SEWING-MACHINE SHUTTLE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 281,453, dated July 17,1883.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, ELIZABETH CHAVERS,

of Siddon, Mason county, Michigan, have in is mounted on a spindle heldinthe shuttle and screwed in a screw-cap on one end of the shuttle, the thread of which spool is then passed through an aperture or slot in the shuttle, through a U shaped slot in a blade pivoted on the shuttle, and through an opening in the said blade, and is then passed through the opening in the sewing-plate of the machine.

Reference is to be had to theaccompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters ofreference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.

"Fig. 3 is a cross-sec tional elevation of the-same on line y Fig. 2. The shuttle A is constructed hollow, and is provided at one end with a threaded neck, B, on

which an internally-threaded cap, 0, is adapted to bescrewed, in which cap the spindle D is screwed, and on whichspindle the spool F is loosely mounted. The spindle Dpasses 1on gitudinally through the shuttle, and has its end passedinto the end plate, E, of the shuttle, which end plate, E, can be fastened in the shuttle by means of any suitable spring device. The spool F is held on the spindle D by means of washers G G, or other like or suitable fastenings. On the shuttle a blade, H, is pivoted, which is provided with a U- shaped slot, J, and with an aperture, K. I The shuttle is provided with a longitudinal slot, L. A'spring-clip, M, serves to hold the free end of the blade H in the desired position. The shuttle is provided with two lugs, N N, for holding it in position in the shuttle-race. Thethread a is passed through the slot L, through the two longitudinal parts of the U-shaped slot J-that is, under the tongue formed by the said slotand then under the blade H, through theaperture K, and is then passed through the aperture in the sewing-plate. The screw-cap 0 holds the spindle D in place, andby removing the screw-cap the spindle can be withdrawn. The end plate, E, is removed when a spool is to be placed in the shuttle. The usual bobbins are not used, and the time generally wasted in winding the bobbins is saved.

- Having thus described myinventioll, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. In sewing-machine shuttles, the combination of a screw-cap, G, centrally apertured and threaded,a spindle, D, threaded at one end, and an externally-threaded neck to receive the cap, whereby the spindle may be held and re- 7 leased, as described.
