2 Claims. (Cl. 311-71) This invention relates to table slides and particularly to metallic telescoping guiding connections between relatively movable or slidable table top members for extensible tables wherein the table top members are fixed with relation to the legs, and the legs, casings, and table top members are relatively movable as units to adjust the length of the table by inserting an additional leaf in the table top.
The principal object of the present invention resides in the provision of a new and improved telescoping slidable connection as above described, the new slidable connectionbeing simple, inexpensive and easily applied and operated and comprising a cylindrical elongated tube or sleeve secured to the under side of one table top member and a corresponding and telescoping elongated rod secured to the under side of another table top member, the tube and rod being movable relatively to each other with the movement of the table top members which are guided by the telescoping connection; and the provision of a device as above described but including a third central and independent table top member which has secured thereto at the under side thereof a tubular member which telescopingly and slidably receives the sleeve at the same time that the sleeve telescopingly and slidably receives the rod, so that all three table top members are relatively movable and are guided by inter-telescoping sliding members whereby a pair of leaves may be inserted in the table top member, one at each side of the central member.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will appear hereinafter.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, in which Fig. 1 is a plan view of a table top, parts being broken away and illustrating the present invention;
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section on an enlarged scale of one of the telescoping connections, parts being broken away and omitted;
Fig. 3 is an enlarged section on line 3-3 of Fig. 2;
Fig. 4 is a plan view of a modified form of the invention, parts being broken away and in section;
Fig. 5 is an enlarged section on line 5 5 of Fig. 4; and
Fig. 6 is an enlarged section on line 6-6 of Fig. 5.
In carrying out the present invention, there is provided as shown in Fig. l a pair of table top members 10 and 12 each of which is provided with fixed legs which are herein indicated at 14, and fixed casing members 16.
To the under side of these table top members, there are attached plate members indicated at 18 and 20, these plates being secured by any desired or convenient means such as screws or the like, not shown.
The plate 18 has solidly secured thereto as for instance by welding as at 22 a cylindrical, elongated sleeve or tubular member 24 which is located parallel to the table length and in a direction to extend under the other table top portion 12 when the table members are brought tonited States APatent ICC .geth'er. There may be a pair of table slides used as is shown in Fig. l, and any convenient stop means may be utilized for stopping the motion of the table members 10 and 12 in a direction away from each other. In any event, it will be seen that the present construction is extremely simple and easily manufactured and yet is strong, sturdy and positive in its sliding and guiding functions to maintain the relative positions of the tables in a transverse direction while allowing separation thereof in the other direction to enlarge the table by providing for the admission of extra leaves.
Fig. 4 shows a modification of this invention in which table members 28 and 30 are similar to those at 10 and 12 but in this case there is provided an intermediate member 32 in the same plane. The legs (not shown) will be similar to those above described and have a fixed relation to the table top members 28 and 30.
Table top member 28 is provided with a plate or plates 34 to each of which is secured a tube 36, this construction being similar to plate 18 and tube 24 in Fig. 2; and table top 30 is provided with a plate or plates 38 to each of which is secured a rod 40, similar to the showing in Fig. 2 as at 20 and 26. The rods 40 are telescopically engaged in the tubings 36.
However, the central table top member 32 is provided with`a plate 42 which may be similar to plate 18 or 20 and to this plate there is secured as by welding or the like 44 a relatively large cylindrical sleeve 46 which sliding receives the tubing 36 while the tubing 36 at the same time slidingly receives the rod 40. ln this case also appropriate stops may be utilized to position the members in separated condition without allowing disengagement insofar as the guides are concerned.
It will be seen that the modification of Fig. 4 discloses a construction where there are provided multiple table top members all of which are telescopingly connected together by means of a central sleeve slidably receiving the tubing on an end table member, while the tubing receives the rod of the other end table member. The casings, legs and stop means may be provided as desired and do not limit the invention in any way.
Having thus described my invention and the advantages thereof, I do not wish to be limited to the details herein disclosed, otherwise than as set forth in the claims, but what l claim is:
l. Table slide structure for an extensible table top including a plurality of relatively slidable table top members, one of said table top members being centrally located between a pair of end table top members, a sleeve secured to said central top member at the under side and transversely thereof, a tube xedly secured to one of the end table top members in fixed relation thereto at the under side thereof, said tube being slidably received in said sleeve, a rod fixedly secured to the other of said end table top members and telescopingly received in said tube within the area of the sleeve, whereby the two end table top members are slidingly movable relative to the central member.
2. Table slide structure for an extensible table top including a plurality of relatively slidable table top members, one of said table top members being centrally located between a pair of end table top members, an .elongated cylindrical sleeve secured to said central top member at the under side thereof, said tube being slid- `ably received in said sleeve, an elongated cylindrical rod iixedly secured to the other of said end table top members and telescopingly received in said elongated tube within the area of the sleeve, whereby the two end table top members are slidingly movable relative to the central member and maintained in aligned condition.
