Description
CARDING MACHINE Filed Sept. 8, 1955 Patented Oct. 29, 1957 lice CARDING MACHINE Wilhelm Altenburger, Turbenthal, Switzerland Application September 8, 1955, Serial No. 533,178
3 Claims. (Cl. 19-70) The present invention relates to carding machines and more particularly to a device in carding machines which is adapted to permit the production of a card sliver of uniform thickness.
It is well known, -that in order to produce a high quality thread or yarn with respect to its mechanical properties it is a necessity that the card sliver have a minimum of irregularities in its cross-section. Numerous devices have bene provided to permit the production of such a card sliver i. e. to equalize the thickness of the card sliver and to compensate for differences which are due to irregularities in the web delivered to the sliver funnel.
An object of the present invention is the provision of a carding machine which permits the production of a card sliver of uniform crosssection. A further object of the invention is to provide a compensating device in a carding machine which automatically and continuously compensates for the unevenness of the card sliver after delivery of the web to the sliver funnel. A still further object of the invention is the provision of a compensating device in a card producing textile machine which compensates for irregularities in the thickness of the card sliver by a variation of the speed of rotation of the calender roller drawing the card from the sliver funnel and delivering it to the coiler can.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a compensating device in a carding machine which permits the control of the speed of rotation of the coiler can dependent on the delivery of the calender rollers to ensure an even coiling of the card sliver in the can without stretching of the card.
In order that the invention may be better understood and put into practice one embodiment thereof is hereinafter described by way of example and with reference to the accompanying drawing showing in schematical representation the compensating device according to the invention arranged at the delivery side of the carding machine.
ln the drawing the numeral 1 designates the carding machine of which only the delivery side is shown. Numerals 2 and 3 designate calender rollers which are adjustable with respect to their axial distance from each other. The roller 2 provided with a circumferential groove 4 is driven by the carding machine 1 by a set of wheels 5. The lower roller 2 is supported on a shaft 2a journalled in bearings 2b. The upper roller 3 is adjustable in radial direction with respect to the lower roller 2. Shaft 6 carrying the upper roller 3 is pivotably arranged on a bolt 7 extending horizontally and at right angles with respect to the shaft 6. The roller 3 on the shaft 6 is driven by a gear wheel pair 8 from the lower roller 2. The end of the shaft 6 facing away from the pivot 7 is connected to a rod 9 which latter is in hinged engagement with a ilat bar 11 by means of a bolt 10. Plat bar 11 is with its one end pivotably arranged on a bolt 12 while its other end is provided with a pin 13 engaging a slot 14 in one arm of a two-armed lever 15 pivotably supported by a bolt 16. The other arm of the two-arm lever 15 is provided at its end with a fork-shaped portion 17 engaging a belt 18 of a steplessly variable speed transmission. The speed `transmission comprises two frusto- conical rollers 19 and 26 respectively, the latter roller being driven by the carding machine by gear wheels 5, shaft 2a, chain transmission 22 and shaft 21, which latter supports roller 20. Roller 19 is in driving engagement with a pair of drawing rollers 23 of the drawing mechanism associated with the carding machine 1 by a shaft 27 and gear wheels 28a. The other end of the shaft 27 is connected by bevel gears 29 with the driving shaft 3b of the sliver can 25. Shaft 30 is provided at its one end with a gear wheel 31 engaging gear wheel 32 connected with the can 33. The other end of the shaft 30 is in driving engagement with a pair of delivery rollers 34 (only one shown) by means of bevel gears 35. In addition shaft 30 carries a gear wheel 36 meshing with a rack provided at the press wheel 37. The card sliver passing through the drawing rollers 28 is led to the delivery rollers 34 of the sliver can 25, which delivery rollers feed the card through a channel 38 provided in the press wheel 37 into the coiler can 33.
