There has been a demand for film rolls of larger diameter and for drums of larger capacity to receive the same. When the present day drum is increased in diameter to conform to the enlarged film roll the bottom heading is likely to sag or flex downwardly and cause a telescoping of the film roll.

4 Claims. (Cl. 229-55) This invention relates to new and useful improvements in a fiber drum for shipping film rolls. There has been a demand for film rolls of larger diameter and for drums of larger capacity to receive the same. When the present day drum is increased in diameter to conform to the enlarged film roll the bottom heading is likely to sag or flex downwardly and cause a telescoping of the film roll.
An object of the invention is to provide a bottom heading wherein there is a center support for the heading which will prevent any sagging or flexing of the bottom head under the weight of the enlarged film roll.
A further object of the invention is to provide a heading for drums for film rolls which includes a drawn steel member having an integral depending center support which is dimensioned so as to prevent any downward flexing of the steel bottom member.

Figure 2 is an enlarged sectional view of a portion of the drum shown in Figure 1 and Figure 3 is a view similar to Figure 2 but showing a modified form of bottom heading.
The invention has to do with an improvement in a fiber drum used in shipping film rolls and the like. The improved drum includes a convolutely wound body portion 1. The bottom end of the drum is closed by a drawn metal member 2. Said member has a depending flange 3 at the periphery thereof and a collar 4 of fiber board fits within the flange. The lower edge of the collar is preferably flush with the lower edge of the body of the drum. The ring 4 is joined to the body wall by stitching 5 which may be in the form of staples or any other suitable connecting means.
As shown in Figures 1 and 2, these stitches pass through the flange 3 of the drawn steel bottom member 2. This drawn steel member 2 has a depending support 6 which is drawn from the steel disc forming the bottom member 2. This support has a closed bottom 7 and a substantially cylindrical wall 8. This wall 8 is dimensioned so that the lower face of the support is in a plane containing the lower edges of the body 1 of the drum.
In Figure 1 there is shown a film roll 9 which includes a center core 10 preferably of fiber material. The film is wound on the core 10 and the completed roll is of a diameter so as to loosely fit within the drum. The cen ter support 6 framed in the bottom member is of a diameter slightly less than the diameter of the core so that the film roll and its core will be suported by the flat surfaces of the drawn steel member. This center support prevents any possible sagging or flexing downwardly of the drawn steel bottom member and therfore there will be no telescoping of the film roll.
Sttes atent O 2,819,007 Patented Jan. 7, 1958 In Figure 3 there is shown a slightly modified form of bottom heading in that the flange 3 of the drawn steel bottom member terminates well above the stitches 5 joining the collar 4 to the bottom end of the body wall 1 and therefore the stitches do not pass through the metal flange.
In this form of the invention there is a fiber board tray 11 having at its periphery a flange 12 which fits within the body wall 1 and extends to the lower edge thereof. The stitches pass through the collar 4, the flange 12 and the body wall and this causes the collar to clamp the flange 3 of the drawn metal bottom member. The drawn steel bottom member has a center support 6 with a bottom closure 7 and cylindrical side walls 8. This bottom mem her is dimensioned so that the bottom surface of the support lies in a plane containing the lower edge of the body wall of the drum. The film in this form of the invention rests on the fiber tray. The tray, however, is supported by the drawn steel bottom member so that there will be no flexing of the tray downwardly due to the weight of the enlarged film roll.
It is obvious that minor changes in the details of the construction illustrated can be made without departing from the spirit of the invention as set forth in the appended claims.
I claim:
1. A fiber drum for a hollow cored body, comprising a convolutely wound fiber body, a heading for closing the bottom end of the drum including a flat steel bottom memoer having a depending flange at its periphery, a fiber board collar disposed within the depending flange, fastening means for securing the collar to the body wall and for clamping the flange of the bottom member therebetween, said steel bottom member having an integral depending center support of less width than the core of the contained body, the lower end of said support lying in the plane of the edges of the drum body.

A fiber drum for a hollow cored body, comprising a convolutely wound fiber body, a heading for closing the bottom end of the container including a flat steel bottom member having a depending flange at its periphery adapted to fit within the body of the drum, a fiber board collar disposed within said flange, stitches passing through said collar, the flange and the body wall, said steel bottom member having a depending central support formed integral therewith of less Width than the core of the contained body, said support including a substantially cylindrical wall having a closed bottom end with the underface of the bottom end lying in a plane common to the bottom edge of the body of the drum.

A fiber drum for a hollow cored body, comprising a convolutely wound fiber body, a bottom heading for closing the bottom end of the drum including a flat steel member having 2. depending flange, said steel bottom member having an integral depending support centrally thereof, the lower face of said support being common to the lower edges of the body of said drum, 9. fiber board tray containing the upper face of the steel bottom member and having a flange which fits within the body wall, a collar disposed within the flange on the steel bottom member and the flange on the tray and stitches passing through said collar, the flange of the tray and the body wall for clamping the flange of the steel member and the flange of the tray therebetween.
4. A fiber drum for a cylindrical cored body, comprising a cylindrical fiber body, a bottom including a flat rigid member having a depending cylindrical flange and an integral central depending protuberance extending to the plane of the lower edge of the fiber body, a fiber board tray overlying the upper face of the bottom member and having a flange fitting within the body wall, a collar disposed within the flange of the bottom member and the flange of the tray and fastening means t rough the collar and body member and clamping the flanges of the bottom member and the tray.
