15 Claims. (Cl. 346--59) The invention relates to time-recording and printing machines such as disclosed in Letters Patent Reissue 13,597, dated July 22, 1913, and particularly to new and useful improvements in dating mechanism therefor.
A prime object of the present invention is to provide a time-recording and printing machine with improved means for recording and printing the day and month of the year.
Another object of the invention is to provide a timerecording and printing machine with improved means for recording and printing the day and month of the year simultaneously with the recording and printing of the time of day and elapsed time record.
A further object of the invention is to provide a machine of this kind with elapsed time dials and dating dials, all movable to printing position as a unit.
Still another object of the invention is to provide a recording and printing machine of this kind with improved means for manually resetting the dating dials.
For further comprehension of the invention and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, and to the appended claims in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.

In the practice of my invention, I provide a machine which, as illustrated in the accompanying drawings, is, or may be, the same as the machine of said Patent Reissue 13,S97, except in the particulars hereinafter specified. Such machine comprises a rectangular-shaped frame 1 housed in a casing 2. The frame includes an upper plate 3 and a lower plate 4 connected by corner posts 5. Time keeping mechanism for driving the various dies and the hands of the visible dial (not shown) is supported by and between the plates. The mechanism is adapted to record elapsed time in units of two denominations and also the time of day. The elapsed time pointers 6 and 7 are, respectively, mounted upon a slidable arbors 8 and 9, which are journalled in said plates, the arbors resting upon a disk 10 that is loosely mounted upon a slidable arbor 11. The disk 10 is prevented from being forced downwardly below a certain level by means of a hooked rod 12 depending from the lower plate at each side thereof. The pointers 6 and 7 are normally in lower, nonprinting position.
The arbors 8 and 9 are provided with reduced portions (not shown) which receive the forked ends of springs 13 and 14 that are fastened to the lower plate. The reduced portions are formed in such apostion that when the disk 10 is resting on the rods 12, the lower ends of said reduced portions are below the level of the upper surface of said lower plate so that said springs normally bear upon the plate. This frees the arbors 8 and 9 from the friction of said springs when the pointers are in their lower, normal and non-printing position.
The arbor 11 carries at its upper end a support member or cross bar 15 upon which rest sleeves 16 and 17 which carry at their upper ends the cup- shaped dials 18 and 19. As shown in the patent, a pointer die and its dial are rotatably connected by means of a pin that projects from the pointer die through a hole in the dial die. The dial 18 is provided with gradations representing tenths of an hour, and the dial 19 with gradations representing hours. This construction permits the pointer and dial dies to be retracted from printing position by means of the springs 13 and 14 so that the machine can 'be used in a position where the weight of the parts could not be utilized for such purpose, as, in a vertical position of the machine.
In order to drive the elapsed time dies, the arbor 8 of the tenths pointer 6 and the arbor 9 of the hour pointer 7 are operatively connected to timing motors and gearing as disclosed in said patent.
Time of day recording dies are constructed and operate similarly to the time of day recording dies shown in said patent and include a cup-shaped die 20 with its tubular shank housed and slidable wtihin a sleeve 21. A minute pointer 22 revolves within the hour dial upon an arbor 23 which passes through the lower plate 4. The arbor 23 is, like the arbors 8 and 9, provided with a reduced portion that is engaged by a forked spring 24, the latter being secured upon the lower plate 4. The spring serves to retract both the hour dial and the pointer because the pointer engages the dial as the pointer is drawn down by the action of the spring on its arbor. The arbor 23 is operatively connected to and driven by the mechanism for operating the arbors 8 and 9. The hour hand 25 travels around outside the hour dial and is mounted upon a disk 26 at the upper end of the sleeve 21, the lower end of the sleeve being provided with a toothed disk 27 which is operatively connected to the arbor 28 which is journalled in the plates 3 and 4 and carries the hands of the visible dial (not shown). The connection includes a toothed disk 29 fixed on the arbor28 meshing with a pinion 30 on the upper end of a stub shaft 31 mounted on the upper plate 3. A toothed disk 32 on the shaft 31 carries the drive to a toothed disk 33 on an arbor 34 journalled in the plates 3 and 4, and a pinion 35 on the arbor 34 meshes with and drives the toothed disk 27 on the sleeve 21. The disk or gear 29 is driven by said timing motors through a gear train of known type to turn one revolution in twenty-four hours.
