A. ROSENSTAR.
CHIMNEY TOP. No. 281,645. 5 Patented July 17,1883.
WITNESSES ATTORNEYS PATENT OFF/ICE.
ANDERSON ROSENSTAR, OF YORK, N. Y.
CHIMNEY-TOP.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 281,645, dated July 17, 1883.
Application filed December 29, 188 2. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANDERSON ROSENSTAR, of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certainnew and useful Improvements in Chimney-Tops; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved chimney-top. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section, and Fig. 3 is a cross-section, of the same. i
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures. My invention has relation to chimney-tops; and it consists of theimproved construction and combination of parts of a chimney-top, consisting of a series of detachable sheet-metal sections rectangular in shape and having 111- clined sides overlapping the sides of the section below, ashereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, the letter A represents the upper end of a chimney upon which the top is fastened. B B are two pieces of stout wire, or two metallic bars which are hinged to the lower part, 0, of the top by means of strips of metal, D, doubled over the straight parts of the bars and inserted in bails E upon the inside of the lower part, 0. The straight part of these wires or bars is as long as the opening of the chimney, and the ends are bent downward and the lower ends of these outward, as shown at F, which ends bear against the sides of the chimney, while the outward-bent ends F may be inserted between the stones or bricks in the chimney. E upon the lower part are connected, forming The bails bails G between them, in which are inserted the lower ends of the strips H, which connect the several parts together. through bails I upon the part J above part 0,, while strips K pass through bails Land M upon the ends of the lower part and part above. The part J of the top is of a similar construction as Oviz., inclined to all four sides and opening at the top; but it is smaller than 0, only covering the opening at the top of B, while the upper part, N, is roof-shaped, covering the top opening of part J. The upper, ends of the strips H and K are inserted in bails O and 1?, inside the top part, N, and hold it in place, the strips holding eachpart a short distance above each other. By fastening the sections together by means of these strips, more or less sections may be placed one above the other, and the wind, striking the inclined sides of the sections, will be turned upward and again outward by the overlapping sides of the section above, causing a draft in the chimney. The inclined sides of the top will also prevent smoke or objects from the outside from entering the chimney.
, Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- In a chimney-top, the combination of the rectangular sectionsC J, having inclined sides, and provided with bails E, G, and L, and I and M, roof-shaped top N, having bails O and v P, metallic connecting-strips H and K, doubled 7 5 strips D, forming hinges, and bent fasteningltoars B, as and for the purpose shown 'and set orth.
v In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereunto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ANDERSON ROSENSTAR. n 8.]
