2 Claims. (Cl. 299-88) This invention relates to improvements in the construction of portable spraying means.
' These improvements, applied to atomizers or pistols for painting, enable electrically operated compressors of high efliciency to be coupled thereto.
Moreover the said atomizers are equipped with an automatic electrical control, in combination with the dis charge trigger of the atomizer, which is controlled by the hand that is holding the pistol, which has complete liberty of movement for the focussing and the change of direction of the jet.
These improvements obviate the necessity for supercharging the atomizing pistols by the direct coupling to the same of a mouoblock motor-compressor, which, if it has to be of ample power output, supercharges the pistol excessively, and, if it is light and of limited dimensions, provides but little pressure.
In the first case, the pistol remains unbalanced and the movement of the hand becomes difficult; and in the second case the efiiciency of the appliance is very low.
Moreover the direct coupling to the pistol of a motorcompressor of its own involves complicated mounting and may lead to permanent injury.
With the improvements according to this invention, the aforementioned disadvantages are obviated since it yields at the same time maximum efliciency and great convenience and eflicacy in manipulation.
These improvements consist in a pressure tube, which connects the compressor to the pistol, and serves to convey compressed air to the latter from the compressor. In the interior of the tube are established two electrical conductors connected by one end to the motor, and at the other end to a push-button switch lodged in the butt or handle of the pistol in order that from the same, by closing and opening the circuit there may be actuated or checked the motor-compressor group, which may be either stationary or portable, and may be of any power and of great efficiency through not having to be subjected to predetermined dimensions, like those that are directly coupled to a pistol.
Another feature of the improvements according to this invention consists in the arrangement of the pushbutton switch, synchronized with the passage of compressed air or of paint, and with joint control in the trigger of the pistol, in that upon pressing it, the starting of the motor compressor and the delivery of air or paint are actuated simultaneously, and in that upon releasing it, the reverse effect is produced.
With these improvements, the connection between the electric compressor and the atomizing pistol is cleared of impediments and reduced to a simple tube of the required length, which serves for conveying the compressed air, and at the same time accommodating the cables or conductors for opening and closing the electric circuit of the motor.
One practical form of construction of the apparatus embodying the improvements according to this invention is illustrated by way of example in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 shows a longitudinal section of a spraying and atomizing pistol;
Figure 2 shows a detail of the same; and
Figure 3 is a general view of the pistol and the motorcompressor which are united by the compressed air pipe enclosing the electric cables.
As illustrated in these drawings, the pistol is constituted by a support which comprises a handle 1 and a barrel or tube 2. On the underside of the tube 2 there is a bracket or support 3, which unites the pistol to the paint receptacle 4.
The end of the tube or barrel 2 is provided with an atomizing mouth-piece 5, the form of which may vary according to the nature of the work to be carried out. Upon the tube 2 is mounted a frame 6 with a securing hoop, receiving a pin 7, which supports the upper end 8 of an upward extension of the trigger 9 for swinging movement.
This trigger is united by two connecting links 10 to the rear end of a closure valve 11, provided with a retaining spring 12 and with a stufiing-box 13. A valve plug 14 closes the rear end of the tube 2.
The rear ends of the connecting links 10 are equipped with a projection 15, behind which is a retarding spring 16, which bears against a guide washer and an adjusting nut 17 mounted on the stern of valve 11.
In the interior of the butt there is a plug socket 18 and a push-button 19 having a bore therein receiving a spring 20, by means of which a movable switch contact 21 is brought into engagement with a fixed contact 22.
To the lower end 23 of the butt 1 is united the coupling member 24 of the pressure tube or sleeve 25, in the interior of which there are the conductors 26, which issue from the tube 25 in a zone protected by rings 27.
In the case illustrated in Figure 3, the apparatus is composed of the pistol that has just been described, and of a motor-compressor group comprising an electric motor 28 and a rotary compressor 29, from which starts the tube 25, into the beginning of which enter the conductors 26, protected by suitable ring means 27 A handle 30 enables the apparatus to be conveniently lifted by hand, and two loops 31 enable it to be suspended from the shoulder with a belt.
