UNITED STATES ADAM HoLEMAN, Won EEoNsoN, EANsAs.
PATENT OFFICE.
vGATE-LATCH.
SPECIFICATION- forming part of ILetters Patent N0.,283,243, dated August 14, 1883.
Application filed January 19, 1883. (No model.) l
To all whom, t may concern Be it known that I, ADAM HOLEMAN, acitizen of the United Statesresidingat Bronson,
in the county of Bourbon and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gate-Latches, of which the following is a specification, reference being had thereintoA the accompanying drawings.
V My' inventionrelates toiinprovements in wire gates or the latches therefor; and it consists in the construction, combination, and arrange ment of the several parts, as will be hereinafter fully described, and specifically pointed out in theclaiin. Y A
`In the drawings, Figure l` is a side view of my gate. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the. gate latched, with dotted lines showing .the same' unlatched, and Fig. 3 is a,plan viewof thev gate when being fastened or unfastened, as will be described; Y
l The gateis composed o f the wires a and the bar a.
Z is the post. The wires a are securedat one end in any suitable manner to the said post, as sl1own,and their opposite ends are made fast to the bar a.
a2 is an eye or staple, secured to the bar a in position to be entered by the lever-latch,` hereinafter described. l
c is the butt-post, ,to and away from `which tliebar a swings in the operation of thedevice. c is a lug extended from the butt-post.
cl is the lever-latch, having itsY inner end 4 pivoted on the lug c', and swinging laterally,
as will be described. This lever is constructed so that its outer end may be passed through the staple a2, and is provided on what (for convenience of reference) I call its f outer left side,77 with a slot, d', arranged close to `its 'piv otal point, as shown. In the inner end of this slot I cutthe notch di, `while its outer end is beveled slightly, so that the staple will slide off easily when the lever-latch is turned to the right to rcleasethe same.
, In the operation of my invention, when it is desired to latch the gate, the bar a is swung in close to the butt-post, and the outer end of the leverflatch is passed through the staple a2, and the lever is then swung to the position shown' in Fig. 2, the staple falling into the slot and notch d2 therein, in which position it will be seen that all forceor strain on the gate will draw the fastening together, rather than `otherwise, the strain of the gate Vbeing exerted 011 the latch in rear of the pivotal point of the same.
It will be understood that instead of cutting the slot in the outer side of the lever a small projection could be formed thereon near the pivoted end and adapted to hold the staple.
' ends to the gate-bar, having the staple secured thereto, and then iiX the lever-latch on the postfromwhich the wire has been cut, and the gate is complete. y
Vhat I claim is;-
In combination with a gate for wire fences,
constructed as described, the latch consisting of the lever d, pivoted to the lug c of the post C, said lever being formed with a slot, d', and notch d2, adapted to receive thestaple c2 of the gate, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ADAM HOLEMAN.
