This invention relates to a conversion unit for converting table model television sets into console or consolette form.

A substantial difference in cost exists between table model and console or consolette model television sets 1s due to the differences in the cost of the cabinets, and it is generally conceded that console or consolette model sets are the more pleasing in appearance. It is the primary object of the present invention to provide a conversion unit which enables a table model television set to be given the appearance of a console or consolette set at a cost less than that of a comparable console or consolette model set offered for sale by set manufacturers.

It is another object of this invention to provide an easily installed conversion unit for table model television sets which is of simple, yet sturdy construction, pleasing in appearance, and capable of being produced at relatively low cost.

Other objects and advantages will become apparent from a consideration of the following detailed descrip non, forming the specification, and taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, in which:

With continued reference to the drawings, an illustrauve conversion unit, generally indicated at 10, is shown, with a table model television set 12 supported thereon.

The unit comprises a generally rectangular platform 14 provided with a plurality of support legs 16 whereby the platform is maintained in a horizontal position above a supporting surface, such as a floor.

Mounted upon the platform 14 is a support, generally designated 18, which comprises a pair :of laterally spaced upstanding side walls 20 and 22 maintained in their spaced relation by a pair of lower cross brace members 24 extending therebetween and secured at their opposite ends to lower portions of the side walls at points spaced from each other and from the front and rear ends 19 and 19, respectively, of the side walls. A rear upper cross bar 26 extends between and is secured to upper portions of the side walls 20 and 22 at the rear ends thereof and below the upper edges 21 and 23 of the side walls 20 and 22, respectively. A similar front cross bar 27 extends between and is secured to upper portions of the side walls 20 and 22 at their front ends, with the top 29 of the bar 27 on a level with the upper edges of the side walls.

Secured to the under surfaces of the cross members 2,806,754 Patented Sept. 17, 1957 24 centrally of the support 18 is a stamped metal disc 28 which is rotatably mounted upon a similar but reversed disc 30 which is fixedly secured to the upper surface of the platform 14.

A rivet or a bolt and nut assembly 32 traverses the centers of the discs 28 and 30. With this arrangement the support 18 can be rotated relative to the platform 14 to assume any angular position desired, as indicated in broken lines in Figure 3.

The side walls 20 and 22 are preferably made of wood, although other suitable materials may be employed, and are formed as rectangular frames with outer covers 32 extending across the outer faces of the frames.

A horizontal lintel bar 34 extends across and between and is secured to the front ends 19 and 19' of the side walls 20 and 22 and projects forwardly therefrom and terminates at opposite ends flush with the covers 32.

A vertical frame, generally designated 36, of inverted U-shape has parallel legs 38 and 40 and a bight portion 42 extending between the legs which have lower ends 41, mounted upon the lintel bar 34 in line with and abutting the front ends 19 of the side walls 20 and 22 and secured thereto. The legs 38 and 40 have swingably mounted thereon doors 44 adapted to be moved into coplanar relation with each other in the opening of the frame 36.

A horizontal 'door stop bar 46 is secured to the front side of and projects forwardly from the front upper cross bar 27 and extends between the legs 38 and 40 of the frame 36 with its upper surface flush with the upper surface of the cross bar 27 and its front surface spaced rearwardly from the front surfaces of the frame 36.

A panel 48 simulating the speaker grille of a console model television :set, is mounted in the space between the legs of the frame 36 and the bars 34 and 36.

The television set 12 is assembled to the unit 10 by resting it upon the upper edges 21 and 23 of the side walls 20 and 22 and upon the top of the front cross bar 27 of the support 18, with the front 50 of the set disposed in abutting relation to the rear surface of the frame 36, which serves as a stop and as an aligning means for the set. A horizontal header bar 57, secured to the front side of the bight portion 42 of the frame 36, projects forwardly therefrom over the doors 49 when the doors are in closed positions.

The screen 52 of the set 12 and its controls 54 will be exposed and accessible through the opening 56 defined by the bight portion 42 and legs 38 and 40 of the frame 36 and the door stop bar 46.

While there is shown and described the preferred embodiment of the invention, it is to be understood that the structure is susceptible to change and modification within the practicability of the invention and therefore should be limited only by the scope of the claims appended hereto.

What is claimed is:

I.
