Description
Oct. 22, 1957 v. T. WIGLESWORTH 2,810,172
CLIPS FOR GARMENT HANGERS Filed April 17, 1956 lul\H INVENTOR.
United States Patent I 2,810,172 CLIPS FOR GARMENT HANGERS Victor T. Wiglesworth, Portland, Oreg. Application April 17, 1956, Serial No. 578,827 1 Claim. (Cl. 24-81) This invention relates to improvements in clothes hangers, and more particularly to attachment parts adapted to be used in connection with the common type coat hanger for the support of skirts, pants, or other similar garments.
I have as the objects of my invention the following:
(a) The primary object of this invention is to provide a pair of clips adapted to be easily applied to a common wire coat hanger and to further provide easy adjustment means to maintain a skirt or the like in a set position between the clips.
(b) A further object of this invention is to provide clips formed of a single piece of material as in casting or molding materials and also provided with clamping jaws to grip or hold a supported garment.
(c) A still further object of this invention is to provide clips that will grip and hold themselves to a wire hanger and that will increasingly grip tighter when more horizontal tension is applied to a garment.
With the above object and advantages in view I have provided the preferred details of construction hereinafter described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings wherein.
Referring to the drawings:
Figure 1 is a partial side view partly'broken away illustrating the clips in position on a coat hanger.
Figure 2 is an end elevation taken on lines 2-2 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a cross section side view taken on lines 3-3 of Figure 2 illustrating the clip in locked position on the wire hanger.
Figure 4 is a cross section end view taken on lines 4-4 of Figure 3 illustrating the locking angle forming part of the clip.
Figure 5 is a perspective view of one of my clips illustrating the locking grooves in dotted position.
Figure 6 is a side elevation illustrating the method of placing a clip on the wire hanger.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, in Fig ure 1 is shown a portion of a standard wire garment hanger 1 having a horizontal crossmember 2 upon which garment supporting clips 3 and 3A are positioned, and a garment 4 is shown in dotted position, the garment 4 may be a skirt, slacks or pants etc. which are supported by the waist band position of the garment.
The clips 3 and 3A are formed of a single piece of material as for example phenolic or other suitable plastic, aluminum, glass or other like materials, and is formed in a cylindrical body portion 5 and an arm portion 6 extending downward and away, from the cylinder 5 and terminating on its lower end in a split jaw consisting of two leg members 8, 9, of which the member 8 is formed of lesser dimensions then the portion 9 and is resilient to grab or pinch a garment inserted between the jaw members 8, 9, the open portion 7 between the jaw members 8, 9 extends upward at an angle to the vertical as illustrated in Figure 1 to prevent the garment from working out of the jaws after being assembled in position.
The body portion 5 is provided with a vertical slotway 10 extending slightly beyond the diametric center of the body 5 and being wide enough to receive the crossmember wire 2, horizontal mating slotways 11 and 12 extend along the vertical center line of the body 5, the
2,810,172 Patented Oct. 22, 1957 "ice slotway 11 extends upward beyond the longitudinal center line as illustrated in Figure 2 and the slotway 12 extends downward beyond the longitudinal center line as illustrated in Figure 4, both slotways 11, 12 enter into the vertical slotway 10 and provide the means of positioning the clips 3, 3A to the crossmember wire 2. By positioning the slotway 10 over the wire 2, and moving the arm 6 downward the wire 2 will be received in the slotways 11, 12 and the arm 2 being of sufiicient weight will by gravity force hold the clips 3, 3A in their mounted positions.
To supply a gripping action of the clips to the wire one side of the slotways 11 and 12 terminate on their outer ends 13 and 14 in shoulders 15 and 16 and the shoulders 15 and 16 are slightly tapered toward the slotway bottoms. When a horizontal pressure is applied to the arm 6 a leverage action takes place forcing the wire deeper in the slotways between the tapered shoulders 15, 16 and their respective slotway sides effecting a positive lock of the clips 3 to the wire 2.
In applying a garment to the clips 3, 3A the clips are first adjusted apart to a slight lesser dimension than the waist dimension of the garment, then the garment waist portions are positioned between the legs 8, 9 as illustrated in Figure 1. The clips are then moved outward in opposite directions to take up slack in the garment waist and cause a horizontal inward force to be exerted on the legs 6 to force the shoulders 15 and 16 to grip the wire tightly thereby holding the positioned garment in its set position until release of the clips 3, 3A.
A slight upward pressure applied to end 13 of the cylindrical body 5 adjacent the arm 6, and a downward pressure applied to the opposite end 14 of said body will release the clip for movement on the wire.
It is here noted that the device as described is molded in a single piece eliminating expensive assembly operations, thereby providing an inexpensive article of manufacture that is neat in appearance without sharp corners or rough surfaces to snag or tear a garment.
Having thus described this invention I do not wish to be limited to the exact structure as described as various modifications of the scope of this invention are within the spirit of the following claim.
What I claim is:
A garment clip for attachment to wire garment hangers comprising a single molded piece of material having a cylindrical body portion and a gripping arm portion, said arm portion joining the body portion on its one end, extending angularly away from the body, and having an angular pair of gripping jaws, formed on its lower end to grip and hold a garment waist band, the cylindrical body portion having a slotway horizontally along the under side of the cylinder terminating in a vertical cross slotway at the center portion of the cylindrical body portion, said cross slotway terminating in a slotway extending horizontally along the upper side of the cylinder and terminating at the rear end of the cylinder, the depth of the slotways extending beyond the diametric center slightly more than the diameter of the hanger wire, each horizontal slotway having an angular shoulder extending toward the diametric center point of the cylinder, substantially at each end of the cylinder, to effect a wire gripping action by force applied to the arm portion horizontally toward the cylinder portion.