By the term elapsed time dies as used throughout the specification and claims is meant dies adapted to record the measure of the interval of time as distinguished from the time of day at the beginning or close of such interval. The elapsed time dies may be used for making a record reading in hours and in tenths or fractions of an hour in decimals. The dividing of the hour into decimals facilitates the calculation of the cost of the operation in dollars and cents, or other decimal form of money. It will also be understood that instead of dividing the dial 18 into gradations representing tenths of an hour, it may be divided into minutes or any desired time interval or other unit.
According to the present invention, mechanism is provided for printing the year, month and day of the month of a record. For this purposes, a plate 36 is fastened to the upper surface of the cross bar 15 by screws 37. At its front end, the plate is formed with an upstanding flange 38. An arm 39 is hinged at one end to the top edgeof flange 38, at its center, and etxends rearwardly between the dials 18 and 19. At its rear end, the arm is shaped to provide a socket 40 for receiving and supporting a type die 41, bearing the year. In order to adjust the travel of the free end of the arm 39 carrying the die 41, a screw 42 is mounted on the central portion of the rear end of the plate 36 and is formed with a nut-shaped portion 43 for turning the same. Adjustment of such screw serves to regulate the pressure upon the dating die.
A thick disk 44 is rotatably mounted on the outer end of a stub shaft 45 extending outwardly from one end of the flange 38, and a thick disk 46 is similarly mounted on the outer end of a stub shaft 47 at the other end of the flange, the disks being disposed in the same vertical alignment. The disk 44 bears indicia 48 constituting spaced numerals reading consecutively from 1 to 31 representing the days of a 31-day month. Disk 46 bears indicia 49 on its periphery constituting the names of the months of the year or suitable abbreviations thereof spaced therearound. Mechanism is provided for automatically turning the day disk 44 one step each twenty-four hours and for turning the month disk 46. Such mechanism includes an elongated lever 5t) pivotally mounted intermediate its ends on a stud 51 extending upwardly from the upper plate 3, along one side thereof. One end of the lever is formed with an outwardly extending flange 52 which continues at its top end into a finger 53 forming an offset extension of the lever. The finger 53 overlies the gear 29 on the arbor 28 and its free end is projected in the path of movement of a pin 54 carried on the upper surface of the gear. A compression spring 55 has one end fastened to a stud 56 on the upper plate 3 and its other end fastened to the flange 52 whereby the finger 53 is held in operative position. The other end of the lever is formed with an outwardly extending flange 57 and pivotally secured to the top end of said flange 57 is one end of a lever 58, the other end of the latter llever being formed with a nose portion 59 in aligned engagement with the teeth of a toothed wheel 60 secured to the inner face of the day disk 44. A compression spring 61 having one end secured to the upper plate 3 and its other end to the lever 58 urges the nose portion 59 into engagement with the teeth of the wheel 60. A pin 62 carried on the nose portion 59 and engaging with the edge walls of a notch 63 in the flange 38 prevents upward displacement of the free end of the lever so as to lock the printing disk or day die 44 in position. Upon each complete revolution of the toothed disk 29, the pin 54 4 strikes the finger 53 thereby rocking the lever 50 which in turn rocks'the lever 58 whereby the day die 44 is turned one step, each step representing a day in the calendar.
A lever 64 is slidably mounted on the shank of a screw 65 which extends outwardly of the plate 36 between the disks 44 and 46 and through an elongated curved slot 66 in the lever midway its ends. The lever is disposed across the disks and has one end olfset from the plane of the body of the lever and slotted as indicated at 67 with its bifurcations 68 straddling the stub shaft 45 mounting the disk 44 outwardly of said disk. The other end of the layer is formed with a nose portion 69 terminating in an extension 70. The nose portion is normally in mesh with the teeth of a ratchet 71 fixedly connected to the disk 46 with the projection 70 extending beyond the periphery of said disk. At the base of the offset end, the lever is formed with an instruck lug 72 which is disposed in the path of movement of'the working face 73 of a cam member 74 fixed to the disk 44. A wire spring 75, with one end fixed to the instruck lug 72 of the lever and impinging against the underside of a pin 77 projecting from the lever adjacent said lug and having its free end impinging against the opposite or upper side of a pin 78 carried by the lever adjacent its nose portion, yieldingly holds the lever in engagement with the ratchet 71 so as to yieldingly lock the disk 46 in position. A compression spring 79 has one end secured to a pin 80 on a disk 81 on the stub shaft 45 and its other end secured to the pin 78 urging the nose portion 69 of the lever toward and against the teeth of ratchet 71. A spring 83 secured to a block 84 mounted on the plate 36 has one end hooked and impinging against the teeth of toothed wheel 60 and its other hooked end impinging against the teeth of ratchet 71 thereby holding the wheel and ratchet against accidental displacement.
