Description

(No Model.) I
A. DANZIGER.
GOMPOSING STICK. No. 279,352. Patented June 12 1883.
INVBNTOR mam/W WITNESSES 4 UNITED STATES- PATENT OFFICE.
ADOLPH DANZIGER, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGN OR OF ONE-HALF TO FREDERICK SIEBERT, OF HOBOKEN, NEW JERSEY.
COMPOSING-STICK.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters-Patent No. 279,352, dated June 12, 1883. Application filed January 24, 1883 (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ADOLPH DANZIGER, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Double Oom- 5 posing-Stick, of which the following is a full,
clear, and exact description.
The object of my invention is to provide a new and improved double composing-stick for compositors and type-setters, whereby they will be enabled set type for columns of differ ent widths in the same stick.
The invention consists in a composing'stick provided with atransverse partition on its upper surface and between the ends, whereby r 5 the stick will be divided into two parts. An adjustable end piece is held on the stick at each side of the partition, thus permitting the stick to be adjusted for setting type for two columns of different widths on one stick.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying v drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both figures.
Figure l is a plan view of my improved double composing-stick. Fig. 2 is a front longitudinal elevation of the same.
The object of my invention is to facilitate the setting up of printed matter; and it consists of the combination and arrangement of 0 parts, substantially as hereinafter fully set forth and claimed.
A fiat metal strip, A, is provided with a flange, F, on its upper surface, along one edge, in the same manner as the usual composing- 3 5 stick. A partition, B, is secured edgewise on the upper surface of the plate or strip A, and crosses the same, thereby dividing the plate or strip A into two, parts. Two adjustable transverse end pieces, 0, rest on the plate or strip 0 A-one at each side of the partition Band are provided with hook-plates D, projecting over the flange F, for the purpose of holding the end pieces on the plate A, and guiding the same in their movements to and from the partition B. To the hook-plates clamps E are pivoted, which are adapted to be passed over the flange F and serve to hold the end pieces, 0, in the desired positions. Any suitable latch or clamp can be used for this purpose.
The device is used as follows: The end piece O on one side of the partition B, is so adjusted that the distance from the same to the partition B will be equal to the usual width of the column of the matter to be printed on the-page, and the other end piece 0 is so adjusted that the distance from the same to the partition 13 will accommodate matter to be set up in a different width of column. The type-setter or compositor then sets the usual matter between the partitionB and one end piece 0, and when he reaches the matter requiring a different width of space he sets the type for the same between the partition-B and the other end piece C; and after he has finished the tables, poetry, &c., and has to set matter of the usual 6 5 width of column, he continues to set the type between the partition B and the first-mentioned end piece C. Much time is thus saved, and only one composing-stick will be required, and all the inconveniences and annoyances caused by misplacing one of the two sticks usually used are avoided.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secureby Letters Patent 1. A composing-stick made, substantially as herein shown and described, with a transverse partition secured on the upper surface of the same between the ends, thereby dividing the composing-stick into two parts, as set forth.
2. The combination, in acomposing-stick, of a transverse partition secured on the upper surface of the same, between the ends, and of two adjustable end piecesone at each side of the transverse partitionsubstantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
ADOLPH DANZIGER.
