Description
N. S. GILBERT, OF ALBION, NEW YORK.
METHOD 0F FEEDING- THE BOLTS IN SHING-LE-MACHINES.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 28,168, dated May 8, 1860.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, N. S. GILBERT, of Albion, in the county of Orleans and State of New York, have invented a new and Iniproved Machine for Cutting Barrel-Head ings, Shingles, Veneers, and the Like; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and eXact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed draw' ings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure l, is a side view of my invention. Figs. 2 and 3, are detached sectional views of the bolt-feeding mechanism, taken in the line m, Fig. l.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
To enable those skilled in the art to fully understand and construct my invention I will proceed to describe it.
A, represents an upright frame in which a sector knife frame B, is placed, and allowed to oscillate freely on a shaft C, as a center. The periphery of the knife frame B, is provided with grooved rollers a, which are fitted on a concave way or guide L, in the frame A, the way and rollers insuring a proper movement of the knife frame and thereby keeping its knife in its proper cuts ting plane.
The knife D, which is secured in the upper part of the frame B, has a double inclined cutting edge as shown clearly in Fig. 1, the angle or point c, formed by the junction of the two edges being about at the center of the knife as shown clearly in Fig. l. The knife frame B, is oscillated from a rotating shaft E, by means of a crank pulley F, and pitman G, the pitman being attached to the lower part of the frame B. The pitman G, is provided with a screw joint cl, by adjusting which, the length of the pitman may be varied, and consequently also, the stroke of the frame B, and its knife D.
The shaft E, which is the driving shaft of the machine, has a bevel pinion H, placed on it, and this pinion gears into a wheel I, on one end of a shaft J, the opposite end of said shaft J, has a toothed wheel K, on it, and the wheel K, gears into a corresponding wheel L, on a shaft M, in the frame A.
On the shaft M, there are placed two wheels N, N, each of which is provided with two radial slots c, c, in which projections f, are fitted one in each. The wheels N, N, are attached to the shaft M, by set screws g.
To the frame A, and near the ends of the shaft M, levers O, O, are secured by fulcrum pins h, and to the upper end of each lever O, a pawl z', is attached. These pawls z'.

The ends of the head block P, are tted on ways or guides m, m, attached to horizontal bars n, n, on the frame A, the inner ends of the bars a, being attached to a bar 0, which forms the rest or bearing for the face side of the bolt. To each bar n, a holding pawl p, is attached, said pawls engaging with the racks y', j.
To the frame A, and directly below the racks j, j, levers Q, Q, are attached by ful crum pins g. The levers Q, are directly in line with the levers O, O, the lower ends of the former acting against the latter. Against the lower parts of the levers O, springs R, bear as shown in Figs. 2 and 3.
S, is a shaft which is fitted in bearings 7, on the frame A, and has a loaded arm s, attached to it. The ends of the shaft S, are bent in a crank form and extend underneath the pawls z', z', of the levers O, O. To the head block l), two cords t, t, are attached said cords passing over pulleys u, u, and having weights o, at their ends for gigging back the head block when desired.
The operation is as follows: The shaft E, is rotated by any convenient power, and the knife frame B oscillated by the crank pulley F, and pitman Ch. The bolt Z, is secured to the head block P, and at each stroke of the knife D, a strip is rived from the bolt Z, the bolt being fed toward the knife each time the latter reaches its cul- Ininating point, in consequence of the projections f, of the wheels N, N, actuating the levers Q, and the latter in turn actuating the levers O, which move back the pawls i, c', over the racks y', j, the springs R, forcing the racks and bolt forward as the projections f, pass the levers Q. The holding pawls p, retain the racks j, j, while the pawls z', z', are moved back over them.
Then articles are to be cut or rived from the bolt of equal thickness. The two projections f, of each wheel N, is used, and in corresponding positions on the two wheels; but; when taper or wedgeshaped articles such as shingles, are to be cut, only one projection is used on each wheel N, and these projections 'are placed in opposite positions relatively Vto 'eac'h'othen 's that`"the Aboltv When the bolt is cut up", the 'operator raises' the loaded arm s, and the cranks at the ends of the shaft S, raise the pawls i, free from the racks j, and permit the weights fv, to gig back the bolt. Thus it will be seen that the bolt may be fed to the saw so as to be cut int-o pieces of equal thickness or into pieces of taper or wedge shape as may be required. It will also be seen that the knife D, will be ke t firmly in aY proper working position, as tie way b, and pulleys a, effect such result. In consequence of having the knife D, provided with a cutting edge of double-inclined form a smooth even cut is obtained.
