Description
1 UNITED STATES PAT NT OFFICE.
JOHN R. FARNUM, OF VVALTHAM, MASSACHUSETTS.
SCREEN ORGRID FoR GAS-PURIFIERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part ofiLetters Patent No. 283,090, dated. August 14, 1883. Application filed April 2, 1883. (No model.)
ful Improvement in Screens or Grids for use in Gas-Purifiers, of. which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to screens or grids to be employed in gas-purifiers to support the lime through which the gas is to pass to be purified; and it consists in bars and blocks between the bars, of the construction hereinafter specified, and their combination with rods for clamping, as hereinafter set-forth.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a plan viewof a screen or grid embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is aside viewand Fig. 3 an end View ofthe same. Fig. 4 is a-transverse section of bars and blocks.
The bars A, commonly of Wood, I prefer .to make of very nearly or quite the shape and proportions shown-namely, each having its upper edge face, a, wider than the lower edge face, I), each side presenting two inclined surfaces, 0 and (Z, of like angles of inclination,
but one surface, 0, wider than the other surface, 11. I Blocks B are placed between the barsA, each block having each of its two side faces to conform to the surfaces of the side of a bar. Each block, extending at equal distances above and below the line 0, at which the two inclined surfacesof a side of a bar meet, will have its upper and lower parts alike, and will be of the same thickness at its upper edge face, f,- as at its lower edge face, 9.
At the outside of each'outside bar halfblocks 0 are employed, each of which has a side to conform to the side of the bar, but has a plane face, h,.to meet a corresponding face of the half-block of an adjacent screen or grid. I I
Through the bars A, blocks B, and halfblocks 0 rods Dextend, which may be riveted at the ends, as shown. manyrows of blocks across the screen as desired, each having a rod, D, extending through the bars, blocks, and half-blocks, and riveted, as stated above. Thus the bars are held at the right distances apart and in true position,
and the bars and blocks are 'firmlyclamped together. The rows of blocks near the ends I There may be as may be placed so as to extend quite to the ends of the bars, if desired.
- .Screensor grids constructed as shown and described present no obstruction on their upper surfaces to cause annoyance inshoveling and removing the lime therefrom. While havingthe bars of sufficient depth for the required strength, the spaces between the bars at their .lower edges are wider than the spaces at their upper edges, which tends to facilitate the passage of the gas between the bars. 'The blocks are readily put in place, since each block has its upper and lower part alike, and hence eitherpart may be made the upper one. The blocks, being made with sides to fit the sides of the bars, formed as specified, act to support the bars about the holes made therein for the rods. i
Though I prefer the construction of the bars as specifically pointed out, yet the purposes of my invention could be gained and my invention be involved, as to the whole or a part, if the bars, formed so as to have sides of a rounded or oval shape, or to have any other suitable form, had, in combination therewith, blocks suitably formed to conform thereto and support the bars, as set forth.
I claim as my inve11tion- 1. In a screen or grid, the combination of the bars A, blocks B between the bars, and
.rods D, extending through the bars and blocks,
said bars tapering toward both their upper and lower edges or edge faces, and said blocks conforming to the sides of the bars, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a screen or grid, blocks B between the bars thereof, each thinner through the. middle than at the upper and lower edge riveted at their ends in said half-block's, substantially as specified.
- JOHN R. FARNUM.