The elapsed time dies 18 and 19 and the dating dies including the day die 44, month die 46 and the year die 41 are carried on the plate 36 and move as a unit with the cross bar 15 so that when the arbor 11 mounting said bar is raised by the lever 85 all. of said dies are raised to printing position. Disk 10 is elevated by lever 86. The arbor 23 with its die 20 is raised to printing position by a lever 87.
In using the day and month dating dies, the parts are preset so that after a twenty-four hour period the pin 54 on gear disk 29 on the arbor 28 will have reached the finger 53 of the lever 50 and rocks the lever which in turn rocks the lever 58 whereby the day die 44 is turned one step by the nose portion 59 of said lever 58. After thirty-one days, the day die and the cam member 74 will have turned so that the outermost end of the working face 73 of the cam 74 reaches the end face of the instruck lug 72 on the lever 64. The lever is forced outwardly by the cam face, and causes the nose portion 69 to slide outwardly and downwardly along the back of the tooth of the pinion 71 until it is clear of the point of said tooth at which time the compression spring 79 pulls the nose portion upwardly into alignment and into engagement with the front of the same tooth. As soon as the cam face 73 rides clear of the face of the instruck lug 72, the compression spring retracts the lever pulling the nose portion against the front of the tooth and moving the ratchet and month die 46 one step thereby bringing the name or abbreviation of the next month into printing position and resetting the parts for another cycle.
Means is provided for manually rocking the lever 50 for resetting the day die 44, for any desired purpose. Such means includes a sleeve member 88 turnably mounted on a stud projecting outwardly from the upper plate 3 and through an opening 89 in the lever 50 near its flange 52. The sleeve member is formed with an extension 90 angular in cross-section to receive a tool for,
turning the sleeve member. A radial pin 91 carried at the bottom of the sleeve member is disposed in the space between. the side edge of thev flange 52 and. an outstanding. lug 92 on the lever adjacent said: flange whereby when the sleeve member is swung around by a tool the pin engages the lug 92 and rocks the. lever on its pivot for turning the day diev 44. The day die 44. with its cam Z4actuatesthe month die 46 only once. every thirtyone days so that-for a month of less than thirty-one days, it is necessary to manually reset the day die 44.
Manual resetting on the month die 46 for any desired purpose is accomplished by an elongated lever 93 having one end pivoted to. a pin 94, mounted on an angular bracket 95 fastened to one side of the. upper plate 3, adjacent one end thereof. The other end of the lever carries a spring. hooked finger 96, the hooked end of which is aligned with the teeth of a gear 97 secured to the month die 46. Lever 93. may be actuated by pressure applied to car 103. in order to. force the. finger 96 into engagement with the teethv of gear 97 for turning the same. An extension 99 secured to the free end of the lever 93 by rivets 100' provides means for engaging the projecting extension 70 on the lever 64 for. moving the nose portion 69 of said lever away from th pinion 71 .at the same time the hooked spring finger 96 is, being moved inwardly against the teeth of ratchet 97 whereby the month die 46. is turned one step. The finger 9 6 is normally held outwardly and free. of said teeth of the ratchet by a. coil spring 101 sleeved around a stud 102' on the upper plate 3' adjacent the lever 93. The spring impinges against an ear 103 formed on an elongated bar 104 secured to the lever 93 by a bolt 105', said spring urging the lever 93 outwardly of the upper plate 3. A hooked pinv 10.6 on the upper plate 3 limits I the outward movement of the lever.
