COMBINED BURGLAR-ALARM AND DOOR-SECURER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 280,501, dated July 3, 1883.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, HIRAM MORTON MOORE and CHARLES ELMER MOORE, both of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Combined Door-Stop and Burglar-Alarm, of which the following is afull, clear, and exact description.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.

Figure 1 is a perspective View of our improvement, shown as applied to a door. Fig. 2 is a plan View of the improvement, the gong being removed. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the same, partly in section, and showing the door in edge View.

The object of this invention is to provide a simple and convenient means for fastening doors securely, and which will give an alarm should an attempt be. made to open the said doors.

The invention consists in a combined doorstop and burglar-alarm, constructed with a bar recessed at its upper end to receive the shank of a door-knob, and provided with a groove to receive a sliding bar having a push-rod connected with its lower end to disengage a hook connected by an elbow-lever with a spring and a bell-hammer, and allow the said spring to swing the said hammer against the bell and sound an alarm, as will be hereinafter fully described.

A represents a bar, of wood or other suita ble material, of such a length as to stand at an angle of about forty-five degrees when its lower end is placed upon the floor and its upper end beneath the knob of a door. The upper end of the bar A is recessed to receive the shank of the door-knob, and in the upper side of the said upper end is formed a groove, B, to receive a bar, O, which is kept in place in the said groove by a plate, D, attached to the said bar A.

To the lower part of the bar 0 is hinged the'upper end of a rod, E, which is curved, passed through a staple or other guide, F, attached to the said bar A, and has its end bent upward at right angles to rest against the shank of the hook G when the said hook is hooked around a pin or screw, H, attached to the bar A. The shank of the hook G is hinged to the arm of an elbow-lever, I, which is piV- oted at its angle to the stand of a gong, J, attached to thebar A. The other arm of the elbow-lever I is connected with a spring, K, also attached to the bar A. \Vith the elbow lever I is connected the bell-hammer L.

Upon the rear side of the lower part of the 1 shank of the hook G is placed a pin, M, to prevent the said hook from being pushed too easily off the pin H, and which serves as a fulcrum to cause the hook G, while being pushed off the pin H, to act as a lever in putting the spring K under an increased tension.

In using the improvement the recessed upper end of the bar A is placed against the shank of the door-knob and its lower end is placed upon the floor. The sliding bar 0 is drawn upward to rest against the shank of the doorknob, and the hook G is hooked upon the pin H, so that the sliding bar 0 will be held up by the end of the rod E resting against the said hook.

With this construction, should an attempt be made to open the door, the pressure will force the sliding bar 0 downward, pushing the hook G off the pin H, and allowing the hammer L to be swung against the gong J by the action of the spring K.

\Ve are aware that a burglar-alarm sounded by pressure against a retractile frame connected with an alarm detent and attached alarm mechanism is not new; also, that a case has been secured by bottom flanges to and made movable on a support provided with a stud passing through the case, the escapement being held until the case is pressed by the door; but

\Vhat we do claim as new and of our inven- 0 tion is In a door-stop and burglar-alarm, the combination, with a recessed and grooved bar, A, and the bell-hammer and spring L K, of the sliding bar O, the push-rod E, the hook G, and the elbow-lever I, substantially as herein shown and described, whereby a slight inward movement of the said sliding bar will release the bell-hammer spring and sound an alarm, as set forth.