In the operation of the carding machine the web owing from the carding machine as indicated by lines 39 is collected by a funnel (not shown) and led to rollers 2 and 3. By passing thruogh the circumferential groove 4 of roller 2 the sliver 26 is given a predetermined uniform width. The card may, however, have irregularities in thickness which will be compensated by the device according to the invention as follows:
irregularities in thickness of the sliver 26 passing through the groove 4 of roller 2 will be deflected by roller 3 due to its pivoting arrangement on bolt 7 together with its associated shaft 6 in that the position of roller 3 with respect to roller 2 depends on the thickness of the material passing btween these two rollers. Consequently the roller 3 will rise a-s the thickness of the sliver increases and will be lowered i. e. approach roller 2 as the thickness decreases. Due to this substantially radial movement of roller 3 shaft 6 will be pivoted about the bolt 7 thus transmitting its movement over rod 9, bolt 10, bar 11 and pin 13 to the two-arm lever 15, which latter will be pivoted accordingly. Due to this pivoting movement of lever 15 the belt 18 will be displaced on the transmission rollers 19 and 2t) by the fork-shaped portion 17, causing a corresponding adjustment of the speed of rotation of roller 19. Consequently, also the speed of rotation of the drawing rollers 28 and of the rotating members of the sliver can 25 will be adjusted accordingly. Since the speed of delivery of the sliver 26 from the carding machine 1 and the speed of rotation of the rollers 2, 3 will always remain constant a variation of the speed of rotation of the drawing rollers 28 will cause a drawing effect at the sliver between rollers 2, 3 and drawing rollers 28 corresponding to the movement of roller 3, as described above. The drawing rollers 28 are driven such that also with a sliver of uniform thickness passing between rollers 3 and 4 a drawing effect will always be present. Thus if the thickness of the sliver decreases the drawing effect of the rollers 28 will be `decreased due to the corresponding decrease in their speed of rotation caused by the detecting movement of roller 3. If on the other hand portions of increased thickness of the sliver 26 pass between the rollers 2 and 3 the drawing effect of rollers 28 will be increased corresponding to the difference in thickness of the sliver. Therefore the thickness of the sliver 26 leaving the drawing rollers 28 will be uniform as will be easily understood.
It will be noted that the speed of rotation of the sliver can is varied in accordance with the speed of rotation of the drawing rollers 28. to ensure that no drawing .eect will be produced at the delivery rollers 34 due to undesired variations in speed of rotation with respect to the drawing roller-s 28.'V 'If thedrive of the sliver can were Vnotfcon-l trailedV accordance with the speed of rotation of thedrawin-g reliefs 2'8 i. e. if its speed would remain constant thecompensationachieved by Varying the drawing elect between rollers 2, 3 and V2S according to the thickness would be nullied. The shown arrangement insures, how-V ever, that a sliver of uniform thickness wili be depositedin can 33 thus permitting to Yobtain a thread or yarn of high quality with respect'to mechanical properties.
Manywideiy diierent embodiments of this invention may bernade Without departing from-the spirit and scope thereof. V4Thus it would be possible to control the transmission 19, 20 instead of' by purely` mechanical means Y said sliver forming means and said -sliver'can comprising sliver thickness measuring means arranged in front of said drawing means, steplessly variable speedV transmission means driven-by said web delivery means and driving said drawing means, control means for said speed transmission means and movement transmission means conasmae t U nesting said thickness measuring means with said. control means, said thickness measuring means being adapted to influence said movement transmission means in accordance with variations in thickness of said sliver and to Vary the speed of rotation of said drawing means and of said sliver can by actuating said control means to adjust said speed transmission meanSL..
2. A sliver producing textile machine as claimed in Y claim 1, wherein said thickness measuring means consists of two rollers, one of 'said roilers being adapted for radial movement with respect to said yother roller in accordance K s with the-thickness of the sliver passing between said rollers.
3. A sliver producing textile machine as claimed in claim 2, comprising a pivotably supported shaft and links and rods and wherein said movable roller is arranged on said `pivotably supported shaft transmitting movements of said roller over said links and rods to said control means.
