1 Claim. (Cl. 15-28).
This invention relates to brushes in the form of attachments for utility motor mountings, and in particular a cylindrical brush head carried by a shaft rotatably mounted in a tubular stem with the head of the brush positioned in a circular recess in an enlarged cylindrical section at one end of the stem and with the opposite end of the stem adapted to be mounted 'over a sleeve'extended froma motor housing with a shaft extended through the sleeve and tubular stem and with the brush head secured on the extended end of the shaft.
The purpose of this invention is to provide a brush attachment for a universal motor mounting having a handle in which the brush is readily adapted for shining or polishing shoes, and the like.
Various types of attachments have been provided for use on small electric motors, such asmotors of vacuum cleaners, fixtures, and the like and similar combinations of attachments have been provided for shop use, particularly for cutting, polishing, and the like, however such devices are not adapted for use in polishing shoes and the like. With this thought in mind, this invention contemplates providing a shoe polishing brush with means for mounting the brush on a small motor whereby the brush is adapted to be held in various angularly disposed positions for cleaning and polishing shoes.
The object of this invention is, therefore, to provide a brush attachment adapted to be secured to an electric motor wherein the brush is adapted to be held in contact with a shoe as it is rotated.
Another object of the invention is to provide a shoe polishing attachment for a small motor in which the brush of the attachment is adapted to be used for shining and polishing shoes and is also adapted for cutting.
A further object of the invention is to provide a rotary brush attachment for a small motor mounting in which the device is of a simple and economical construction.
With these and other objects and advantages in view the invention embodies a tubular stem having an enlarged cylindrical section at one end, with one end adapted to be secured to a sleeve extended from a motor mounting or housing and with the opposite end adapted to provide a housing for the end of a brush with the bristles extended outwardly from the housing and with the brush threaded on an extension shaft extended through the stem.
Other features and advantages of the invention will appear from the following description taken in connection with the drawings, wherein:
Figure l is a side elevational view illustrating the improved electrically operated brush.
Figure 2 is a vertical sectionjhrough the attachment showing a method of securing the attachment to a sleeve extended from a motor housing and also showing means for mounting a brush in the attachment.
Figure 3 is a sectional plan taken on line 3-3 of Figure 2 illustrating the connection between the sleeve extended from the motor housing and also the connection 7 ice between the motor shaft and an extension shaft in the tubular stem.
Figure 4 is a side elevational view of the brush attachment showing a modification wherein a shaft on which the brush is carried is threaded on a tubular coupling connected by a pin to the motor shaft.
Figure 5 is a vertical section through the attachment with the parts as shown in Figure 4, illustrating the connection of the extension shaft to the motorshaft.
Figure 6 is a sectional plan taken on line 6-6 of Figure 5, showing a pin connecting the coupling to the motor shaft.
Referring now' to the drawings wherein like reference characters denote corresponding parts, the improved brush attachment of this invention as illustrated in Figures 1, 2 and 3, includes a tubular stem 10 having an enlarged cylindrical section '11 at the upper end, and another enlarged cylindrical section 12 on the lower end and a disk 13 providing a brush head with bristles '14 extended from the disk and with the disk threaded on the end of anextension shaft 15 extended from a motor in a motor housing having an upper section 16 and a lower section 17.
The stem 10 is provided with a bore 19 through which the extension shaft 15 extends, and the cylindrical section orfiange 11 at the upper end of the stem is connected to the body of the stem with a frustro-conical shaped sec.- tion 20. The flange or wall 11 of the section on the .upper end of the stem is provided with cap screws 21by which the attachment is secured to a sleeve 22 extended from the lower section 17 of the motor housing and, as illustrated in Fig.2, an opening 23 in the sectional flange 11 is positioned in alignment with a corresponding opening 24 in the sleeve 22 and these openings are adapted to be aligned with a recess 25 in a socket 18 on the upper end of the extension shaft 15, whereby with a pin 9, extended through the openings 23 and 24 and into the recess 25, the extension shaft 15 may be held stationary as the brush head 13 is threaded on and removed from the shaft 15.
The extension shaft 15 is connected to the motor shaft, which is indicated by the numeral 26, with a pin 27 that extends through openings in the collar 18 and shaft 26.
The cylindrical section or head 12 on the lower end of the tubular stem 10 is provided with a circular recess 33 in which the brush head 13 is positioned and an annular recess 28 at the lower end of the bore 19 of the stem provides a seat for a ball bearing 29 which is mounted on the extension shaft 15, the ball bearing race providing a stop for the brush head, and being positioned to take the thrust thereof.
With the brush mounted in this manner the head may readily be removed so that the brush may be replaced with brushes of different types and adapted to be used for different purposes, such as a device for use in cleaning white shoes or shoes of comparatively light colors.
The brush head 13, which is formed of a suitable plastic is provided with openings 31 in which the bristles, which may be formed of fiber, hair, wire, or the like, may be secured with a suitable plastic or adhesive.
With the attachments supplied as a separate and independent unit it may readily be installed over the extension shaft 15 and sleeve 22 of the motor housing with stem 40, which is provided with an enlarged lower end 41 and a cylindrical section 42 at the upper end is se- Patented Sept 10, 1957 3 cured to a motor housing 43 with screws 44 that extend through a flange 45; and the brush head 46 which is positioned in a recess 47 in the lower end 41, is threaded on the lower end of an extension shaft 48, the enlarged upper end ' 49 of which is threaded on a coupling collar 50 that is secured on a motor shaft 51 with a pin 52.
The cylindrical section 42'of the stem 40 is provided with spaced openings 53 through which the collar 50 may be gripped to hold the collar as the brush head is turned to screw the head on and 01f of the extension shaft.
The outer surface of the upper end 49 of the extension shaft 48 is provided with longitudinally disposed grooves 54 to facilitate gripping the shaft.
The lower end of the stem 40 is provided with a ball bearing 55 Whichforms a thrust bearing providing a stop for retaining the brush head.
.The bristles may readily be worked into grooves or recesses between the shoe sole and upper whereby shoes may be thoroughly cleaned and also whereby polish may readily be applied over the entire surface of the shoe. By the same means, after applying the polish, the polish may be rubbed down and finished whereby a high polish may be obtained.
The brush shines, and polishes, and may be used for cutting on the bevel of the brush. The brush is made with a plastic sealed head and may be provided in dilferent designs, such as may be required for different pur- 'poses.
It will be understood that modifications, within the scope of the appended claim, may be made in the design and arrangement of the parts without departing from the spirit of the invention. What is claimed is:
In a spreading, shining, polishing and cutting brush, the combination of which comprises a motor housing having an upper section and a lower section a sleeve extended from the lower end'of the lower section, a handle extended at right angles from the lower section of the motor housing, a motor in said motor housing having a drive shaft extended into the lower section, a tubular stem having enlarged cylindrical sections on the ends with the enlarged cylindrical section at the upper end attached to the sleeve extended from the lower section of the motor 7 housing and with the enlarged cylindrical section at the lower end having a cavity therein, an extension shaft coupled to the motor drive shaft and extended through the tubular stem, a ball bearing on said extension shaft and mounted in the tubular stem, providing a stop to take the thrust of the shaft, a plastic brush head having bristles extended therefrom threaded on the lower end of the extension shaft and positioned in the cavity of the enlarged cylindrical section at the lower end of the stem,
alined openings in said tubular stem, sleeve and extension shaft and a pin removably inserted into said alined openings for maintaining the extension shaft rigid for the I removal of said brush head.
