38 formed in a knob 40 or armsupporting member which is affixed to the inside surface of the cover. A. pin or the like 42 extends through the aperture 36 in boss 34 and through provided aperture 44 in the knob to swingably retain the arm in the knob.

The knob is shaped as shown in Figs. 2 and 4 and is provided with a base portion 46 which bears against the inside of the cover. Any suitable fastening means may be provided for securing the knob to the cover. I have shown a preferred form of fastener which comprises a T- shaped screw having a head portion 48 and a threaded shank portion 50. The cover, at lthe location at which the knob is to be secured, is provided with a slot 52 and the head 48 of the T-shaped screw is introduced through the slot such that the shank or stem 50 extends outwardly of the slot, and then the head 48 is turned such that it extends transversely of the slot and the knob 40 is then threaded down on the stem 50. The knob is provided with a threaded bore in its underside which receives the threaded stem 50. In order to prevent loosening or rotation of the T-shaped screw, the ends of the head 48 may be provided with prongs 54 which dig into the cardboard 20.

In order to hold the arms iiat against the inside surface of the cover, snap-retaining means may be provided. In Fig. 1 I have shown such snap-retaining means at 56 for holding arm 24 against ilap 12. While only one such snap retainer is shown, others may be provided as desired. The retainer comprises a knob 60 of the same general configuration as the knob 40. The knob 60 is provided with a slot 62 having therein oppositely disposed concavities within and between which the arm 24 is releasably grippingly received. The knob 60 may be formed of metal or plastic having su'icient exibility and resiliency such that the arm 24 may be pushed down through the slot 62 to be gripped by the oppositely disposed concave surfaces of slot 62. The concave surfaces are indicated at 64.

The arms may be swung in planes perpendicular to the inside surface of the cover about the pins 42. It will be noted that some of them may be swung in angularly related planes, i. e., arm 28 may be swung in a guiarly related to the plane of swinging movement of arm 30, which swings in a plane parallel to the righthand edge of the cover, Arms 28 and 26 swing in parallel planes and are attached to back portion 19 of the cover. Arms 24 and 30 swing in parallel planes and `are attached to the flaps. The arms may be all attacledto the Iiaps, or differently arranged, if desired, and the relationship shown in Fig. l is merely illustrative of one arrangement. The arms may also extend onlyl halfway across `the width of the flaps. If desired the'armsmay also be swung about the axesof the T-shaped screws, i. e., about the axis ,of the threaded shank 50 of each knob assembly. Such latter swingable movement is accompanied'by a partial unthreadingof the knob 40 upon the threaded shank 50.

It is apparent that -With one or more leaves attached to each of the arms for swingable movement about the arms, theleaves may be interleaved in any number of desired Ways. With the arms 26 and 28, leaves mounted thereon may be swung from positions covering one ap to positionscovering the other flap. Leaves mounted on the arms 24 and 30 may be swung from positions covering the aps to `positions outwardly of the cover. The leaves may also be swung with the arms during swinging of the arms to facilitate the interleaving of theleaves.

What I claim is:

A binder for the purpose described comprising `a cover` h'ving side edges and end edges and including a pair of hingedly connected flaps, a plurality of pad mounting 'means connected to the inside of the cover along said side edges and said end edges; each pad mounting means comprising a knob rotatablymounted on said cover for rotational movement about an axis perpendicular to the inside of the cover, an arm extending through the pad and having one end rotatably mounted on said knob for rotational movement about an axis parallel to the surface of the inside of the cover, and snap retaining means mounted von the inside of said cover at a position spaced from said knob to releasably retain the other end of said arm in position onfsaid cover; `at least one of the knobs of said plurality of pad mounting means beingmounted on the'cov'er'at a side edge of the cover substantially midway between they end edges' to enable utilization of the leaves of the pad on the arm extending from said one of the knobs with leaves of pads at each of said flaps.
