Description
April 29, 1958 R. P. vu n l EMl-:NoT
DISPLAY BOX Filed Aug. 19, 1957 United States Patent 2,832,465 DISPLAY BOX Robert P. .Vuillemeno Oradel, N. J., assigner to Maiden Form Brassiere Co., Inc., New York, N. Y., a corporation of New York Application August 19, 1957, Serial No. 678,739 2 Claims. (Cl. 206.-7)
This invention relates to boxes constructed of two connected members, customarily of cardboard and connected at a hinged end for folding into open and closed positions, the characteristic of the present box consisting of the use of an internal display sheet or panel which forms at one end a latching element adapted to 'interengage a specially formed latching wall at an end of one of the two box members.
The invention will be described with reference to the accompanying drawing, in which:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view, showing the box open, and the display panel, which will receive an article of apparel, for display, brought into View.
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary section, taken on the line 2-2, Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary section, taken on the line 3--3, Fig. l.
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary View, partly broken away, showing the two front end sections of the box ready for latching.
Fig. 5 is a fragmentary view partly broken away, showing the two front end sections of the box, latched.
Referring to the drawing, I have shown a box which may be formed of a single sheet of cardboard or other suitable material and consisting of two like halves or members having major face walls 1, side walls 2 and front walls 3, 3X. As shown in Figs. 4 and 5 the last named walls preferably are inwardly inclined. The two box halves are connected at the back by a hinge line, or two scored hinged lines, as desired. These hinged lines were not shown in the drawing but are so customary as to be well understood in the art.
Within the box is a foldable display panel consisting of a back wall 4 and a front wall 5, both walls being scored at 6, so as to fold on said score lines in the opening and closing of the box. The walls 4 and 5 may be integral and hence joined only by top fold lines provided by scores at each side of the scored fold line 6, or they may be separate walls suitably connected for a short distance at each side of the fold lines 6. In other words wall 5 is adapted for free movement upwardly for under-insertion of an article of apparel, such as a brassiere or girdle, for example, the outer areas of wall 5 serving as wings to be covered by part of the garment held for display.
As shown in Figs. 2 to 5, the end of wall 4 is folded to directly abut end wall 3X of one box section, and at the end of such section wall 4 is bent inwardly to provide a latching lip 4X. The opposite end of wall 4 of the display panel preferably abuts the wall 3 of the box. The said two abutting ends of the display panel wall 4, against the box ends, provides a satisfactory holding of the display panel within the box, so that it is unnecessary to provide additional holding means.
The end wall 3 of the box is provided with a slot at 3xx and inwardly of said slot, that is to say that area between the slot and the free edge of wall 3, is moved outwardly as indicated more particularly in Figs. 2 and 4.
Referring to Fig. 4, the two box sections or members are ready to be latched by relative movement toward each other. As lip 4x passes the outwardly deformed area of member 3 the lip will be slightly flexed, and then as the 2,832,465 Patented Apr. 29, 1958 movement is continued it will snap back into latching position against the edge of the outwardly deflected or deformed area of member 3 between the slot and the free edge of member 3, as shown in Fig. 5.
It will be understood that various modifications may be made in the form and arrangement of the elements shown in the illustrated embodiment, without departing from th.: spirit of the invention. Thus the box may be of any suitable size, depth and elongation. Also the lip 4X may be carried directly by end wall 3X, if desired.
It has been described that the area of front wall 3 will be slightly deformed outwardly between the slot 3Xx and the free edge of said wall. Of course the reverse serves the same purpose, inasmuch as wall 3 under the slot may be deformed inwardly so that the edge of the slot at its top will coact with lip 4X in latching. In fact there may actually be no deformation in either case except by the action of wall 3x in pressing inwardly, by its edge contact, wall 3 below the slot 3XX in closing the box, all of which will be understood by reference to Figs. 4 and 5. Therefore the claims are to be read with these factors applied i. e. that the said deformation of end wall 3 may be above or below the slot and that said deformation may be by the action of the edge of end wall 3x in its contact with wall 3 by the closing of the box.
Having described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by letters patent, is as follows:
1. A display box comprising two connected members and connected at a hinged end for folding into open and closed positions, each member having a major face wall, side walls and front wall, the walls of one member being adapted to overlap the walls of the second member, and latching means carried by the front walls of said box members and consisting of an inwardly directed lip at the outer margin of one front wall, a slot formed in the second end wall and an outwardly deformed area of said last named front wall intermediate said slot and the free edge of said wall, in combination with a display panel carried in the box and having one end edge abutting one front wall of the box, the opposite end of the panel being folded to provide an area substantially coextensive with the second front wall of the box, and at the edge of said last named and second end wall being folded inwardly to provide a latching lip, as and for the purpose described.
2. A display box comprising two connected members and connected at a hinged end for folding into open and closed positions, each member having a major face wall, side walls and front wall, the walls of one member being adapted to overlap the walls of the second member, and latching means carried by the front Walls of said box members and consisting of an inwardly directed lip at the outer margin of one front wall, a slot formed in the second end wall and an outwardly deformed area of said last named front wall intermediate said slot and the free edge of said wall, in combination with a display panel carried in the box and having one end edge abutting one front wall of the box, the opposite end of the panel being folded to provide an area substantially coextensive with the second front wall of the box, and at. the edge of said last named and second end wall being folded inwardly to provide a latching lip7 said panel hingedly carrying a wall foldable along its center line and at the hinge line of the two box sections and extending at the opposite sides of said hinge line as apparel holding wings.
