WAVE-POWER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No.p281,7370, dated July 17, 1883.

Be it known that I, WILLIAM E. JoRY, of the city and county of San Francisco, State of California, have invented an Improved Wave- Power 5 and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and eXactdescription thereof.
lVIy invention relates to that class of devices specially adapted to be affected by the waves, and commonly known as wave-powers.
It consists in a float having vertical screws connected with the main shaft by gearing, which transmits the vertical movement of said screws in the manner I shall hereinafter particularly describe.
The object of my invention is to provide a simple and effective means for utilizing the power of the waves or tides.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a side elevation of my device. Fig. 2 is a plan ofthe ratchets H, gear I, and pawl fi. Fig. 3 is a detail section of same on screw.
A is a wharf or other suitable foundation secured in the water. Under it, and between it and the supports or piles, is a large float, B, upon the water.
C C are the standards, one at each end and one in the middle, connected loosely with the oat by a ball-and-socket joint, designated by c, whereby the float may adapt itself to the changing surface of the water without. affecting the perpendicularity of the standards. These standards extend up through the wharf loosely, and have vertical screws D secured toy their tops. .y

Mounted upon the screws D are ratchets H. These are loose upon the screws, and have studs h, traveling in the threads of the screw, whereby the vertical movement vof the screws will turn the ratchets, Fig. 3.
Mounted loosely upon the screws are gears I, having pawls z', held to place by springs i. These pawls are adapted to be engaged by the ratchets when turning in one direction, but
serves as a guide for i not in the. other, as I shall explain. The end gears, I, `mesh with pinions J on the drivingshaft. The central gear meshes with a pinion, K, on a supplementary shaft, L, the top of which is provided with -a gear, lVI, meshing with a pinion, J', on, the driVingshaft. The threads of the end screws have an opposite direction, one being'right hand and the other left hand, in-order to drive the shaft in the same direction. The center one has its threads corresponding to one of the ends for a similar purpose. The pawls t' ofthe end gears, I, are so arranged that when the screws move up, their ratchets H will engage them, 'and so turn the gears; but when the screws move down,
movement results. rIhe pawl of the center gear is arranged `in an'opposite manner, so that it is engaged by the ratchet only when the central screw -moves down.
The operation of the device is as follows: A wave striking under one end lof the float elevates that end and depresses the other. One end screw is elevated and transmits motion to the driving-shaft, while the other is lowered and does not operate, and vice versa. The oat, by being connected with ball-andp socket j oint, may thus move freely. All downward movement of the float is transmitted through the central screw. The screws are made long enough to allow for the rise and fall of the tide and still operate. Any movement of the oat is thus transmitted to the driving-shaft.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In awave-power, the float B, the standards C, connected loosely therewith, and the vertical screws D, on the standards, in combination with the ratchets H, loosely mounted on the screws, and having studs h, traveling in .their threads, the driving-shaft F, and intermediate gears for transmitting the motion of the ratchets to the shaft, substantially as herein described.

3. rI he iloat B, having loose end standards, C, and end screws, D, having threads of different direction, in combination with the ratchcts H,having studs 11traveling in their threads, the loose gears I, having pawls z', engaged by the ratchets when the screws move up and disengaged when they fall, the driving-shaft F, and pinions J, meshing with gears I, whereby the action of the waves on either end of the loat may be transmitted to the drivingshaft, substantially as herein described.
4. The float B, having a central standard,
C, loosely connected therewith, and the eentral vertical screw, D, on said standard, in combination with the ratchet H, having a stud, 71., traveling in the thread of the screw, the gear I, having a pawl, i, adapted to be engaged by the ratchet when the screw moves down and to disengage when it moves up, the supplementary shaft L, having pinion K, and gear M, and the driving-shaft F, having pinion J, all arranged and operating substantially as herein described.
