United States Patent O DOOR STOP FITTINGS Bruno Oskar Svensson, Upplands Vasby, Sweden Application December 12, 1952, Serial No. 325,510
1 Claim. (Cl. 292-271) The present invention relates to a device for holding doors or the like open, and has for its object to provide a device of this kind which is easy to mount and operate and is absolutely reliable in use.
The device according to the invention comprises three very simple parts, namely, two fittings and one rod extending between said ttings and co-operating therewith, and its main feature is the special design of the fittings as well as the special way of functioning caused thereby.
An embodiment of the invention is described in the following text, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing, in which Fig. 1 is a perspective side view of the device as mounted for use, and
Fig. 2 is an end View of the same.
Referring now to the drawings, the numeral 1 designates a stopping tting fastened to the bottom side of the upper, horizontal part of a door frame 7. Said fitting 1 has an angular, downwardly projecting portion 9 provided with a hole for receiving one end of a rod 4, and a likewise downwardly projecting stopper 2. This stopper is spaced from the angular portion 9 and its edge nearest said angular portion is substantially vertical, while its remote edge is inclined downwardly towards the angular portion 9.
The numeral designates another fitting, which may be considered a slewing fitting, which is screwed fast to the upper part of a door 8. This tting is provided with an angular portion projecting horizontally land having a hole receiving the other end of the rod 4. At this end, said rod 4 has an angular bend serving as a handle 6, which also gives the rod a low centre of gravity. At the end thereof entering the hole in the fitting 1, the rod 4 has a short angular bend 3. The diameter of both said holes are considerably larger than the diameter of the rod. In the drawing, which shows the device in the position it assumes when the door is open, said angularly formed portion 3 of the rod is projecting between the portion 9 ice and the stopper 2, abutting against the latter at any attempts to shut the door. To close the door, the handle 6 is swung somewhat away from the door 8 as indicated by dash lines in the drawing, the angularly formed portion 3 of the rod passes the stopper 2 and the rod glides through the hole in the portion 9 of the fitting 1. When the door is opened again, the portion 3 of the rod will automatically slide over the inclined edge of the stopper 2, assume its checked position between the stopper and the portion 9 and be kept in this position on account of the low centre of gravity of the handle 6.
The two fittings may be fastened in diiierent places on the door frame and the door respectively, whereby the device is adjusted for holding the door open in various opening angles. Furthermore, the rod 4 is easy to remove to release the door completely.
I claim:
A door stop device comprising a stopping tting adapted to be fixed to the lintel of a doorway, a slewing fitting adapted to be fixed to a portion of the door, each of said fittings having a guide means provided with a hole extending therethrough, a retaining rod extending through said holes in said guide means, said rod having both its end portions extending at right angles, one to serve as a handle portion and the other as a stopping portion, said stopping iitting comprising a plate having a rst portion provided with one of said holes and constituting the said guide means of said stopping fitting, said first portion projecting at approximately right angles from said stopping tting plate, said plate also having a second portion spaced from said rst portion and forming a slot between itself and said rst portion, said retaining rod being rotatable by means of said handle portion through such an angle that the stopping portion thereof can move out of said slot to let the retaining rod slide through said hole of the stopping tting during door closing movement, the handle portion serving as a weight to swing said stopping portion into said slot at the end of the door opening movement, said hole of said stopping fitting having substantially the same diameter as said retaining rod thereby enabling the rod, during the movement of the stopping portion out of said slot, to rotate about an axis which is identical with the axis of said retaining rod.