Any suitable platen and inking mechanism may be utilized for making impressions from the dies. on the card, for example, as. shown in Patent No. 2,259,677, dated October 21, 1941, which also shows elapsed time recording mechanism of the same general type as that disclosed in Patent Reissue No. 13,597. For the purpose of illustration I have shown a rubber platen 107 mounted on a platen holder 108 above an inking ribbon 109 between which and the rubber platen the card 110 to be printed is inserted.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it is to be understood that I do not limit myself to the precise construction herein disclosed and the right is reserved to all changes and modifications coming within the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
What I claim is:
1. In a time and date printing machine having a slidable arbor, across bar carried by said arbor, elapsed time dies carried by said cross bar, means for slidingsaid arbor, a pair of rotatable disks connected to said cross bar, said disks constituting a day-of-the-month die and a month-of-the-ycar die, said pair of disks being operatively connected to the means for sliding said arbor whereby all of said dies are simultaneously moved to printing position as a unit, a rotatable arbor mounting the hour and minute hands of a time of day dial, and.
means of operative connection between said rotatable arbor and said day-of-the-month die for rotating the latter, including a toothed disk fixed on said rotatable arbor and rotatable therewith, a toothed wheel rotatable with said day-of-the-month die and lever means operativcly connected between said toothed disk and said toothed wheel.
2. In a time and date printing machine having a slidable arbor, a cross bar carried by said arbor, elapsed time dies carried by said crossbar, means for sliding said arbor, a pair of rotatable disks connected to said cross bar, said disks constituting a day-of-the-month die and a month-of-the-year die, a rotatable arbor mounting the hour and minute hands of a time of day dial, and means of operative connection between said rotatable arbor and said day-of-the-month die for rotating the latter, including a toothed disk fixed on said rotatable. arbor and rotatable therewith, a protruding: pin carried by saidtoothed, disk, 2. rockable lever having one end disposed in the path. of movement of said pin, another lever pivotally. connected to said rockable lever, a toothed. wheel rotatable with said day-of-the-month die, and, a
' nose portion on said pivoted lever in engagement with said toothed wheel for rotating the same.
3. In a time and date printing machine having a slidable arbor, a cross bar carried by said arbor, elapsed time dies carried by said cross bar, means for sliding said, arbor, a pair of rotatable disks connected to said cross. bar, said disks. constituting a day-of-the-month die and a month-of-the-year die, a rotatable, arbor mounting the hour and. minute hands. of a. time of day dial, means of operative connection between said rotatable arbor and said. day-of-the-month die for rotating the latter, including a toothed, disk fixed on said rotatable arbor and rotatable therewith, a, protruding pin carried by said toothed, disk, a rockable lever having one end disposed in the path of movement of said pi-n, another lever pivotally connected to said rockable lever, 21. toothed wheel rotatable with said day-of-thermonth die, a nose portion on said pivoted lever in engagement with said toothed wheel for rotating the same, and means of connection between said day-o-the.-m.onth die and said month-of-the-year die whereby the latter die is, rotated by said day-of-the-month dievv at spaced time intervals.
4. Ina time and. date printing machine having a slid,- able arbor, a crossbar carried by said arbor, elapsed time dies. carried by said cross bar, means for sliding said arbor, a pair of rotatable disks connected to said cross bar, said, disks constituting a day-of-the-rnonth die and a month-of-the-year die, a rotatable arbor mounting the hour and minute, hands of a time of daydial, means of operative connection between; said rotatable arbor and said day-ot-the-month die for rotating the latter, including a toothed disk fixed on said rotatable arbor and rotatable therewith, a protruding pin carried by said toothed disk, at rockable lever having one end disposed in the path of movement of said, pin, another lever pivotally connected to. said rockable lever, a toothed wheel rotatable with said day-of-the-month die, a nose portion on said pivoted lever in engagement with said toothed wheel for rotating the same, and means of connection between said day-of-the-month die and said month-ot'-the-year die whereby the latter die is rotated by said day-oi-the-month die at spaced time intervals, including a cam actuated lever disposed between the die disks and adapted to engage a stationary part of said month-of-the-year die and rotate the same at spaced time intervals.
