Description
(ModeL) H. HARTMAN. GOMBINATION 0w OPENER.
Patented June 5. 1883,.
7 LN'V'ENTOR WITNES% M ATTORNEYS.
TTED STATES PATENT OFFICEg HENRY HARTMAN, OF SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH TERRITORY, ASSIGNOR TO YVM. M. JOHNSON AND KATE HEUSSER, OF SAME PLACE.
- COMBINATION CAN-OPENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 278,951, dated June 5, 1883,
' Application filed March 19, 1883. (Model) V To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY HARTMAN, of Salt Lake City, and county of Salt Lake and Territory of Utah, have invented anew and Improved Combination Can-Opener, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact de scription.
Reference is tobe had to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specificatiomin which the figure is a perspective view of my new and improved combination can-opener.
A represents the wooden handle of the combination can-opener, upon the forward end of which is placed the ferrule or cap B, which is formed with the pointed cutting-blades a for opening tin cans.
The point C, used for fulcruming and centering the tool in opening tin cans, is formed upon the outer end of the screw-threaded shank c, which passes through the screw-tap c in the center of the outer end of the ferrule or cap B, and back into the wooden handle, so that the point may be adjusted to and from the blades a to suit cans of different sizes.
To the rear end of the wooden handle A is secured the metal plate D, in which is pivoted the spoon d, wirecutter e, forkf, and knifeblade 9, all of which are provided with suitable back-springs placed in the wooden handle i is a tooth-pick, and k is a pair of tweezers that are adapted to be shoved into suitable holes made in the plate D and outer end of the handle A, where they may be conveniently carried with the tool, so that they will always be at hand when needed for use.
When all of the parts attached to the handle are folded down against it and shoved down into it, their outer surfaces stand about flush with the main body of the handle, so that they in no way interfere with the use of the tool in opening cans, and any one of them may be turned ordrawn out for use as occasion may require.
Constructed in this manner, the device is very complete and compact, and is very convenient for travelers, excursionists, surveying,
prospecting, and hunting parties, to whom economy in space and weight is an object.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The handle A, having the ferrule B, provided with the blades a, in combination with the adjustable fulcrum and centering-point, as and for the purposes set forth.
2. The handle A, blades a, and centeringpoint C, in combinationwith the spoon d, wire- 'cutter e, forkf, and blade g, hinged in the handle, substantially as and for the purposes set forth. V
The handle A, blade (I, and centeringpoint C, in combination with the corkscrew j spoon d, fork f, blade wire-cutter e, toothpick 17, andtweezers 7:, as and for the purposes set forth.
HENRY HARTMAN.
W'itnesses:
O. H. BLANCHARD, Jr., W. M. J OHNSQN.
