14 Claims. (Cl. 336-96) The present invention relates to improvements in transformers and more particularly to high voltage and deflection transformers employed in television apparatus and the like.
In transformers of this variety, the primary coil is tapped with leads extending therefrom to respective terminal connection means. At least one high voltage terminal connection need be provided when the transformer is of the type known as an auto-transformer. Frame structures for carrying such terminals have resulted in cumbersome constructions, lengthly connection leads affording leaks and no help to compactness.
The principal object of this invention is to provide a novel and improved construction for transformers of the character mentioned, which overcomes the stated objectionable features, provides proper insulation and convenient, readily accessible connection terminals and properly protected high voltage terminal structure.
A further object hereof is to provide a novel and improved construction in apparatus of the character set forth, which is reasonably cheap to manufacture, easy to deal with in assembly into a television apparatus system and eflicient in carrying out the purposes for which it is designed.
Other objects and advantages will become apparent as this disclosure proceeds.
In the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification, similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Fig. 1 shows a transformer embodying the teachings of this invention. Part of this view is shown in section; such section being taken along lines 1-1 of the part of this transformer shown in Fig. 2.
Fig. 2 is a right-hand side view of the part shown in section in Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a section taken at lines 3-3 in Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is a wiring diagram of the transformers electrical structure.
In the drawings, the numeral 15 designates generally a transformer whose primary coil 16 is on a core 17 and whose secondary coil 18 is on and about the primary coil. The former is tapped at points therealong by the leads 1923 respectively and one end of said primary coil is connected to the inner end 24 of the secondary coil in the embodiment illustrated. The secondary coil is in the form of a comparatively thin annulus, while the primary coil is long by comparison.
The secondary coil 18 is encased within an annulus of insulative material molded thereabout and such insulative casing is here denoted by the numeral 25. Integral of such insulative casing, on one face thereof preferably,
are a plurality of spaced bosses as 26, in each of which is securely imbedded one end of a metallic element 27. These elements may be of any suitable form and structure to serve to connect a lead as 28 thereto respectively. The leads 1923 are suitably connected to said metallic elements 27 respectively, as by soldering indicated at 29.
Said metallic elements 27 are of course, in suitable spaced relation. Preferably from the periphery of the annular casing 25, there extends integral therefrom, a teat or boss 30 having a lateral projection, head or flange 30'. Through this boss 30 lies the outer lead 31 which is connected to the high tension end 32 of the secondary coil 18. Said insulative casing 25 is molded about the secondary coil with provision that the inner lead 24 extend therefrom for connection to one of the terminals afforded by an element 27, and also with provision that the outer lead 31 extend through the boss 30 for a predetermined distance.
- The high tension lead 31 being bare, needs to be insulated to very near its exposed end. For such purpose insulative tubing piece 33 is slid thereon and stretched over the boss 30. Such tubing shall be of resilient material or chemically deformable material'so that it assume the contour of said boss and become anchored by the protrusion 30. Such insulative tubing may be of rubber or preferably of vinyl plastic which expands upon being dipped in such agents as amyl acetate and then contracts in short time.
It is readily understood without further illustration that when the secondary coil end 24 is to be independent of connection to primary, that a second teat as 30 may be provided therefor on the periphery or elsewhere on the casing 25 in proper spaced relation from all the other terminals. The core structure may of course be of any type or structure, conditions of use may dictate.
This invention is capable of various forms and applications without departing from the essential features herein disclosed. It is therefore intended and desired that the embodiment shown herein be deemed illustrative and not restrictive and that the patent shall cover all patentable novelty herein set forth; reference being had to the following claims rather than to the specific description herein to indicate the scope of this invention.
I claim:
1. In a transformer, a primary coil having a series of leads extending from and respectively electrically connected to points therealong, a secondary coil; said primary coil being positioned within the-secondary coil, an annular insulative casing embedding only the secondary coil and positioned about the primary coil, a series of spaced metallic elements secured to and extending from said insulative casing; said leads being respectively electrically connected to said elements; the ends of the secondary coil being accessible for electrical connection exterior the casing.
2. The apparatus as defined in claim 1, wherein said elements have means adapted to mount other leads thereon in electrical connection therewith respectively.
3. The apparatus as defined in claim 1, including at least one boss extending from the insulative casing; one of the leads of the secondary coil being positioned through and extending from said boss; said boss having a lateral projection thereon, a tubular insulative element having said last mentioned lead extending therethrough exterior the casing and having said boss therein together with the lateral projection of the latter; said insulative tubular member conforming substantially to the said boss and its projection where said tubular member is in contact therewith whereby said insulative tubular member is anchored on said boss.
4. The apparatus as defined in claim 3, wherein said lateral projection is a flange on said boss.
5. The apparatus as defined in claim 3, wherein said boss extends from the periphery of the insulative casing.
6. The apparatus as defined in claim 3, wherein the insulative casing is provided with a series of spaced bosses extending therefrom; each of the metallic elements being partly imbedded and'extending from one of said series of bosses respectively.
7. The apparatus as defined in claim 6, wherein said casing presents said series of bosses from one face thereof.
8. The apparatus as defined in claim 1, wherein said secondary coil and positioned about the primary coil and having at least one boss extending therefrom; one of the leads-of the secondary coil being positioned through and extending from said boss; said boss having a lateralpro jection thereon, a tubular insulative element having said lead extending therethrough exterior the casing and hav-* ing said boss therein together with the lateral projection of the latter; said insulative tubular member conforming substantially to the said boss and its projection whereby said tubular member is in contact therewith and anchored on said boss.
11. The apparatus as defined in claim 10, wherein the said lateral projection is a flange on said boss.
12. The apparatus as defined in claim 10, wherein said boss extends from the periphery of the insulative casing.
13. The apparatus as defined in claim 10, wherein said insulative casing is molded on the secondary coil.
14. The apparatus as defined in claim 10, wherein the insulative casing is compaartively thin and the primary coil is beyond each face of said casing.