It is clear therefore that the invention provides a portable spraying apparatus which includes a pistol means having a barrel and a handle through which is formed an air flow passage. A valve 11 is operably associated with the passage and as shown in the drawing is mounted to move axially of the barrel. This valve is normally held closed by spring means 12. A hollow chamber is provided in the handle that is separate from the air passage portion therethrough. The conductors 26 issuing from the end of the flexible tube 25 that is in communication from the air portion passage in the handle and the air compressor, extend into the chamber in the handle and are respectively connected with a fixed contact 22 and the movable contact 21. The push button 19 has its spring 20 hearing against the wall of the chamber so that the push button and movable contact 21 connected thereto are normally urged in the direction to bring the movable contact into engagement with the fixed contact. The projec tion 15 at the rear of links 10 moves rearwardly when the trigger 9 is moved toward the handle. This movement compresses spring 16 which bears against nut 17 fastened to the valve stem so that the valve 11 moves to open position depending on the pressure exerted on the trigger. Simultaneously, projection 15 in moving away from push button 19 permits spring 20 to move the movable contact into engagement with the fixed contact to start the motor of the compressor so that with the opening of the valve the "motor driven compressor forces air through the pistol. When the trigger 9 is released spring 17 urges projection, links and trigger forwardly so that spring 12' can close the valve'and the projectionjlimoves thepush button 19 in the reverse direction to open the switch and'hold it open-until the next time the trigger is actuated toward the handle. In Figure 1 the trigger is shown in .theposition in'which it' has moved-slightly towardithe handle so-that the'valve ll-is open and the switch contacts'a're closed in other words'Figure 1 illustrates the .positionof the parts during aspraying operation.
The atomizing equipment, withthe improvements 'described, can be utilised either for automatic paintingland forthe atomization of insecticides and disinfectants of any kind,,and in general in all forms of application of the same, bothof a domestic. and of an industrial character.
I claim:
'1. In aportable atomizing apparatus, the combination of an atomizing pistol having an air.passagetherethrough anda flexible tube connected to said pistol in communication with said passage, said tube having electrical.conductors therein adapted for connection with an electrically driven air compressor that will force air through the tube*and pistol, said pistol having a chamber therein separate from the airpassage, said conductors terminatingwithin the chamber, a needle valve operably associated with the passage for opening and closing the same to control air flow through said tube and pistol, means normally urging the needle valve to closed position, a pair of switch contacts within the chamber, and electrically connected to said conductors, at least one of said contacts being movable with respect to the other, said pistol having an opening therein in communication with said chamber, a push button mounted within the chamber and including a portion projecting through said opening, said movable contact being connected to said push button, means normally biasing said push button to move to switch closing position, a trigger means pivotally mounted on said pistol and operably associated with said needle valve to move the same to open position in response to movement of said trigger in one direction, said trigger means including a projection bearing against the projecting portion of said push button and means normally urging said Cir vpassage portion inthehandle; the 'handlehaving an opening therein in communicationvwithsaidchamber, electrical conductor means within said tube and including portions extending into and terminating within said chamber, a fixed and a movable switch contact Within said chamber and electrically connected to said conductor means, means connected to sai'd'movable'contact'and normallybiasing the same to move to switch closingposition, a-valve-means disposed within said barrel, avalve seat' within said barrel with which said valve cooperates to control air flow through the pistol, said valve including a stem extending axially of thebarrel and having-a portion-projecting outwardly thereof, -a=trigger means -'pivotally "mounted on said pistol, link means I connected to said trigger means andincludinga portion disposed'about'said stein adjacent said-barrel, said last; mentioned portion having" an extension disposed opposite the opening in thehandle, the means connected with the movable 'contact'including a portion ;project-able 'through said opening, and spring means surroundingsai'd sterr'rand bearing against the portion of-"the link means disposed about said stern to'normallyurge said extension ina direction to move said movable contact to switch open position whereby actuation of said triggenmeans toward=said handlc'opens the valve and allows the switch contacts 'toclose Whereas releasing of said trigger -r'nea-ns automatically effects closing of said valve andm eningof-said switchcontacts.