5. In a time and date printing machine having a slidable arbor, a cross bar carried by said, arbor, elapsed time dies carried by said cross bar, means for sliding said arbor, a; pair of rotatable disks connected to said cross bar, said disks constituting a day-of-the-rnonth die and a month-of-the-year die, a rotatable arbor mounting the hour andminute hands of a time of day dial, means of operative connection between said rotatable arbor and said day-of-thc-month die for rotating the latter, and means of connection between said day-of-the-month die and said month-of-the-year die whereby the latter die is rotated by said day-ot-the-month die at spaced time intervals, including a cam member rotatable with the dayof-the-month die, a slidable lever interposed between said disk dies, one end of said lever being disposed in the path of movement of said cam member for sliding said lever, said lever being formed with a nose portion adjacent the other end thereof adapted to engage a pinion on the month-of-the-year die whereby said latter die is rotated at spaced time intervals.
6. In a time and date printing machine having a slidable arbor, a cross bar carried by said arbor, elapsed time dies carried by, said cross bar, means for sliding said arbor, a pair of rotatable disks connected to said cross bar, said disks constituting a day-ot-the-month die and a month-of-the-year die, a rotatable arbor mounting the hour and minute hands of a time of day dial, means of operative connection between said rotatable arbor and said day-of-the-month die for rotating the latter, including a toothed disk fixed on said rotatable arbor and rotatable therewith, a protruding pin carried by said toothed disk, a rockable lever having one end disposed in the path of movement of said pin, another lever pivotally connected to said rockable lever, a toothed wheel rotatable with said day-of-the-month die, a nose portion on said pivoted lever in engagement with said toothed wheel for rotating the same, and means for manually rotating said day-of-the-month die independently of said rotatable arbor.
7. In a time and date printing machine having a slidable arbor, a cross bar carried by said arbor, elapsed time dies carried by said cross bar, means for sliding said arbor, a pair of rotatable disks connected to said cross bar, said disks constituting a day-of-the-month die and a month-of-the-year die, 'a rotatable arbor mounting the hour and minute hands of a time of day dial, means of operative connection between said rotatable arbor and said day-of-the-month die for rotating the latter, including a toothed disk fixed on said rotatable arbor and rotatable therewith, a protruding pin carried by said toothed disk, at rockable lever having one end disposed in the path of movement of said pin, another lever pivotally connected to said rockable lever, a toothed wheel rotatable with said day-of-the-month die, a nose portion on said pivoted lever in engagement with said toothed wheel for rotating the same, and means for manually rotating said day-of-the-month die independently of said rotating arbor, including a tool actuated rotatable sleeve member and a radial pin carried by said sleeve member and movable against a stationary part of said rockable lever.
8. In a time and date printing machine having a slidable arbor, a cross bar carried by said arbor, elapsed time dies carried by said cross bar, means for sliding said arbor, a pair of rotatable disks connected to said cross bar, said disks constituting a day-of-the-month die and a month-of-the-year die, a rotatable arbor mounting the hour and minute hands of a time of day dial, means of operative connection between'said rotatable arbor and said day-of-the-month die for rotating the latter, means of connection between said day-of-the-month die and said month-of-the-year die whereby the latter die is rotated by said day-of-the-month die at spaced time intervals, and means for manually rotating said month-ofthe-year die independently of said day-of-the-month die.
9. In a time and date printing machine having a slidable arbor, a cross bar carried by said arbor, elapsed time dies carried by said cross bar, means for sliding said arbor, a pair of rotatable disks connected to said cross bar, said disks constituting a day-of-the-month die and a month-of-the-year die, a rotatable arbor mounting the hour and minute hands of a time of day dial, means of operative connection between said rotatable arbor and said day-of-the-month die for rotating the latter, means of connection between said day-of-the-month die and said month-of-the-year die whereby the latter die is rotated by said day-of-the-month die at spaced time intervals, and means for manually rotating said month-of-the-year die independently of said day-of-the-month die including a pivoted lever, a hooked finger carried by said lever adapted to engage a pinion mounted on said month-ofthe-year die, and means for actuating said latter pivoted lever.
10. In a time and date printing machine having a slidable arbor, a cross bar carried by said arbor, elapsed time dies carried by said cross bar, means for sliding said arbor, a pair of rotatable disks connected to said cross bar, said disks constituting a day-of-the-month die and a month-of-the-year die, a rotatable arbor mounting the hour and minute hands of a time of day dial, a pinion connected to and rotatable'with said month-of-the-year die, means of operative connection between said rotatable arbor and said day-of-the-month die for rotating the latter, including a lever interposed between said disks and having an extension, means of connection between said day-of-the-month die and said month-of-the-year die whereby the latter die is rotated by said day-of-themonth die at spaced intervals, and means for manually rotating said month-of-the-year die independently of said day-of-the-month die including a pivoted lever, a hooked finger carried by said lever adapted to engage the pinion, means for actuating said latter pivoted lever, and an extension on said latter pivoted lever adapted to engage the extension on the lever between the disks for displacing said latter lever.
11. In a time and date printing machine having a frame, an arbor slidable in said frame, a cross bar carried by said arbor, elapsed time dies carried by said cross bar, means for sliding said arbor, a pair of rotatable disks connected to said cross bar, said disks constituting a dayof-the-month die and a month-of-the-year die, a rotatable arbor mounting the hour and minute hands of a time of day dial, means of operative connection between said rotatable arbor and said day-of-the-month die for rotating the latter, including a lever interposed between said disks and having an extension, means of connection between said day-of-the-month die and said month-ofthe-year die whereby the latter die is rotated by said day-of-the-month die at spaced intervals, means for manually rotating said month-of-theyear die independently of said day-of-the-month die including a pivoted lever, a hooked finger carried by said lever adapted to engage the pinion, means for actuating said latter pivoted lever, an extension on said latter pivoted lever adapted to engage the extension on the lever between the disks for displacing said latter lever, and a hooked pin on the frame for limiting the outward movement of said latter pivoted lever.
12. In a time and date printing machine having a slidable arbor, a cross bar carried by said arbor, an angle plate mounted on said cross bar, elapsed time dies carried by said cross bar, means for sliding said arbor, a pair of rotatable disks connected to said cross bar plate, said disks constituting a day-of-the-month die and a month-of-the-year die, a rotatable arbor mounting the hour and minute hands of a time of day dial, means of operative connection between said rotatable arbor and said day-of-the-month die for rotating the latter, means of connection between said disk dies whereby the monthof-the-year die is rotated by said day-of-the-month die at spaced time intervals, and means for holding said disk dies against accidental displacement including a spring member connected to said plate and having hooked ends impinging against the toothed wheel on said day-of-themonth die and against the ratchet on said month-of-theyear die.
. 13 In a time and date printing machine having a slidable arbor, a cross bar carried by said arbor, means for sliding said arbor, a pair of rotatable disks connected to said cross bar, said disks constituting respectively a dayof-the-month die and a month-of-the-year die, an arbor to turn one complete revolution each twenty-four hours, means of operative connection between said rotatable arbor and said day-of-the-month die for rotating the latter, including a toothed disk fixed on said rotatable arbor and rotatable therewith, a protruding pin carried by said toothed disk, a rockable lever having one end disposed in the path of movement of said pin, another lever pivotally connected to said rockable lever, a toothed wheel rotatable with said day-of-the-month die, a nose portion on said pivoted lever in engagement with said toothed wheel for rotating the same, and means of connection between said day-of-the-month die and said month-of-the-year die whereby the latter die is rotated by said day-of-the-month die at spaced time intervals.
14. In a date printing machine as defined in claim 13, the last-named means comprising a toothed wheel connected to said month-of-the-year die, a reciprocable leverpawl for actuating said toothed wheel, a cam rotatable with said day-of-the-month die for actuating said leverpawl in one direction, and a spring for actuating said lever-pawl in the opposite direction.

In a time and date printing machine, a support member, a pair of rotatable disks connected to said support member, said disks constituting respectively a dayof-the-month die and a month-of-the-year die, a rotatable arbor to turn one complete revolution each twentyfour hours, means of operative connection between said rotatable arbor and say day-of-the-month die for rotating the latter, including a toothed disk fixed on said rotatable arbor and rotatable therewith, a protruding pin carried by said toothed disk, a rockable lever having one end disposed in the path of movement of said pin, another lever pivotally connected to said rockable lever, a toothed wheel rotatable with said day-of-the-month die, a nose portion on said pivoted lever in engagement with said toothed wheel for rotating the same, and means of connection between said day-of-the-month die and said month-of-the-year die whereby the latter die is rotated by said day-of-the-rnonth die at spaced time intervals.
